New Eldar and us?

So a change to Runes of Warding (or whatever the item was that made you roll 3D6 for psyker tests)?

Yup.  New rule for "Runes of Protection/Warding" (depending on what translation you have) is a once off ability to deny the witch on a 2+.

Thats it.

A friend of mine got all the new Eldar stuff from a local retailer notorious for placing it's preview boxes on the shelf. Nothing in the book seems too surprising, scary or over powered from the reports I've gotten. I wouldn't panic!

Eldrad is Mastery Level 4, and can restore Warp Charges after he rolls a 5+ on a d6 after the use of a power.

However, he generates random powers now. Which smells. For the Eldar. While he's still somewhat like his old self, I doubt people will be using him as much as they did. He can still shift units after deployment, but he's no longer capable of reliably casting the same power twice per turn, which made people take him in the first place.

Got the book today. Expect lots of sneaky tricks, but they Eldar pay the points cost for it. Psychic powers will either ruin your day if everything goes according to plan, or not much at all, which is more likely.

Big point breaks in the troops section will see more of them about, Fire prisms can no longer link, but the basic shot is S5AP3 large blast. Watch for that one.

As Xenith says I'm sure we will see some nasty tricks and lists in time... That being said I think the Eldar have lost their greatest strength (Psychic shenanigans)... They could ruin your day with the right rolls... But you can't count on those. Some units have become cheaper, which was needed, but others have become more expensive... So we need to see how it works out.

I don't think the books overall power level, if there is such a thing, is up there with Tau.

Unless they redo imperial guard soon, Im pretty sure Tau is this editions grey knights/imperial guard. A codex with no playtesting amid a bunch of balanced codex. Its a shame really.

On the topic of blood angels, i also do not see much to change tactics against eldar. Psykers are something that work now instead of being near useless before the game starts. If anything, you have to have some gnarly assault and/or movement. The ability to run AND shoot is psudo tau crisis suit shenanigens. Thankfully for opponents (not good for eldar) it appears that any of the obvious hard kitting stuff is crammed into one slot. so until actual games commence and lists come out, i declare Eldar to have Nid syndrome.

I disagree with all of the hard hitting stuff being in one slot. Fire Dragons will still make a mess (although they have been made more expensive, which they needed. A number of fast attack units have improved. Heavy support might be a bit more dynamic now. I'm not sure how the Eldar will play, but on the whole I don't think people should be worry anymore than they did before the new codex.

The thing with the Eldar is they do not have enough powerful combinations that cannot be realistically stopped from working.

Tau have some incredible alpha strike possibilities, some amazing ways of dealing with flyers and deep striking units, ways to kill units that are hidden behind cover camped on home objectives and ways to completely stop you getting in to assault with them. They also have very good troops that are appropriately pointed and can perform exceptionally in their roles.

Eldar don't really have anything that leaps out at me as exceptional in it's role apart from the Crimson Hunter and Jetbikes as scoring units. Couple gimmicks like horrify+mind war but nothing that's really nasty.

They are a good book, but they don't look as functionally powerful as Tau. They probably sit somewhere above Dark Angels and below Chaos Heldrake Marines.
