DA black ops/shadow ops..?

Hi all,

I was thinking of building a kind of 'black ops' squad for the DAs.

I have 5 spare vets and I have this picture of black-grey armour in my mind, with dark/brown robes.

Specifically outfitted to hunt down fallen.

I know that spacemarines are already very 'elite', but I think it would be fun to build some übersquad. Loads of points in a small squad. Maybe backed up by some PDF troopers, perhaps usefull to use as 'allies' for the DAs.

Sort of a 'deathwatch' kind of squad, but only for the DA. Powerweapons? A meltagun or 2? Stuff like that, a squad that can dish it out and (hopefully) soak it up, even if they are small in numbers.

If any of you have build something like that I'd be really interested in reading about them. It would be something to either ally with some guard elements on the tabletop, or, if that is possible, use as fallen themselves (perhaps using the chaosdex?) and use traitorguard or something.

Using the Grey Knights dex opens more options, but I could use some steering about this small project.

Hope to hear fromm you! I could do with some advise..! :)

Cheers,

Jan

We have warriors specifically outfitted to hunt the Fallen; they're called the Deathwing.

On another note, the Dark Angels have already been stated to be as interested (if not more so) in tradition as they are in functionality so it's unlikely that a squad would ever disguise it's heraldry in order to chase down a Fallen. If anything, we want the filthy traitors to know exactly who's coming for them.

As for PDF (or any non-Unforgiven) backup, I can't see that occurring with any unit specifically tasked with capturing Fallen. They're our greatest secret and biggest shame and although we could purge any allies after the mission, even the smallest risk that we might miss one and our secret be revealed is too great. We are one of the most insular Chapters in existence; we don't use outside help, especially with The Hunt.

So I'm not being a complete party pooper however, how about fluffing them up as a guerrilla type squad? As much as we are traditional, we're also pragmatic; say a squad of Ravenwing were trapped when their extraction was compromised behind enemy lines. One by one, their bikes/squadmates have been lost but with information concerning a Fallen, it became imperative that they survive until contact could be established with the Chapter so they 'went native' in order to ensure survival. That way you could keep your desired colour scheme and give the squad a real sense of character.

Hi,

Yes, I know that 'we' wouldnt want to ever use allies to hunt Fallen. Actually, I despise most of the 'ally matrix', I cant imagine killer robots who hate all living things above all else Ever, EVER ally with anyone.

BTT; Deathwing isnt an option, I want non-termies for this. 'Grounded' ravenwingers is a good idea though, I like that.

Actually, it's more a 'fluff-type' of veterans. I mean, I want veterans who really are VETERANS. More options, better weapons, higher WS/BS,...

I dont really mind from what codex they come, really. Like the CSM dex a few versions ago, you could really build something BAD out of it (bad meaning 'some kind of awesome' here), and then balance that with (for instance) guard. You can balance this nowadays with an ally, but back then you could use the LatD rules for them.

Maybe I am overlooking some units in some codex, I am not sure. I dont have them all. But if someone could point me in the right direction that would be appreciated.

Shortysl; how would you make that RW squad more... veteran? Even more Elite? I'd really like to know :)!

A Black Ops squad with robes sounds a bit funny to me. It'd be like scouts with camo-cloaks and back-banners...

I'd go with Ravenwing on foot. I was also thinking about doing something like that, really. To me, it sounds pretty cool.

Also, I'd like to have Ravenwing on my army but I'm not too fond of painting bikes :P

Blood Angel Honour Guard? Shooty or power-weapony, Access to a WS5 Champion, plasmaguns, meltaguns, power weapons/etc though you also have to account for the squad apothecary who cant be upgraded at all...

Making a unit more elite in terms of how they play on the tabletop is going to be hard, if not impossible; most of the really powerful units from the good old days are no longer available.

Making them elite in terms of fluff is just a matter of a good backstory.

If you want to know how I'd approach it personally, it'd be something like the following:

1) Do I have a particular opponent that I regularly play against/ is there a particular army that is popular amongst my opponent base? This may influence how their backstory and weapon choices develop.

2) Think outside the box. As with the Ravenwing example above, think of a backstory; why should this particular unit be any different from any other in the army? You might use a Company Veteran entry for legality, but that doesn't mean they have to be Company Veterans in terms of their background. In your backstory, lay the groundwork for why they're armed as they are. If their backstory involves Orks for example, you'd expect a lot of Flamers, Mauls etc.

3) Go to town on the modelling. As long as your unit is codex legal, you can do anything you want with them.

Just remember, specialists are exactly that; excellent against a specific type of foe, but unsuitable for others. Creating a specialist unit is a labour of love, not a game winner. Hope I've helped, all of this is just my opinion of course but if you want help brainstorming, give me a shout.

Allright, thanks all.

I've got some stuff to think about. Meanwhile I'll start and collect some more stuff, maybe mold some marine in the role of apo, get myself a champion... That way I can model loads of things on them and still use them as a command squad...

Other option is a unit of 'sternguard'. Special ammo, nifty bolters,...

Thanks!
