Fulgrim a Let Down?

At the end of last week, Fulgrim, Primarch of the Emperor's Children was made available to pre-order on Forgeworld.

Other than this thread getting bumped in the news/rumours/board announcements forum and receiving a whopping three replies, there has been very little discussion about him. It's as if he's a let down, that or Angron got far too much of the hype when he was released.

What do you all think? While he's not on my shopping list I think it's a fabulous model with great movement and it would be a great model to paint.

Even when I don't like the character I love the model, but 55 pounds plus shipping for just one model...It makes me think about it :S I want all the primarchs but if I have to buy them all...50 or 55 pounds per primarch plus the Emperor...around 950 pounds for 19 models, great models but still too much IMO. Just wait until they release Sanguinius or Russ, or Magnus, or the Big E...I will live under a bridge in a box but I would have every Heresy character haha.

I don't think he is a let down I think it is a great mini and it make me excited to see Ferrus and how they both play on one another. I think people are mainly upset with the face(while some don't like the pose also) but if you read the duel between Ferrus and Fulgrim it says he an animal rage and also that he is not pretty but now I am getting in rant mode, in the end I think its an amazing mini, and Simon did it justice!

Come on people, its a good face considering they are supposed to be in the middle of battle. Nobody looks normal or beautiful in battle, not even primarchs. Also if I remember correctly the Slaaneshi demon took control of Fulgrim while fighting Ferrus, right? So that would make him look even more twisted (in my opinion).

I think we're all to picky honestly it looks amazing if you consider that at this point of the duel the good old slanesshi daemon inside his bowels is taking over to strike down his brother ferrus. I just think that everyone expects composure and regal aspects but I like the rage and debased animal aggression that this model displays. I don't think other than the second sculpt fulgrim any of the primarchs will have a noble pose, I want the rage and anger showing even with sanguinus I want to see some rage filled angel.

Anyway I bought it straight away and considering his stats he is worth the price tag.

I feel the face fits the moment. To say Fulgrim was in turmoil, was suffering, and was angry at that moment would be an understatement. There was a lot of rage in that duel.

Actually, arguably, that is the face of a daemon, not of Fulgrim, if we are to interpret the pose as the striking of the death blow on Ferrus.

As for the muted reaction to the release, I would suggest it is because we'd already seen the model several weeks ago so there was no novelty anymore. Angron was a sensation as that was the very first primarch mini so not only were we reacting to the model itself, but also the novelty of the concept of primarch minis.

I picked up on that one when the first pictures were released, hence the reference previously to the pose and face being suitable. But I could be wrong.

It would be amazing though to have duelling primarchs in the future. Maybe the night haunter and the lion ;)

I love the detailing, like the pose, hate the face, am bemused by the hair and am unsure about the sword and the trailing purity seals. Still, very tempted to pick him up for my EC's and take the knife to him. But at £61 with p&p i think i'll wait a bit and see. :)

And whilst i really like Angron, I wasn't terribly sold on Loken and Abaddon actually. Just something in the posing isn't quite right.

Honestly I fail to see how everyone seems to dislike him, from all the fluff and reference pictures it looks good the laer blade is the same as lucius's just as gorechild on angron is kharns. The pose the hair the purity seals are great. I understand everyone has there point of view but he's partly possessed by a greater daemon he's on istvaan v and he has the wrath of a god written into his features.

My opinion is that we're not blown away because for a god seeking perfection we expected more, but in all honesty the imperfections of the model add to it.

He has the wrath of a god that's trying to swallow a softball.

There are two problems with the figure, IMO.

1) He's yelling.  So far there are four HH character figures.  All of them are yelling.  They're nice figures and all, but someone at Forgeworld needs to have a sit down with their sculptors, because right now it seems like the only thing they can do to try and convey intense emotions on their figures is to have them yelling.

2) It's unrealistic yelling.  Angron, Loken, and Abaddon all are yelling, but their mouths are open a reasonable amount.  Fulgrim's mouth looks like he's trying to break the record for the number of pool balls he can stuff in his mouth while standing in a wind tunnel.

Yeah, this recent spate of yelling dudes has to stop! Lets return to the more traditional screaming dudes we're used to tongue.png

Besides, Fulgrim did break the world record for the number of pool balls held in the mouth. It was 17. True fact. Dorn was pissed; he only managed 14. Angron claimed to have done 32, but he just ate them so he was disqualified.

I do like the facial expression. I agree it doesn't fit with how we traditionally imagine Fulgrim to be, but for me it does fit that moment and pose. I'm not sure another expression would work.

I don't feel the FW paint job on Fulgrim, and Loken actually, are flattering to the scuplting of the open mouths. The ones on GW's blog yesterday looked better to me, still on the large side, but better.

The mouths are probably exaggerated anyway due to the scale of the models.

I dunno, I think it's a little worse than that. Look at the Abaddon/Loken pictures. The facial expressions are identical. If one were cynical, you could almost say that the reason they gave Abaddon a topknot was so you could tell them apart.

This is definitely true, Jaspcat. But the Fulgrim model DOES NOT portray that. At all. It portrays a guy getting into a fight in the middle of a giant hotdog eating contest. He doesn't look angry. He doesn't look daemonic or possessed. He doesn't even look like he's yelling/screaming/roaring. He looks like he's got an invisible S&M ball stuck in his mouth.

Angron looked angry. He looked wrathful. My only complaint about him is that it's too much detail in too little a space. I certainly couldn't do it justice and most of what I have seen tells me few others can either. I'd rather give him a helmet than even try. Also because I think good HQ units with helmets on look downright awesome.

Fulgrim is in the same boat, in that I'd rather just put on a helmet instead of paint the face. But not because of the level of detail going on but because he looks absolutely ridiculous. It has nothing to do with whether or not it fits Fulgrim's character, it's just that he does not look like he's in a fight or showing powerful emotions. He looks like he's making faces while pressed up against a piece of glass.

So if you had your brothers completely utterly destroy all bonds of brotherhood and were out for your head you'd be straight faced or have a frown....

No, you would be beyond rage filled and angry as a mother@&$?%r

So, is the only way to convey rage and motherf@$?%ing anger to open your mouth wide to look as though you're trying out for most flexible dental patient, all the while making a frowny face?  Of course not.  Perhaps each one of these minis on their own isn't too bad, but I agree with others that there have been too many of these special characters rendered agape mid-bellow.

It would be nice if they could render some different expressions for variety's sake....even if the sentiment expressed is some belicose rage of universe-stomping proportions.

I don't mind the Loken shouty-face, but Fulgrim is supposed to be a Primarch renowned for his looks and patrician features.  So, I guess I was hoping for something a little errr, prettier.  If any of the Primarch would be concerned with aesthetics mid-battle, it would be Fulgrim.  And on that note, I can't say I like his pose.  It's a bit too awkward and skippy for me.  I can't tell if he's "landing" or awkwardly skipping forward while turning around to show his big mouth.

Just my two cents.  Otherwise it's a beautiful sculpt.
