CosmicCreations
A while ago I was asked to undertake a rather large commission from a previous customer of mine. Using just FW models, I was to build a large Salamander army. After much discussion and many changes made, the final colours and plan was laid down and I got to work. Neither of us are fans of the usual bright green, covered in yellow and red flames style of Sallies, so I went for a darker, more Olive Green, and Bright Brass trim for flames and other details. The first batch of this army was.. Vulkan He'stan Commander 3x Contemptors 2x Predators 1x Vindicator Command Squad 4x Tactical Squads 1x Veteran Squad 1x Heavy Bolter Squad After a few weeks of painting, my customer asked if he could have them back over the summer to play some games with, he would then return them to me in September, with a currently unknown 2nd batch of a few more tanks and bits and bobs to completely finish. So, I very quickly had to get them done to a good quality just for the table for some games, and they will be finished properly later in the year. But that's enough typing for the moment, you can all look at the shiny interesting photos ;) http://i.imgur.com/8iNTuKZ.jpg http://i.imgur.com/e3AFdxs.jpg http://i.imgur.com/ed8tJAy.jpg http://i.imgur.com/7vDxiOA.jpg http://i.imgur.com/79ZN2ck.jpg http://i.imgur.com/gl0ySAo.jpg http://i.imgur.com/J612i9L.jpg http://i.imgur.com/giO58mx.jpg http://i.imgur.com/w1PWVJF.jpg http://i.imgur.com/hdoNm82.jpg http://i.imgur.com/3TqZmaR.jpg http://i.imgur.com/gd7ZTgO.jpg http://i.imgur.com/FOXU6Fu.jpg There will be some changes and improvements made to them come September, mainly the shoulder pad inserts will be changed to Black and the bases will be redone, as well as small details such as pouches and eyes. I also believe that I will be redoing Vulkan He'stan, to make him more in-keeping with the Heresy Style. But for now this is the first lot done to a basic standard. One more thing, this army is being used with the 40k rules. And since I don't play the game at all, I cannot answer any questions about legality or why Vulkan He'stan is in a Heresy Era army....that's not down to me, I just paint ;) Hope you enjoy, Cosmic
KaiserTJ1860
I have to say, I'm a fan of the more muted greens and the muddied golden helms for the HQ's and more important personel. My only grip would be the skin tone of the unhelmeted marines. With Sally's being so distinctly "onyx skinned with red eyes" im wondering if this was a request by the client or not? going to the pains of getting a 30k army - the fluffiest type you could collect in my mind - I would go all out to make it as true to the fluff as poss. But then again I am a fluff-aholic. In any case, if this is a quick job, I cant wait to see what they look like when they're finished! My client feels that's most of the veterans are from Terra and still retain their usual pale skin tone, so each to their own :) Thank you for the kind words, I'm excited to get these back so I can finish these properly! Best, TJ Until a few years they were just dark skinned, not dark elves. Could be the customer is just going with what he knew to the skin coloration for years, and was the fluff until someone decided it would be cooler to have them turned in Drow Space Marines. Captain Semper
Hey Cosmic, this is really high quality stuff... Is the tone of the green also a request by the client? Personally (although technically top notch) I could have mistaken them for Raptors Chapter... In my mind Salamanders are associated with a more vibrant green. But as you correctly pointed out, each to their own! :D
Freakiq
Incredible looking army. Was also confused by the pale skin, but the veterans being from Terran stock was a good explanation. Until a few years they were just dark skinned, not dark elves. Could be the customer is just going with what he knew to the skin coloration for years, and was the fluff until someone decided it would be cooler to have them turned in Drow Space Marines. They were actually described as coal black even back in Rogue Trader. When Armagedon rolled around the 'Eavy Metal painters misinterpreted that as African rather than (as you said) Drow. Didn't the Index Astartes article as well as the Salamander novel describe pre-heresy Salamanders as having darker green armour? I seem to recall them finding a stash of dark green MKIII armour with Salamanders icons.

We agreed on the final scheme o be a darker and dirty, battle ready style As such, I painted up a quick tester in this scheme and he loved it, so it stuck :) Thank you everyone, next time you see this army, they should be complete and slightly different! So keep your eyes peeled :) Cosmic

Hi, Robert I get my brushes from Creative Models Ltd, their own brand Kolinsky Sable brushes are really good. I mainly use an Airbrush now though. Thank you for the kind words, I'm still improving myself and I'm regularly in awe at some of the work on here and everywhere else! Just keep practicing and use the countless tutorials found all over the web, they really help :) Cosmic
KJB
Man these are beautiful... The mixture of armour marks, the use of different kits and not forgetting the paint scheme itself I'm building a pre heresy Blood Angels force at the moment and I'll be taking a lot of inspiration from these guys Again, very nicely done

There will be some slight changes come September but I'm sure there will be some great extras added to it, I'm not too sure what else my customer has planned yet! The DAs having black armour at that time. And I also believe that they had no visible insignia. All the sallies could see in Infra Red so the insignia was only visible to those who could see IR.
