Brothers my time has come to start building my rosters. My army has arrived today in the post and the building has commenced. After taking a break of putting things together i thought id type out some army lists only to realise HOW LONG IT TAKES FML.

Soo i came across this software army builder. However the demo isnt really good. Would like some advise. Is this worth buying? From what i read it is a big time saver and is up to date with all rules ect..ect..

So big question is it worth the investment.

Thanks

Wasn't there a rumor about GW working on software/app that would compete with the likes of Army Builder and Battlescribe?!

they've done it before, it was much much crapier than can believed...

for one thing, they never updated it. for another, it was something like (trying to remember here) armies of the imperium, and then everybody else. so if you had multiple armies you needed to buy the other.

as AB can do every army, plus multiple game systems, it was the clear winner here.

I used AB for many, many years, but changed up a few years ago and just started using excel; I can now produce much more user-friendly lists, and they still tabulate the points. The hard part is building the template and "master list" (a roster of all of my units), but once that is done creating a specific army list is a simple matter of cutting and pasting units into a new tab, and tweaking for options. I much prefer it to AB.

I use Battlescribe simply to give mobile access to my lists. I prefer to do my theorycrafting/army building with pen, paper, and calculator. Then, when I get some free time at work, I put it all into an excell spreadsheet I created that lists an incredible amount of information about each unit that I print out for games.

Army builder rocks! Completely saves time and is great format for tournaments. When ever I see a hand written list these days the first thing I think is "not another points cheat!"

Funny, I think the same of the AB user lists, because everything is in a terrible format and hard to read, there are always inconsistencies and errors, and then they usually flout the AB version of certain rules over the BRB/codex, at which point I clearly point out they're wrong and they get all huffy about it. It inspires laziness and a point-and-click mentality in nearly everyone that uses it, and that's just not good. <_<

This is just my own experience. I will never use AB or another program. I prefer to keep my mind sharp and knowledgeable. ;)

I can see your point, being familiar with AB I am comfortable with it enough to know its flaws. AB also flags any wrong choices within the list. For me it is in wargear that I find people cheating for points. With AB majority of the time I can catch that. Just the other day had a CSM player "forget" to pay for the black mace, caught in his AB list right away. In another game against GK and obviously quick chicken scratch list, after the first turn asked him what unit his razorback was dedicated to. His answer was in the squad that he combat squaded and gave each of them one! I guess that one should of been caught by the judges but it seems the judges seldom really look at the lists. Love your enthusiasm Seahawk wish the players around here that wrote their list by hand had your perspective.

Yes, you have to double check. But for me it has been pretty accurate. Makes less mistakes than I do and saves me time. Time is gold for me. with a very busy RL.
