Dante72
Hi guys. I'm new to painting, but love Ultramarines. I wanted to paint the GW, but I'm a bit confused. Some tutorials use Macragge Blue as a base with their blue wash. After, the armor is cleaned up with Macragge again, followed by a highlight of Altdorf and a fine highlight of Calgar Blue. Other tutorials suggest cleaning the armor with Altdorf and just doing one fine highlight with Calgar. Any suggestions? Febelcrofas
I like the tidy with macragge blue then highlight with the altdorf and calgar. I think Altdorf is too light for the block armour colour just personal taste though. Thats what I've got here and I prefer it. Dante72
That's about the color scheme I'm looking for, too. I think you're right. If I would clean up after the wash with Aldorf, he would be a little too...cartoonish. I was also thinking to wash Aldorf but, that would still be too light as I would have to (or should) clean up after the wash. Thanks for the input :) Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/276945-painting-ultramarines-the-gw-way/#findComment-3395670 Share on other sites
Dante72
For the back of the knees, is that Leadbelcher or one of the greys? Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/276945-painting-ultramarines-the-gw-way/#findComment-3395887 Share on other sites
Febelcrofas
Lead belcher I believe, or possibly boltgun metal. Can't remember if I'd switched yet. It's just the metallic with a black wash and no highlights. Dante72
Thanks. The metallic gives a nice impression of highlights without having to do them. DistroyA
Nice paint job. That's basically what I'm aiming for. Â Oh yeah, fyi, Boltgun Metal and Leadbelcher are the same. Bryan Blaire
They aren't the same. They react to washes differently, namely that you need to use Badab Black on Boltgun and Nuln Oil on Leadbelcher. You will not get the same effect using them in the other combination. Also, Leadbelcher is actually a hair darker than Boltgun Metal, the later having a bit more metallic sheen to it. It's easier to see them side by side, as I did in my DA Paint Comparison: Old vs. New Paints. DistroyA
Oh right. Fair play. To be fair, the old washes and new ones differ in that the new ones have a matte finish instead. Â As for leadbelcher being a tad darker, it's not that much difference. Regardless, the end result is amazing no matter what combination one uses. Dante72
Anyone try Army Painter Warpaints? I'm seriously considering those for my basic colors, silvers and washes. The rest I wanted to supplement with GW cause Citadel paints will cost me an arm and a leg to amass Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/276945-painting-ultramarines-the-gw-way/#findComment-3397390 Share on other sites
S.k.i.t.t.l.e
Anyone try Army Painter Warpaints? I'm seriously considering those for my basic colors, silvers and washes. The rest I wanted to supplement with GW cause Citadel paints will cost me an arm and a leg to amass Vallejo all the way dude. :D (Thats just my opinion though) Game colour for your basic colours and I hear great things about the Model air range metallics. Their Liquid Gold range (a tad bit pricey) is legendary. Dante72
One more quick question, if I may. After doing some research, I picked up a small bottle of Vallejo Glaze Medium. Most people seem to prefer diluting their paints with some sort of medium, thinner etc. than just using plain water. The Vallejo site is rather vague, though. they have almost identical descriptions for most of their technical products. After getting the Medium, I now see that they have a plain paint thinner. Should I have gotten that one? or is the Glaze Medium a good alternative to water as well as?  Thanks for the help :). Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/276945-painting-ultramarines-the-gw-way/#findComment-3401497 Share on other sites
Febelcrofas
I can't comment on the glaze medium but I use the paint thinner and its soooo much better than water. Highly recommended. Dante72
The one from Vallejo? Any suggestions as to ratios? I know that basically it's a look and feel process, but most people seem to go for a 1:1 ration with base paints and a say 2:1 or 3:1 for highlights or even edge highlights... Dante72
Wait? I think I got that backwards... 2:1 or 3:1 paint to thinner ration for base coating and 1:1 for the highlight :) Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/276945-painting-ultramarines-the-gw-way/#findComment-3402119 Share on other sites
Febelcrofas
Personally I like to 1:1 for starters. That's base and highlights and see how it works. It depends how much you want to blend the paint though. If you start at a higher level of dilution you can always thicken but if its too thick you can't really undo it. I do use the Vallejo thinner. Dante72
Thanks. I think I'll do that. And you're right, better to put the paint on too thin and thicken it, than trying to thin it after its on the model. Oh well, I guess it's back to hobby store for me...  I put my models together and I gotta say, the size of these things just scares the &@€? out of me ;) Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/276945-painting-ultramarines-the-gw-way/#findComment-3402127 Share on other sites

Dante72
Yup. These things are freakishly small. I swear they looked bigger in the store :) Â Seriously though, I'm in awe when I see the work you guys put out. Especially edge highlights. Dante72
So, I sat down this afternoon and found the courage to start painting. Though I still need to paint the backpack and the Bolter with the two hands attached, I thought I'd throw some pics in here and you guys could see where I need improvement. I tried to document the different stages so maybe that'll help.  First off I primed my Space Marine black using GW's Chaos Black spray http://imageshack.us/scaled/modthumb/23/eghc.jpg  Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/276945-painting-ultramarines-the-gw-way/#findComment-3404222 Share on other sites
Dante72
Next, I painted the base coat using watered down GW Magragge Blue http://imageshack.us/scaled/modthumb/850/v8sh.jpg  and gave it a blue wash http://imageshack.us/scaled/thumb/833/kntf.jpg Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/276945-painting-ultramarines-the-gw-way/#findComment-3404226 Share on other sites
Dante72
I then went through all the classic step, I cleaned up the wash with Macragge Blue again http://imageshack.us/scaled/modthumb/836/l574.jpg  base coated the gold parts with Balthasar Gold from GW http://imageshack.us/scaled/modthumb/46/xm7w.jpg  and used Army Painter Warpaints to add the rest of the colors and washes http://imageshack.us/scaled/modthumb/560/z0lm.jpg Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/276945-painting-ultramarines-the-gw-way/#findComment-3404228 Share on other sites
Dante72
Finally did my best attempt at edge highlighting with Altdorf and Calgar, again from the GW range of paints. So, what do you guys think. Please remember, that this is my first attempt at painting a miniature ever :/ http://imageshack.us/scaled/medium/40/p1ed.JPG Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/276945-painting-ultramarines-the-gw-way/#findComment-3404232 Share on other sites
