Legion of the Damned themed Scouts...how to represent them?

Recommended Posts

I'm looking to add some scout snipers to my Legion of the Damned themed army...and I have no idea how to represent them.  The theme is obviously full of skulls and fire, death, skeletons, etc.  The full line of Legion of the Damned models are used, as well as converted tactical squads and chaplains as characters, because of the skull helmets.  Vehicles have been covered in skulls and painted with a flame theme.  So now that I want to add scouts...I have no idea how to do it.  Regular scouts don't look "Damned" enough, and the camo cloaks don't really fit into the theme.  Sniper rifles are fine, but I'm not sure how to represent the scouts in a way that fits the theme.

To get an idea of the vehicles, here's a link to my blog:

Any ideas, comments, or suggestions?

Take normal marines and turn them into snipers? If the scout model is fouling you up try something diffrent. If your looking for ideas on how it could look forge world I think just launched a kit. I looked into doing that for my deathwatch army. Hope this helps!

I think helmets or hoods would be a must, preferably helmets I guess. Cadian helms with the respirator masks could look ok, Pig Iron have some suitable scout helms too.

An alternative perhaps could be FW Recon squad as counts-as scouts?  Fluffwise at least I really don't see the LotD having scouts, due to their 'condition'.

You could heavily modify the bolters on regular scouts to represent sniper rifles.  For heads, hooded skulls with a touch of cabling to make it clear they are masks/helmets.  Or you could just go Ghost Rider and give them all flaming skull heads.  Or you could just make them eerily pale.  Or you could mix and match all of that.

There's one conversion I've seen used for ghosts and Word Bearers, where you take the hood and drill out the face, then paint the interior black.  Very creepy looking.  Ragged cloth would look cool (especially with the hollow hoods), either simple GS or perhaps looking at the camo cloaks and seeing which you can hack up and damage.

Ooh, I like the idea of the recon squad as counts-as scouts...I think my problem was trying to use the actual scout models, which really didn't inspire me at all.  I know fluff-wise might not be fitting, but the theme as far as the painting and modelling of the scouts needs to comply.

The hollow hoods is a very interesting concept...as well as the ragged cloaks.  Might have to give that a try.

Anvil Industries has a set of 28mm skull helmets that have cloaked hoods.  I realize you said you dont like the camo cloak "look" but hooded skulls with flowing cloaks would make scouts/sniper scouts look like reminiscent of the classic robed death motif.  As for shoulder pads, maybe you could add some bones on rope? various hunter charms if you will.  You might also think of getting your hands on some of the out of production legion of the damned metal models with the skulls mounted above the barrel for use on scouts-

come to think of it, if you arent afraid to cast, the bolters are roughly the size of hurricane bolters, and would also look killer on a LotD land raider crusader; something to think about.

A proof of concept for the hollow hood, also an interesting way to make things look ghostly by removing segments and leaving bits of armor/limbs 'floating.'

That floating limb idea is awesome! Great example man.
