The Horus Heresy: Thoughts and Hopes for the future.

Recommended Posts

The Horus Heresy has always been, without a doubt, my favourite part of the 40k background. So to see it finally being explored in book and miniature form is something of a dream come true for me. So I decided to start a thread to muse on the Black Library series so far and to explore what I, and others, would like to see from the Heresy.

Firstly, I want BL to keep throwing new twists and turns at us, the reader. The "Imperium Secundus" arc is fantastic purely for the fact is borders on outright heresy. It adds a depth of character to the Ultramarines they were severely lacking, and best of all it made the HH series less black and white. It shouldn't just be a story about how the loyalists were perfect and the traitors were the worst thing since the Fall of the Eldar, it should be a time of uncertinity, we know the story but the oppurtunity to generate huge amounts of new fluff is one that shouldn't be missed. Which leads into my next point.

One thing, I'd really like to see is Legions swapping sides. If done correctly it could greatly enhance the character of some of the Primarchs like "Imperium Secundus" will for Guilliman. Why not have the Khan initially side with Horus, only for him to switch back when he realises the devestation the war will cause to the Imperium. Maybe a group of Iron Hands could turn because they felt the Imperium had failed their primarch. Or perhaps a group of night lords, disgusted at the taint of chaos showing through in some legions, decide to fight for the Emperor. The possibilities are endless, and I love to see this potential avenue explored in future books.

And, finally keep the anthology books coming. I personally feel that that while the novels do a great job of telling the story, its is the little short stories that really hammer home the feel of the Heresy era. They also allow the Heresy to seem much broader and not just a small scale conflict where the primarchs took they're legions and fought in a few places before going to Terra.

Thanks for reading, what are your thoughts and hopes for the Heresy series?

I really, really prefer the hard back. I read the books over and over, and my original paper backs are looking very tatty. Plus, as ADB pointed out, we get them 6 months early.

I'd personally like to see new characters kept to a minimum, and only introduced when they serve a real purpose. We have a rich cast as it stands, some of whom could really be developed a lot more (such as the Raven Guard and Iron Hands form Angel Exterminatus) but in KNF for example (which was a great read) it was sometimes difficult to know which greco roman named marine was doing and whether he had been mentioned before.

Oh also, did anyone else notice they addressed the whole "magnus contacted the emperor at the wrong part of the time line" in "Wolf Hunt" ?

It originally started in The Outcast Dead. Unless it's changed again. And since Graham McNeill is the author who wrote A Thousand Sons, The Outcast Dead and Wolf Hunt, I am perplexed as to what the explanation is or even how it happened.

Although I know it is a futile hope (and that there has been topics on this matter) but i would love it if Sevatar ended up as a knight errant.

But that topic was... polarizing to say the least.

As for the larger series... I am happier that the Ultramarines no longer just sat out the heresy, but are actively a part of it...  I just wish the rest of the Word Bearers legion and their primarch suffer and die.

Apparently in Wolf Hunt it's explained:

I admit I stay away from spoiler threads until I see the material but I might do it this one time. Thanks for pointing that out.

EDIT: Hmm, doesn't exactly explain alot though. Might have to get it myself.

There's literally one line addressing it. Just one. Not much of an explanation, but offers some insight.

i don't see it as 6 months early, more like 6 months late.  with all due respect to ADB the early thing smacks of the company line (in my opinion)

i'll stop now, i don't want to derail this thread

That's a gross distortion of the word "early". You get them the same time you would have gotten the paperback.

The lion and the wolf. There flight to reach terra in time I really want to see that as a book.

More Mortarion giving the fall of his legion and the fact that the IA have him as a bit of a hard headed person I would like to see more before the death guard are becalmed and set upon by papa nurgle. So far he's been depicted as little more then a lickspittle to horus.

The white scars need more and they better play a hughe part in the siege book/books.

The custodes and the sister's of silence would be nice to learn more about them.

The scouring I really don't want the seris to end after the siege.

Couldn't agree more.....the hardbacks don't come early, as it takes the same time to publish a hardback book as it does a paperback. What annoys me more though is this "Enhanced ebook" nonsense. I read all my books on the Kindle now, and having to wait an arbitrary time for the 'normal' ebook to come out is frustrating! Also, limited edition books within the series are annoying too!

With regard to the series itself though, I'd quite like to see the Lion take his rightful place as the only truly loyal Primarch! :D

Obviously with 18 Legions to portray, there are always going to be some people disappointed that their favourites are not being given the space they feel they deserve, but yes, its time for the Scars to get some proper air time.
