Trying to make banner for Chaplain, need some direction idea

Recommended Posts

Trying to come up with a freehand sketch / paint for my chaplain.

From googling and looking around I know its 'usual' for chaplain to have a banner.. its not that common.

Then again you got some old school friends like Asmodai back then who rocked one.

Trying to come up with ideas for the art asset.  Would also look to make one for Chaplain dreads.

All I know - definitely going to have to have lots of skulls.  Any ideas or suggestions?

Maybe grim reaper of sorts.

I have been grappling with this same situation. It would help to know what chapter you are going to do. they all have a different kinda feel.

I am thinking a large sull with the chapter badge on the forehead. maybe a border of little skulls and scroll on the bottom.

let me know what chapter and I'll see if I can knock a few up for your!

In 2nd edition all studio miniatures with the exception of those wearing a jumppack had banners. Mostly just simple black banners with skulls or the odd skeleton and colored rim in company color. Could have a look at those for some inspiration.

This page has some older miniatures on it. The termie chaplain sports a little more elaborate banner.

Though the Chapter is definitely important for the Iconography. BA might have a goblet somewhere in there or a winged figure in reference to their primarch for example.

Maybe instead of a proper cloth banner you could mount a banner pole on his back that is adorned with skulls from various enemies. Most of the races in 40k have skull models. I have also made banner poles just to mess with certain foes. My friend plays BAs so I have some models with all kinds of BA trophies just to get in his head a little. Every distraction helps.

There are really 2 ways that you can approach this: tie the banner in with the chapter's heraldry (example: raven guard chaplain may have a bird skull on his banner), or to go with a personal banner.

I recommend finding artistic references for whatever path you choose, and come up with a design based on your references.
