Sicarius & Battle Forged Heros

Recommended Posts

Hi,

I raised this question in another thread but thought this might be a better forum to get a response.

I am working on building a semi-fluffy list that includes Sicarius and had some questions around the special rules that he confers, namely:

- When are the special USRs assigned? Can I do so after seeing my opponent's list but before deployment?

- If deployed with a tactical squad, does Sicarius also benefit from Counterattack or Tank Hunters or no?

- If I combat squad a tactical squad with an assigned USR (say Tank Hunters out of a drop pod) do they both retain it or do I have to choose
only one?

Any help appreciated!

Codex SM page 85:

"Battle Forged Heroes: ... One Tactical Squad in an army that includes Sicarius can have one of the following special rules at no additional cost: ..."

Now this is slightly ambiguous, however the fact that it states "at no additional cost" would imply that the special rule is determined when you assemble the army (write the list) and should therefore be documented on your army list. So, no you can't choose/change it after seeing your opponent's list, unless you ask him and he allows the change.

BRB page 35:

"Counter Attack: If a unit contains at least one model with this special rule..."

So Sicarius would gain Counter Attack if he joined that unit.

BRB page 43:

"Tank Hunters: A unit that contains at least one model with this special rule..."

So again, Sicarius would gain Tank Hunter if he joined the unit.

Finally, as the special rule is granted to the entire tactical squad prior to deployment, if you choose to deploy the units as combat squads then both combat squads will have the special rule.

I was hoping that the USR assignment would fall "post list & pre deployment" so that Sicarius would give me a bit of flexibility in tailoring my list a tad to the opponent. Would go a tiny way to help justify his points in an all comers type of setting.

Like I said, the way it's worded implies to me that it's a decision made when writing the list.

However it is ambiguous enough that were your LGS to agree that it's determined either during or after deployment then so be it.

I checked the FAQ again last night and there's nothing in it about this. Therefore it may be advisable to send the FAQ team an email asking for clarification.

AFAIC the RAW answer is as noted in my first post.

I believe most people I know of play it as a pre-deployment choice. But the wording does actually lend credence to Dam13n's interpretation of it being a list building thing, similar to how people choose Librarian powers during list building.

I always assumed it was done as part of the list building stage, seemed like something like that would be explicitly stated as getting to pick during deployment if it was intended that way. GW rules aside you won't upset any opponents that way.

Some of you may now be wondering where your posts have gone. Don't worry, they're safe and sound in here: Sicarius in 6th.

Reason being is because they were a tactical discussion. This way you can control your discussion in the correct place, while this thread stays open and searchable for any further rules queries on the issue.

You know, I've always played that you choose on deployment, but you may be onto something Dam13n. I'll look more deeply into my Codex and FAQs when able though.

Hmmmm I to have always convinced myself this is how just because I thought Cato would decide on deployment being a master tactician and all but when reread I kind of see it too, still gona try and blag my way through tho makes him worth the points hehe
