Killing the Feral Knight

I really dislike the idea of Canis Wolfborn, not to mention the model is just hideous. The blatant rip-off backstory just takes away from Leman Russ own upbringing. Not to mention a feral-human taking on a Wolf Lord and saying it was a close-fought, is more of an insult than something impressing. Anyway, how would you guys officially kill off such a poor thought out character?

IMHO, he can die an epic death, just keep him dead and away from a future SW codex LOL

I would change him to a model for Harald Deathwolf (after all more unique ways to play and characters is always good), redo the model (it wears the moniker 'Squirrelous Maximus' for a reason) and just get rid of Canis as a character and in fluff - the initial thing of a feral-born warrior is far from original, hell even the Romans did it except theirs were twins who started building one of the greatest civilisations so far... whereas Canis just loped around with a bunch of shaggy dogs for six weeks and supposedly beat the crud out of a warlord in astartes armour... I know that it's a game and far from plausible but DAMN GW which idiot let matt ward do SW fluff because it feels like his influence..

All in all - with you Mav, a terrible model and even worse fluff to go with it.

I actually kinda like the model, but I do agree that canis's fluff is ridiculous, I usually field the model as a wolf lord or twc when I feel like putting it on the table. I would not be sad to lose the canis fluff, but if we do I hope they give us a fun new character to play with.

Killing him off acknowledges that he existed; better in my mind just to never write about him again, and just pretend it never happened.

It's no different than Wolf Guard Ranulf. He died a glorious death, fit for the sagas. Only difference here is, people loved Ranulf's fluff and was eager to play him.

Well, it's not quite the same; Ranulf had a codex entry and was a playable character despite the fact that in his fluff he was long since deceased. What I'm proposing is that he not get an army list entry and simply isn't mentioned again. If you write him off in the fluff then it acknowledges that he existed, and that there once was a guy who stole Russ' background story almost word for word.

^^^^THIS^^^^

I'm in full agreement with the Lore-Master.

Rescult the model to make it more "Fierce" and less "Cute Squirrel".  People can use it as a Mounted Wolf Lord or similar.  If there NEEDS to be a Character created for such......I think I could write a better one that what GW published for this Character.

Next codex get rid of TWC all together and the problem is fixed.

Yes they are a good unit if you like to WIN at any cost but come on they just made up a unit to sell to kids and power gamers.  What will we see next BA's riding the backs of giant bats?

Really feel like GWS dropped a clanger when they decided to mess with the fluff and add TW's to the codex.  Worried about what the next codex will bring.  :(

Agree to disagree.

Canis=bad; TWC=good

While Im not a huge fan of TWC from a fluff perspective I think its right that they stay- theres alot of SW players who have grown into the wolves with them being a good part of the codex and a fun unit.

Also, if we keep them perhaps we wont end up with anything more.... odd. No giant mega-walkers or bus sized wolves.

Besides, 40k is very grimdark blah blah blah... sometimes its good not to take ourselves to seriously.

.... now, back on the subject of Canis WolfBorn.

Im with Valerian, just drop him from the codex, and bring back Ranulf as a fluff story- you can counts as the anvil of fenris for his rules easily enough- and bring out a 'saga of the feral lord' that gives you a neo-wulfen WGBL/WL if you so choose, perhaps as an upgraded saga of the wolfkin?

Next codex get rid of TWC all together and the problem is fixed.

TWC are FAAAAR from a WAAC unit. I find it absolutely laughable that you think so. And how many codexes have come out since the Wolves codex that have featured another form of cavalry? Here is a hint,

ZERO!!

Nowadays a new codex is in danger of being given a mini titan with a horrible name.

Breaking News!

The Daily Fang is sad to announce the Canis Wolfborn spent so much time with the wolves he eventually dies of a extreme amount of flee bites. Sources close to him reported the constant itching was exasperated due to the fact he never removed his lighting claws.

Also, if we keep them perhaps we wont end up with anything more.... odd. No giant mega-walkers or bus sized wolves.

Wouldn't you feel left out then Grey Mage? tongue.png

Are you counting the new CSM or Daemons codex books?

On the subject of fluff, I think Canis's fluff is pretty horrible, not quite Draigo level but still bad. He's got a cool mini though.

Juggernaughts of Khorne were out long before TWC and Slaneesh discs/striders have been out just as longs as well. Considering the crossover with Fantasy, it is no surprise that the daemons have mounted units just like every other fantasy army.

Tau: mini titan walker thing

Chaos: daemon engines monstrous creatures

Eldar: mini titan walker thing

GK: mini titan walker thing

BA: nothing

DA: nothing

Apoc: Titans

Horus Heresy: nothing

So again, other then the Wolves codex which is older then all of the above who else has had cavalry introduced, that didn't already have it? Seriously, the stupidity that keeps coming up with regard to BA riding bats, DA riding lions, or whatever gets pretty annoying.

Frankly a new dex for the Wolves has a greater chance of getting the stupid ass wolfdread then a nix on TWC or even Canis for that matter.

Agree to disagree.

Canis=bad; TWC=good

Wow, agree with Wulfbane here. And I think Canis at his simplest is a interesting character. The model would be better if the wolf didn't look like it was going to slobber you to death... I have bashed together a model of my own for my Thunderwing list.

I can[t think of a fluffier unit in the codex than the TWC. And it's one of our best IMO!! It may appeal to kids and power gamers because of the models and the units strength respectively. But I for one cannot think of a cooler looking unit striding onto the battlefield than power armored soldiers atop hulking wolves.

You sir, forgot the fluffy gamers! AND WE'RE PISSED (not the drunk, the angry ;) )!!

End of Line

@deathscream. Did you just paraphrase the hulk from when he fought onslaught?? Kudos to you if it was intentional.

As for TWC, don't really see the need for them to be honest. The odd choice as a piece if wargear would have been pushing it IMO, but entire units of then loping around the galaxy is too much for my simple, old man brain to cope with.

The canis model is simply horrible if you ignore the rider, and I'd be more than if he was simply ignored in the next edition.

Having said all that, I'd rather we keep them than get a MC wolf, wolfnaught or über dread style teentitan. Just give all marines the same basic armoury of vehicles and equipment (TFC, flyers etc) and then allow each faction their own makeup and treats. That's all we need.

Also, if we keep them perhaps we wont end up with anything more.... odd. No giant mega-walkers or bus sized wolves.

Not at all, I have a huge Eldar army to add Wraithknights too if I reaaaaally want that kind of thing.

Quick thing, no where in his fluff does it say he beat a Wolf Lord. He almost beat someone that was a Blood Claw at best without armour or weapons. (This is wrong...)

Now that said it all depend if you look at the game with movie marines eyes or rules eyes, but the rules would allow a guardsmen to beat a Blood Claw

It says (pg. 54 Canis Wolfborn bio): "...After several abortive attempts to communicate, Harald met Canis' eyes and growled a challenge. The resultant duel was far more closely fought than Harald expected it to be..." - so actually YES he did indeed almost beat a Wolf Lord and not just 'a' Lord but a named Lord of the Fang...
