DarkMark
Hi, Seems those In-The-Know types have taken to using oil washes of late. However, they never say what the oil paints have been thinned with. So, if you're one of the ITKs please share the secret. Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/276075-oil-wash-thinner/ Share on other sites
Tellos05
Any oil based paints can be thinned with white spirits. There are a few companies that sell low odour white spirit because it stinks to high heven. Hope it helped you out mate Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/276075-oil-wash-thinner/#findComment-3381322 Share on other sites
DarkMark
That's lucky, I've got a bottle of odourless turps. Will I need to put a coat of varnish on before I apply the wash to protect the acrylic paint underneath? Tellos05
Yeah gloss varnish it first. The properties of the gloss should make it easier to use the oil wash by that I mean just dab it on the areas you want to shade (recesses, shoulder pads ect) instead of washing the whole mini. It should flow by itself provided you thinned it enough. If you go overboard with the oil wash you can always go over the area with neat white spirit to clean it up. S.k.i.t.t.l.e
You can do the gloss varnish then wash trick with regular acrylic washes too. And white spirit will clean off any smudges of that as well. It doesn't run off the brush as well as th oil washes seem to, but it works well enough. Just my $0.02 (in case anyone was wondering if they needed to put up with the stench/have to buy yet more paints... :D) Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/276075-oil-wash-thinner/#findComment-3381807 Share on other sites
