Mixing old with new

Recommended Posts

Hey all,

I'm transferring my GW paints to vallejo-style bottles and have noticed that I have up to 3 different incarnations of the "same" colour. As the bottles hold over 30 mL I have the option of just mixing them together... should I do this?

I've got the following near-matches:

Agrax earthshade

Devlan mud

Brown wash

Badab black

Nuln oil

Black wash

Imperial primer

Undercoat black

Golden yellow

Yriel yellow

Averland sunset

Iyanden darksun

etc etc...

Some of them are merely similar (averland and iyanden) rather than very close (so mixing them would leave me with a shade very close to averland sunset - so when I run out I don't have to worry about trying in vain to match iyanden darksun, which no longer exists), and I gather that the inks/oils are better than the old washes so perhaps I shouldn't mix them?

Would you mix any of these together? Where would you draw the line (e.g. not mixing washes and inks)?

Ah, right. Which citadel ranges are inks? My understanding is that inks are fundamentally liquid (rather than being a suspension of pigment) while washes can be made either out of acrylic paint (which has a suspension of solid pigment in it as well as medium) or they can be made out of ink.

Is that right?

In which case... which citadel ranges are actually inks, and which are just acrylic washes?
