Febelcrofas
Is this your first go? If so it's a belting first go. What brush are you using? It looks like you could do with one with a finer point for highlighting. All your steps look great man so keep it up and be patient! Dante72
Yes, Sir. Very first miniature I ever painted. Thanks for the kind words. I tried to take my time and not rush through it (though I was chasing daylight). l was really happy up until the edge highlighting stage. For example I mixed the Balthasar Gold with some Glaze Medium from Vallejo (couldn't get the thinner) and that really improved the fluidity. Maybe I should have done that with the Calgar? I used Army Painters Hobby Basecoating and Highlight brushes for most of it including washes and some of the details. For the edge highlights I took a Wargammer Detail brush but, I was a little frayed even before I used it and after a bit, some of the hairs are sticking out. I guess I gotta throw it our and get me a new brush. Febelcrofas
It's hard just starting because for me it took a long time to accumulate all my equipment. I have a day light lamp, I've found the brushes that I prefer etc. that's taken a couple of years. What I will say is brushes are very important. I'm sure there are plenty if faqs about brushs and brush care. Keep with it mate, you've made an awesome start. Welcome to the xiiith legion brother! Dante72
Thanks for the welcome! Out of curiosity, what brushes do you use? Are the Army Painters ant good? I keep them in a linen shash and I keep the plastic tips on. I also try not go bang th against the bottom of the water bowl when washing, but sometimes I might hit the bowl :/ Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/276945-painting-ultramarines-the-gw-way/page/2/#findComment-3404254 Share on other sites
Febelcrofas
I use Raphael brushes. Kolinsky sable. You get an amazing tip in a brush that can hold lots of paint. They are around a tenner each but I was going through about five or six gw brushes in the same life span as one of my new Rachaels. I've never used army painter ones so can't comment:) Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/276945-painting-ultramarines-the-gw-way/page/2/#findComment-3404256 Share on other sites
Dante72
I gotta learn to take better pictures. Dante72
Uploaded with ImageShack.com finished the Bolter and the back pack. Already I did better on the highlights - I was able to achieve much thinner lines. Practice really does make perfect. Dante72
Thanks, dude. I'm happy with the way it came out. I need to work on edge highlighting and working up different layers. facmanpob
Looking pretty good! Much better than my first attempts were Perhaps you could try a few silver or grey edge highlights around the bolter casing to help it stand out more. Nothing too garish, just a couple of strokes here and there will pick it out nicely. As far as the discussion about paints and brushes goes, I've used GW brushes exclusively until a couple of weeks ago. I needed a new standard brush, and have never really been all that impressed by the GW one, so I got the Army Painter Regiment Brush instead......Sooooo much better!!!! Seriously, miles better! I also got the Army Painter small drybrush as well.....again, much much better than the GW one. My next purchase will be a nice detail/fine detail size Kolinsky sable brush when I replace my GW fine detail brush....who knows, I may never buy a GW brush again.... Paint-wise, I've just made the change from Boltgun metal to Leadbelcher (my boltgun metal finally ran dry, boo hoo!). And, yes, they are different.... noticeably different to my eye. However, on the recommendation of some of the frater on this site, I tried the Army Painter Dark Tone and Strong Tone inks, as direct replacements for the old Badab Black and Devlan Mud washes.....and they are brilliant! Dante72
I picked up the Army Painter Mega Paint set which came with 6 Wargamer brushes. Right now I'm using their Hobby series base coat, highlight and precise detail brush. For my needs as an amateur they're fine. They hold a nice tip just every few strokes a hair starts to stick out, but hey, they're synthetic. I'm waiting to get a little better before I switch to the sable Wargamers. I agree, the inks are great. All in all the paints are pretty good. A little but more thinner than GW so I don't have to use as much water as with Citadel. Dante72
BTW I started by next Son of Guilliman and tried some free-hand work. Grizwald23
For brushes I've used the testers model masters synthetic brushes for as long as I can remember and they are a good decent brush and easy to find. However a couple months ago I switched to w&n series 7 and I've fallen in love. However I still use my model masters brushes all the time. As far as army painter brushes I've never really liked them since they never held their point for a long time. P3 also makes really good brushes and their sable I believe except their dry brushes. Dante72
I've been hearing really good things about the W&N brushes. The AP are good, but keep in mind that I'm only 3 minis into an army so anythings possible. The AP hobby series is fine, except for the stupid little hair that breaks away and sticks out from the point :/ Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/276945-painting-ultramarines-the-gw-way/page/2/#findComment-3410151 Share on other sites
DistroyA
To be fair, I even get the whole bristles coming away from the point thing with the Citadel brushes I have, but it's easily fixable, even if it is temporary. And those brushes are the best I've used in a long time. Dante72
I guess the bristle thing is inevitable. Right now, I'm on Army painter brushes and was planning on moving to Citadel after a few more miniatures to see what's what before moving on the W&N series 7. Right now, I'm still making novice mistake like drowning the brush in paint while mixing with water which leaves paint to dry between the belly of the brush and the ferrule :( Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/276945-painting-ultramarines-the-gw-way/page/2/#findComment-3410515 Share on other sites
DistroyA
That can be rectified easily. You need to get hold of The Masters Brush Cleaner And Preserver. You can get it off eBay for less that £10 (or $10 for that matter). It will be the best item you buy for helping you paint your minis. As and when you get hold of it, you'll be able to find a video on YouTube to show you how to use it (I'd explain myself, but I find it difficult to explain without actually showing someone). Dante72
Saw a video about that a while back. Definitely gotta look into that. I just thought that was for when I graduated to a higher class of brush i.e. W&N series 7? Is it worth getting for mass brushes like AP hobby or wargamer? I am painting my first ever squad of these guys as well, as we speak! I was wondering if you used the "Guilliman Blue" glaze on the blue areas? When I paint my mini's (black --> macragge --> drakenhof --> macragge) They just look dark purple to me, not the rich dark blue you seem to be getting. 'd love to hear how you did it! DistroyA
It's ALWAYS worth getting the brush cleaner I mentioned, regardless of the size, type and brand of brush. Hell, it even helps clean synthetic bristles, although not as effective in conditioning compared to sable. Also, I failed to mention that as a beginner of the hobby, you've made a fantastic start. Keep at it, and you'll probably get to pro standard. :) Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/276945-painting-ultramarines-the-gw-way/page/2/#findComment-3435485 Share on other sites
DarkMark
Garfy's Ultramarines are worth checking. Loads of tips for painting UMs on his blog. I like Army Painter brushes for the value to quality they offer, good work horses for the money.
