what to do with landspeeders

Recommended Posts

Hello brothers and sisters, I was wondering how you guys prefer to buy your landspeeders. I intend to run two and I am not sure if I should run them as one unit or two. I plan on having them with a multimelta and a heavy flamer if that changes how to split them.

I personally think land speeders are a great unit. I recently read a post about them and decided to use them on Tuesday at a gaming club.

http://space-wolves-grey.blogspot.co.uk/search/label/land%20speeders Not sure if you have read this article but it really does put the unit into perspective.

I ran a unit or 2 in my first game, and unit of 3 in my 2nd game as it was more points.  I ran these along side a mech army, so rhino and razBacks.

I played a against IG, and this guy went for mass troops, now this was only my 3rd ever game of 6th ed. I started them in reserves and they deep striked in. They were good and arrived when called for, and boy did they arrive in fashion. His objective on his corner edge in heavy terrain, however during his movement phase he rolled crappy on difficult terrain, so all his units bunched and only a few made it into the terrain. Drop pods land x2 heavy flamers hit 2 squads took 14 guards men. Luckily on the board where i landed, it was well hidden from the rest of his army. My speeders survived the following turn and just caused so much havoc in my turn again, being able to move and position my self for a great template firing arc.

Magnetising your speeders weaponry i think is a must. Personally i think they are a great unit and add alot of options and distract your enemy from the rest of your army. Also if used well, it will be hard for your enemy to shoot them down. I look forward to running 6 heavy bolters in a game soon, 18 heavy bolter shots...

Thank you both for your posts. I love space wolves blig and have read the article, though I know it was written for 5th so i wasn't sure if all that was said still applied. I also plan to magnatize so I can play with load outs and spend less dough ;) do you get the parts for a typhoon in the regular kit?

The group I game with tend to play Nids, Orks, and IG mass armies. Love running a squadron of double heavy bolter speeders. Like Mannyu78 if I'm not using the Fast Attack slots I'll run them as separate units. I keep them out at about 30" and moving.

I have 3, normally use 2; equip them with meltas and put them as separate units in reserve to DS later, going for the biggest, baddest vehicle/MC the enemy has and voila: They kill their target and then get killed in return most of the time. wink.png They are nice kammikaze unit that most of the time do its job.

Nice exchange: I kill your LR Demolisher/Bunker/Land Raider/Carnifex,/etc. and you kill my speeder(s). Yes every time.

So far I've had not much luck with them against hordes though, they struggle to find something worthy to torch before being gunned (glanced) down.

I mostly run them as Typhoons, usually seperately. That being said, the MM/HF version does see use in my Deep Striking Army of Pods & Wolf Scouts. THe biggest thing is to tailor them to your army. if you need mobile Fire support, then Typhons. If you need hard hitting unit, then Tornado of your choice.

I have a deep strike heavy army with long fang fire support at 1850 and I was going for the speeders at 2k. I think the mm hf version is more ideal for my army but the beauty of magnets is I can change as i go. Seems like the consensus is split em uo as I have no fast attack slots used. So I will do that.

So, If I am understanding this correctly, a land speeder tornado can essentially have two multi-melta?  one for switching out the HB and the other for the "upgrade" to a tornado?

That would be  a fairly potent anti-tank vehicle, right?  or is that overkill?

I have 6 of the old metal ones and run them all with a single MM. This is about to change though as they've been knocked apart to be stripped and repainted.

I'll be trying to work out how to arm them shortly. confused.gif

Anyone know where to find that thread? I would be interested in reading it.

I 2nd this!!!

There is nothing better for ratcheting up the pressure straight from the start. Run em cheap and dirty MM & FT, with little expectation of survival. On a lucky day they will be able to survive huge amounts of firepower and take out the worst gribblies making back their points many times over. I am a big fan of them.
