Bare-bones lone wolf=autoinclude

Considering for 5 points more than a GH, you get a model with twice the wounds, fnp, an extra attack, and beastslayer, i think as many uneqquiped lone wolves as you can fit into the elites should be in every list.

Just run him down the board, and he will make more than his points back simply by being shot. And you don't one a vp! Any reason I don't see these guys?

I agree they take up an elite slot and you still have the issue of how to get them into battle. You want them to die but you don't wan tit to be too easy. You also want them to compliment your army and create a distraction. This for example is not easily done in a primarily drop pod force as you need speed and or ranged firepower to help the podding packs. Therefore, in that example, not really an "auto include".

Didn't consider that. Then again:

-its only 1 point

-if you go first, you'll probably get FB

-you can hide him for 1 turn if you want, you'll have time

-if you have rhinos/drop pods, they are an easy FB too, so a LW isn't much of a diffirence then

-they are shooting a low-threat survivable unit=profit

If you are hiding him a turn, that is a turn that he isn't absorbing fire like you said he would be used for. If you are podding in, the lone wolf starting at your deployment line is hardly a threat compared to everything right in your face so will not be targeted for at least a turn.

He is not an autoinclude.

Its not about his cost or comparison to GH. Its all about the elite slot; by far the most precious slot for our army compared to others.

WGPLs have become all but mandatory, so we general only have 2 slots to play with. Scouts, despite the role reversal in 6e, are still popular, and depending on your army theme, dreadnoughts as well. Assuming you haven't soaked up your elite slots with either of those (or 2 units of either) you still have an Iron Priest (sadly weak) and Lone Wolf to choose from.

Ultimately, given the option between a barebones LW and a fully kitted engine of death LW, the barebones falls short. The bonus rules are nice, but again, its all about elite slot space, so when it comes time to choose where to spend 20 pts, a barebones LW usually isn't a valid option.

Apart from 1 wg, i don't see anything better than a LW.

Dreadnaughts for fire support and absorbing hits that would just obliterate a GH. If his tactical squads have to choose between your dread and your GHs, you hope he goes for the dread and saves you lives.

They also are cheap for an extra pod and firing on the move. Best taken in pairs- so theres two slots.

Anyone who likes WG will want a pack for their leaders.... so theres that. For some thats all of the elites right there.

And while assaulting Wolf Scouts might be a thing of the past, Wolf Scouts are still very strong backfield menaces.... and I always take a pack.

Why would I want a Lone Wolf? Monsterhunter... though thats harder, now that the monsters are often flying... and maning an aegis gun.

Can a Lone Wolf drop in  pod?

No, they cannot.

Assuming you don't have any (brilliant im sure) plans for your elites, he is certainly worth putting in to every list (as many as you can fit, 0-3).

@ramses if he doesn't get shot now he will get shot later, or he will get into cc and tarpit/eat overwatch. That argument is only valid assuming you have nothing else left for your opponent to kill apart from the LW. He is only 20 points, its not like you are detracting from the general list for what you are getting.

For what he is, for 20p, assuming you don't have plans for your elites (despite the dread love i rarely see more than 1 elite per army), you should just stick him in imo (by him i mean as many as you can cram).

He's great camping out on an Icarus behind an ADL, and if the Long Fangs back there with him get in trouble in CC somehow, he can scurry on over to resolve it, lol. That's how I use a cheap Lone Wolf. I have never had an issue fitting one in, as the only other Elite choices I would use in standard point games are a single Wolf Guard pack and my Contemptor.

I've been running one just like Sturm suggested. Gives you a 2 wound model to shoot things with that can also back up and baby sit.

And for 20 points, it makes the ADL 120 instead and that's still a decent cost for the best anti air potion we've got.
