No Foes Remain
Hail brothers (and sisters), I got £35 for my birthday and am looking to buy the Legion Praetors and paint them up as Imperial Fists. Now I did a search for this before posting but all I can really find is topics with the old paints and wondered if anyone can help me out with getting some decent Imperial Fists with the new paint range. Thanks in advance, Ventris. Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/277760-imperial-fists-with-new-gw-paint-range/ Share on other sites
Durus
Have a look at this. Don't have any of the new paints but it looks like Casandora Yellow over white primer might work. Here are some other post about painting yellow with the new range. If you don't want to use the glaze, I'd have a look around in other manufacturer's paint ranges though. GW produces the smallest bottles with the highest prices. No Foes Remain
Not really worried about the price, I get my GW stuff from Wayland games so theres around a 20% discount on everything. Thanks for the links though, looking at the paints I think I have an idea of how to do them but am not sure on a glaze... S.k.i.t.t.l.e
If you absolutely, positively MUST use GW paints, have a look here: http://www.games-workshop.com/gws/catalog/paintChart.jsp?catId=cat820002a&rootCatGameStyle= Personally I'd have to agree with Durus though, GW are pricey for the size. I much prefer Vallejo myself, larger bottles with a dropper on them for ease of use. With Vallejo Game Colour, you could use Gold Yellow as your basecoat, shade with Dark Fleshtone and highlight with either Gold Yellow mixed with white, or even find a lighter shade of yellow. Vallejo Model Air paints are the same size as VGC and are made to be used with an airbrush mostly, but if you use them with a brush, they are semi transparent and a VMA pale yellow would make a good highlight. Finally I'd use a sepia or other brown wash around the details to enhance them. Would cost you less than £8 for the four paints if you went with Vallejo, or around £14 if you bought all the colours GW tell you to use for yellow. Hope this helps. Bryan Blaire
If you are looking for darker IF, I would do a grey base coat (maybe black, but that might be a little harder to get good coverage on), and a base coat with Averland Sunset, then a Cassandora Yellow shade in the recesses. Reblend back with Averland Sunset and an edge highlight with Yriel Yellow and probably leave it there. If you want sharper edge highlights, use a little Flash Gitz Yellow. If you want brighter IF, instead of edge highlighting with Yriel, layer Yriel over the Averland base, then a smaller layer with Flash Gitz Yellow. To edge highlight, you can ever mix Flash Gitz with White Scar, or you can add a little water/glaze medium (I have been using Vallejo Glaze Medium) to a sparse amount of Hexos Palesun for a pale yellow edge highlight. If you want a very white spot highlight, just use White Scar straight from the pot. To blend it all back down and smooth/slightly conceal the edges of your layers, you can use a glaze of Lamenters Yellow. I don't personally see IF as that bright, so I would probably not do more than Averland, Cassandora, Averland, Yriel edge, and then a Lamenters glaze. Kastor Krieg
Definitely, two thick coats of Casandora Yellow, over white primer, is the way to go for Imperial Fists. Easiest and most foolproof method to get to that warm "taxi yellow". Here's a pic (out of focus, but nevermind, I'm after the color anyway), I'm making a Chaos Lord on a bike, based on the Dornian Heresy corrupted Dorn version, by our own Badaboom. http://img703.imageshack.us/img703/549/ilun.jpg You get the color easily, instantly and with added shading to boot. What's not to like? :) Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/277760-imperial-fists-with-new-gw-paint-range/#findComment-3408288 Share on other sites
No Foes Remain
Been thinking upon what you have said, my learned brothers, and I have come up with a rough idea of how to paint the yellow. Feel free to comment on it. Black Primer; Mechanicus Standard Grey; Averland Sunset; Casandora Yellow; Yriel Yellow; nuln oil in ressess; then battle damage and weathering. With this I think I could get them darker than the bright marines of M41 but still yellow to be recognised as Imperial Fists. But then again I don't know much about painting. Edit: Ordered the paints I needed and when they arrive I'll paint up a tester after I've found a spare model from my un-used pile of models. DarkMark
Grey is the new black as far as priming is concerned. Averland will give you a more secondary colour yellow, and so if you wanted a darker yellow then you've made the right choice. Pick up a bottle of Vallejo's Ice Yellow from their Model Color range for your final spot highlights. Remember less is more with yellow so keep the washes tidy; if you go splashing everywhere it will just look naff. Use the wash to line your yellow, then the Lammenter glaze to 'blend' the whole thing together at the end. This might give you some ideas for weathering. Good luck. No Foes Remain
Thanks for that link Mark. That does indead give me ideas about how to go about weathering them. Paints arrived today so I'm going to get started on a model that I found which had already been primed with the Chaos Black Spray and had a coat of mechanicum standard grey on him, so part of the work was already done for me. (Don't remember doing that at all, but he may have been a future tester for another scheme and I never got round to it). But I'll get the test model done and post it here for all to see and help me because I'm not a great painter.
