That really depends on the layout of the table, and the units you have available. In my experience: - many people want to create a complete enclosure. This gives the unit using it a Cover save and a Difficult terrain boost to CC from all directions. This is less relevant to Wolves if you have a Chooser of the Slain to prevent Outflanking forces from bypassing an ADL set up as a line across a corner. - others tend to make a 'C'-shape enclosure. This offers more footprint than the full enclosure above, while still giving a good amount of Cover and Difficult terrain against charges, at the expense of an opening in the barracades. - some use some variation of a straight or staggered line. This is good for large, gun-line forces (ie Guard) when they don't anticipate getting Outflanked or flanked. - I have, on occasion, seen some people make an 'H'-shape, to provide a line defense in depth to help mitigate Barrage damage. I'm not very impressed with this formation. Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/276258-defense-line-formation/#findComment-3384175 Share on other sites
Friz 80
Thanks. I will try different variations to see what works best for me and my play style I just wanted a general idea thanks so much. The H formation seems strange Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/276258-defense-line-formation/#findComment-3384179 Share on other sites
legalsars
Cover is for the weak!!! Seriously though, I've seen them most effective in enclosure when dealing with infantry armies... if there are units that can negate cover saves (heldrakes, flamernaughts, etc.) the whole thing is basically a bonus and fee to the quad gun.
