spacewolves true scale blog

Recommended Posts

hello there internet.

i have recently made my first foray into the world of space marines, and thought I would share the results of this project with you.

its not finished yet and iv hit a wall so need help but I wanted to see what you thought anyway.

until recently I played orks and so when it came to taking a marine list I had no choice but to go for the drinking fighting Vikings in space known as space wolves

however one of the key issues that kept me form marines has always been that they are to small. a marine should stand head and shoulders above any guardsman.

so true scale it is.

helped incredibly by the works of one mr apologist i began work and well i have waffled far too much, let's let the picks do the talking

http://i1284.photobucket.com/albums/a561/MrPrometheus/spacewolves%20blog/DSC_5546_zpsd014663d.jpg

this is the first attempt at true scaling based of an old chaos terminator set of legs and a random body, he will function as njal storm caller in my force. im particularly proud of the beard..

next up is one of the 6 long fangs i plan to make. this guy is still wip as he has only had his chest work done and the legs still need atention but i could not resist giving him a good old pint

his buddy hear is drinking form a drinking horn that he has just filled from the skin at his waist, im thinking of naming him sandor after the hound in game of thrones

now we get onto the first grey hunter squad, these ones are basically my finished product, perhaps in need of a touch up hear or there and some detailing on the shoulder pads , but basically they are done

i apologise as regards the un-needed size of these images, for some reason when i link them from photo bucket the resizing i did there dose not seem to wish to come across.

however i am eager for any and all comments and criticisms you may have of these first attempts and any advice on making the next 3 squads

I love True Scaled stuff, and it's great to see a painted squad rather than a WIP squad, half assembled. Really dig that duel flamer pose too, ye have some bad-ass wolves there.

One issue that pops up now and again, is actually gaming with a TS army, it's unfair/unbalanced. I know it's early days for your force, but has anyone in your group said they won't play you or anything like that?

Cheers,

Jono

Hey man,

I've gotta admit, when I saw the first unpainted picture I was far from convinced but seeing some of these guys painted they look quite cool, I especially like the banner guy, the shading and highlighting seems perfect on him. I think that although your sculpting is a little rough in places what you'll find is like anything, if you get a bit more practice you'll soon start to accelerate your skills. These guys show a very promising start, and given that these are just that - the early beginnings, to me it indicates that you'll produce some superb work further down the line.

Might I also suggest perhaps looking into Forgeworlds Phobos pattern bolters. They are a bit bigger and chunkier than the standard bolters, which can look a little small in truescaled marines' hands. They're also a bit old school and would look good with your older style mk1/thunder armour segmented shoulder pads. Just a thought.

Keep working, keep improving, the sky's the limit.

For Fenris!

thanks guys.

as regards the gaming with local clubs, fortunately i am part of an independent gaming group in Manchester and they have no problem with them because "they look cool"

not to mention, they are all on 25 mm basses (slightly enlarged by scenery) so there is very little for them to complain about really, if anything i'm at a TLOS disadvantage

I gotta say the dual flamer guy is one of my favourite, him and his plasma wielding friend, (pst i may be planning some backstory for them pst)

its interesting that you liked the banner guy the most, considering he was the last one that i worked on, the power armoured Njal was in fact the first one to see any work, which to be fair is probably why he dose not look quite as good as the rest. i may end up re doing him latter, if i can prize the arms off him as I think the pose is fine it just needs a re hash

i am looking into the phobos stuff for the second squad, (there are gonna be 4 squads in the final army plus long fangs lone wolves and wolf guard) and i do agree they would look better with the older armour style i'm attempting. although that said i don't think any of these lads conform to any standard armour mark.

anyway back to the green stuff

so another week and more progress...

i decided to make my first stab at true scale terminator armour, so i made a wolfguard squad leader for these guys

http://i1284.photobucket.com/albums/a561/MrPrometheus/spacewolves%20blog/th_DSC_5553_zpsd80e4098.jpg

he is rather static i will admit, and its not the best work (not to mention i kinda cheated with the shoulder pads) but i think its an ok first foray into the terminator armour.

http://i1284.photobucket.com/albums/a561/MrPrometheus/spacewolves%20blog/th_DSC_5554_zpsb0e15be1.jpg

hear he is from the back, (this shows quite how wip this guy is, i'm just not sure what to do for the back of the suit.

in other news, a friend who knows what im up to made me a gift of some old 2nd edition terminator legs. (i would of prefered the whole terminator to be fair as those were nice clasic models but eh)

so i went through the same process i used for the other terminator legs and the result thius far is this.

i'm not sure i like them, problem is now iv made the work i'm kinda loth to un-make it, ( not to mention this is cheaper than buying 10 more termies)

what do you think guys, can anything be made of them?

Nice progress, I really like the Terminator. If I was to add some constructive criticism I'd say perhaps sculpt somemore of his beard around the whole of his mouth, so that it's not all just coming off the bottom of his chin. I think the back of him could use a little tidying up, around where the vent thing is, above his arse, around his lower back.

It's hard to say about the last squad at this stage, but I'm sure they'll end up looking good. All of the torso's seem to be facing straight forwards, maybe a bit variation would help, having them face left or right.

Keep up the good work.
