Painting Ultramarines the GW way

Hi guys. I'm new to painting, but love Ultramarines. I wanted to paint the GW, but I'm a bit confused. Some tutorials use Macragge Blue as a base with their blue wash. After, the armor is cleaned up with Macragge again, followed by a highlight of Altdorf and a fine highlight of Calgar Blue. Other tutorials suggest cleaning the armor with Altdorf and just doing one fine highlight with Calgar. Any suggestions?

That's about the color scheme I'm looking for, too. I think you're right. If I would clean up after the wash with Aldorf, he would be a little too...cartoonish. I was also thinking to wash Aldorf but, that would still be too light as I would have to (or should) clean up after the wash. Thanks for the input :)

They aren't the same. They react to washes differently, namely that you need to use Badab Black on Boltgun and Nuln Oil on Leadbelcher. You will not get the same effect using them in the other combination. Also, Leadbelcher is actually a hair darker than Boltgun Metal, the later having a bit more metallic sheen to it. It's easier to see them side by side, as I did in my DA Paint Comparison: Old vs. New Paints.

Oh right. Fair play. To be fair, the old washes and new ones differ in that the new ones have a matte finish instead.

As for leadbelcher being a tad darker, it's not that much difference. Regardless, the end result is amazing no matter what combination one uses.

Anyone try Army Painter Warpaints? I'm seriously considering those for my basic colors, silvers and washes. The rest I wanted to supplement with GW cause Citadel paints will cost me an arm and a leg to amass

Vallejo all the way dude. :D (Thats just my opinion though) Game colour for your basic colours and I hear great things about the Model air range metallics. Their Liquid Gold range (a tad bit pricey) is legendary.

One more quick question, if I may. After doing some research, I picked up a small bottle of Vallejo Glaze Medium. Most people seem to prefer diluting their paints with some sort of medium, thinner etc. than just using plain water. The Vallejo site is rather vague, though. they have almost identical descriptions for most of their technical products. After getting the Medium, I now see that they have a plain paint thinner. Should I have gotten that one? or is the Glaze Medium a good alternative to water as well as?

Thanks for the help :).

Personally I like to 1:1 for starters. That's base and highlights and see how it works. It depends how much you want to blend the paint though. If you start at a higher level of dilution you can always thicken but if its too thick you can't really undo it. I do use the Vallejo thinner.

Thanks. I think I'll do that. And you're right, better to put the paint on too thin and thicken it, than trying to thin it after its on the model. Oh well, I guess it's back to hobby store for me...

I put my models together and I gotta say, the size of these things just scares the &@€? out of me ;)

Because they're small?

So, I sat down this afternoon and found the courage to start painting. Though I still need to paint the backpack and the Bolter with the two hands attached, I thought I'd throw some pics in here and you guys could see where I need improvement. I tried to document the different stages so maybe that'll help.

First off I primed my Space Marine black using GW's Chaos Black spray

I then went through all the classic step, I cleaned up the wash with Macragge Blue again

base coated the gold parts with Balthasar Gold from GW

and used Army Painter Warpaints to add the rest of the colors and washes

Finally did my best attempt at edge highlighting with Altdorf and Calgar, again from the GW range of paints. So, what do you guys think. Please remember, that this is my first attempt at painting a miniature ever :/
