Wolf guard and jumppacks

Jump Packs provide Tactical Mobility and nothing more. For the amount of points that it takes to equip a 10 Marine pack of Wolf Guard with Jump Packs, you could buy them a Land Raider, instead. The Land Raider provides Tactical Mobility, Protection, and Firepower. The choice is clear.

The choice is clear that according the the rule of cool they will be awesome sauce to look at.  Lol ... In game terms they will not perform that well in most games as they will be a fire magnet, but every now and again they will kick some serious arse.  :D

Hmmm ... Someone kick me before I stupidly talk myself into building another points sink unit ...

*kicks SW1* ;)

If you don't mind running them under Allies rules, you could easily field them as a BA assault squad, in which case they becoming both scoring and much cheaper. They're still not a standalone unit, in the sense that you can rely upon them to take out at least one enemy unit before they bite it (unlike Sternguard, WG Terminators etc) but they do suddenly become a worthy counterassault/close support unit. Depending on how you're modelling them they could also be run as BA Death Company, in which they're still expensive as hell, but also a pretty good assault unit. Running them this way will mean they WILL get a lot of fire directed at them however, so be prepared to have them soak up casualties on the way in.

I have run a small pack of 5 occasionally & they are definitly cool, definitly a fire magnet once your opponent realizes what they are & absolutely expensive points wise. They are much more suited to mobile reserve to bolster your line where needed. That being said, there way more cheaper options to do the same thing LOL!!! But every now & then they're a lot of fun, especially if you want to see your opponent go"OH #$%##@%%!!!!" LOL!!!

What would you arm them with?

If Russ walked, so will I.

Wow, I knew he was good but I didn't realize Russ walked from Fenris to Terra and back. ;)

((Gawd i despise how the silly fluff line that Space Wolves dislike teleportation has been exagerated into a fear of teleportation, jump packs, flying, transports, and anything not associated with "feet on the ground". These are the Sky Warriors, who are taken from a sea-faring people.))

But they can jump over buildings etc, so could move out of line of site, or position themselves to jump over a building next turn, shoot and assault. I've played games where 12 inch as the jump pack flys saves 36 inches of driving a tank around the huge wall in its way.

Or is this another example of where jump packs are massively less cool than the Xenos Scum alternatives?

Unfortunately, it's a piece of fluff that Games Workshop seem keen to play on - we have a distinct lack of flyers... I do however agree - we had hundreds of ships, drop ships, troop transports, fighters - before the heresy. We still have Thunderhawks and jump packs (Sky Claws). We clearly aren't afraid of flying. And if I hear report of any of my units being afraid of anything - they'll be sent back to the reserves without their nightly allowance of mead.

Have you ever actually played a game with a unit of Jump Infantry? I only ask because it seems that you have an exaggerated view of their added capability over regular Infantry troops.

V

Well it would net us another 250 give or take msn-wink.gif

Hmmm ... When you put it like that maybe a 5 man unit with twin WC's for 365 points and 5 man unit with TH/SS for 465 points as well? yes.gif

Just a little OTT but would look extremely cool.

Lol ... Don't even look at the cost of mounting WG on bikes!!!

How much do you all think a jump pack should cost for a wolf guard?

At 10 points, I still don't think I'd use them in packs. Though I'd be more likely to field skyclaws with a wolf guard pack leader.

5 points? Hmm, maybe then! Still, give each model a power weapon and they're the same price as terminators... which might be about right, given that they've got their delivery mechanism baked in.

I'd probably consider it for 5pts/model, if they could also join a Blood Claw unit.

Oh yeah, whoops, I forgot that they can't even join skyclaws as it stands!

33 points does seem about right for a wolf guard with power weapon, bolt pistol, and jump pack. Given that they have power armour, they'd still be incredibly vulnerable. But on the other hand, they're maneuverable, they pack a pretty hard punch (4 power weapon attacks on the charge, and possibly a HoW attack too) and though 10 costs 330, you don't have to pay for the land raider (hell, you could just about buy a second pack for the same price).

They certainly wouldn't be outright broken when compared to other elite close combat units. They wouldn't be an auto-pick, but they'd be worth considering, at least.

Wow. And that's cutting the cost from 25 down to 5.

Val - I've not used them in an army myself, that one reason I'm keen to try them. I've seen them used to good effect by xenos scum. If I see something work well for others, I like to see if it works for me as well.

The Tau and Eldar seem to use them well. But I appreciate that those are jet packs rather than jump packs - and they have the hit and run option we don't have.
