Tau giving me a hard time, any suggestions?

Thanks....correct being a wolves player does increase their fear. Guess I suppose to play battle sisters or eldar..smile.png

And wood elves of course. No self-respecting girl gamer should be without her trusty Elven Dryads painted with glitter (anja wetterjen im looking at you)

2500 is almost apocalypse level, so its not probably worth bothering making even remotely competetive there... and 1750 is fairly unusual, so I would go 1500 (standard uk value) or 2000 (standard US value).

Ill let grey mage do the serious tactical thinking, but just looking at what you got a footslogging list is probably your best bet, since rhinos are pretty sukkish this edition and you dont have a lot of drop pods.

So to start:

HQ: Rune priest (this guy can cast stormcaller, to give your units a cover save which is very handy crossing the board).

From here you can go GH-heavy list (look at mine, its on page 1 of SW army lists).

Or you can go for a loganwing list:

HQ:rune priest

       logan grimmar

and then just a lot of squads of-8 wolf guard, 2 wolf guard in terminator armour with cyclones (plus any other equipment you want. I would leave it as it is and just add a chainfist to every second unit).

..........................................

The irony of this situation? Tau are probably both list's worst matchup. Still though they dont care about your rhinos, so unless you get a lot of drop pods not much you can do there.

Rhinos are not suckish in this edition, they just need to be used differently then rolling bunkers for delivering the assault.  It has been discussed before that due to the changes that they just need to be used exactly what a light infantry transport should be used for, rapid delivery.  Rhinos moving forward as quickly as possible are great close support for dreadnoughts drop podding in, GH drop podding in, or outflanking/infiltrating units.

The ideal goal in setting up your army so that it is target rich for an opponent to the point that the pressure is on them to not only choose the right units to fire upon, but also leave him questioning his choice to do so.  In the above instance, what does your opponent have to worry about?  Drop podding units, outflanking units, AND Rhino rushing units.  Where does his priority lie in choosing which target is the higher threat?  Do they splitfire among threats and thus be less effective in firing or focus fire on one unit while leaving others unscathed?  This method dictates a BALANCED approach to army construction to include drop pods, special movement (scouting/infiltrating/outflanking), and yes, mech.

Despite the initial outcry that mech was killed in 6th edition, that is hardly the case if you change your idea of what mech is supposed to accomplish in their role and not rely on trying to use old mech tactics with new mech rules.

You make it sound so difficult. He spends a small amount of firepower destroying your rhinos, then shoots your isolated podded units while your de-meched GH try to catch up. If he has turn 1 then he can grab first blood while he is at it.

I disagree that rhinos are good. Rhinos got nerfed significantly, pods got buffed. I am of the opinion that it is ideal to go maximum drop pods, maximum rhinos, or footslogging.

EDIT: i must admit i am new to 6th edition, and to be honest i didn't believe in rhinos even during 5th edition, and the above is just my opinion. What im basically saying though is that there isn't any need to make rhino/hybrid armies sound a lot better than proven (and imo simpler to play) drop pod and footslogging playstyles.

@friz

gw don't sell bitz anymore as far as i know. Use ebay.

Otherwise the cyclone comes in the space marine terminator box. Land speeder typhoon launchers are also good, just leave 1 one the speeder (unless you aren't arming it with typhoon launchers), and put 1 on the terminator's back.

A method i use is putting an assault marine jump pack upside down on the back of a terminator, and putting greenstuff missiles in the vents.

Yes, tau markerlights will get rid of your cover saves. However as has been pointed out earlier, them negation your cover means they don't get other bonuses instead, like +1 ballistic skill.

Drop pod, Saga of the Hunter, Wolf Scouts. Anything to get you into charge range or to get a tempting distraction as close as possible.

A MotW Lone Wolf will mince Fire Warriors if it's aloud to get there.

Don't bother trying to find air support as they have lots of counters for it.

Lastly, welcome to the Fang and I know Ramses said you'll get tossed around a bit but I doubt you'll need to worry. MavGirl (or Skadi as she's often called) did a fair bit of head smashing so we know to respect those who can't grow beards. Doesn't mean some won't try though

So you are new to 6th and carrying over bias from 5th edition regarding mech?  Gotcha.

I'm going to try my bike pack out I have 9 regular and one mounted wolf priest . Just cause smile.png

Sounds solid, specifically with the wolf priest there to make up for lower BS/WS. That is a hard hitting unit with decent survivability due to Toughness 5 and turbo boosting. When facing Tau, this unit with a flamer equipped Swift Claw, would be a serious threat in getting close to Pathfinders for some toasting and assaulting.

At 90 pounds sterling, the Storm Eagle is just too much. I'd like my wife to not murder me in my sleep.

And with TL Laz and multi-Melta its a whopping 300 points! ...but it does hold 10 wolfy termies that can assault out of it! (after being on the board for a turn)...but not worth dismemberment, death, nor divorce...well divorce if she is crazy as my ex-wife.
