Leman Russ Tanks. Will we ever get them back?

To be honest, the Leman Russ doesn't really seem like a practical vehicle for the space wolves. It can't keep time with the rest of our vehicles due to it's ponderous nature, it can't be carried by a thunderhawk because it's not built on the rhino chassis, and the crew quarters are designed for normal humans (and thus very cramped for the iron Priests who would ride inside). I know the Leman Russ Exterminator was a one-of heavy support choice in the old third edition codex, but, aside from perhaps a handful doing garrison duty at the Fang and our handful of other outposts, I'm not sure the Leman Russ actually works with the Space Wolves aymore.

I'm not so sure about that. I've toyed with a bare bones Russ sitting hull down in my DZ with a pack of GH holding an objective & just blasting away with the Battlecannon. It makes a great lynch pin for your forces. Dropping templates on your opponent while the rest of your packs get into position is a nice change. As for the interior, consider the Bane blade for the Imperial Guard & the Fell Blade for the Marines. You could save space by hardwiring servitors into place & so on or just build one for marines in mind like the Fell Blade. Just wishful thinking. LOL!!!

since by sheer prinicpal we should have acces to orbital bombardements, decoy droppods etc too. it's important to remember the ruleset of 40K doesn't represent the fluff well. we're not the only army to lose our imperial guard vehicles, the iron warriors lost their basilisks too

We've never had access to the Vanilla Leman Russ. We've had access to the Exterminator- If I had to guess why, it's probably because the Exterminator was the STC Russ recovered that led to the tank bearing his name.

And I wasn't talking tactics- Sure, a squadron of Russes is useful. I was talking logistics- Quite simply, Marines are rapid response shock troops. A tank that can't keep up with the rest of the army is a liability. Hence why I said it made sense mostly for Garrison duty. It's different with Guardsmen who have to port around artillery and a lot more logistical stuff, but given that it would require specialized transports anyway... It's just not practical.

Also, from a business standpoint, It makes more sense for GW to release a whole new kit for us to buy than to try to get some of us to buy the exterminator again. Which, honestly, is probably the better argument, given GW's been trying to strengthen their bottom line of late.

Space Wolves hauling around the Leman Russ would be like a modern day seals team having access to a M1 battle tank.  Space Marines in general are the quick strike, get in get out weapon of the imperium. If the mission calls for a main battle tank, then its a whole different mission usually one that, fluff wise, would be supported by the Imperial guard.

Having Imperial Guard as allies is a fantastic combination for the wolves and one that is getting more attention because of the blob meta game happening on the tournament scene. Plus it easily fills a air / anti-air support role for us.  If you want a Leman Russ in your list, there is no need to hope for it in the next codex, just take allies.

*shrugs* It was fun, and if you really want to simulate one with BS theres a simple addition of Pask to the Leman Russ of your choice to get BS 4, and some Bondsmen from the fang as allied IG- for those of us who have one sitting around.

why would we not have access to the tanks named for our primarch?

Where is the logic in this?  Just because something is named in honor of our Primarch it should now also be included in our armouries?  There are multiple Apache Indian (Native American) Reservations within the borders of the United States, however, we don't give them access to our AH-1 "Apache" attack helicopters.

Yeah, but the 3rd edition allowance was a holdover from the 2nd edition 'dex, which was written before the fluff was nailed down and the space marine chapters' modus opperandi was firmly established. Like I've pointed out, quite simply, there's no way for us to actually get a Leman Russ onto the battlefield; We'd have to hijack an Imperial Guard shuttle just to carry it around. The only modern Space Marine model I can think of that can't be carried via Thunderhawk is the contemptor, which is a relic of the Horus Heresy days back before what spaceships Marines could and could not used was established- And unlike the Leman Russ, no Contemptor is going to be assigned  to garrison duty, since, you know, they're inevitably one of the most honored members of the chapter (slightly less so for us due to the stigma attached to our Contemptors, but still present).

Which brings us to a pertinent question; How do we get the Contemptor Dreadnaught to the battlefield? Our other vehicles can be dropped via thunderhawk (or in the case of the land speeder, carried*), or we can use a drop pod, but the Contemptor? No way it's going to fit.

*Remember, the Land Speeder is to scale, but almost every other vehicle model (apart from some of the Necron vehicles, which can actually carry all of their passenger models) is scaled down for practicality.

Contemptors fit just fine in Lucius-pattern Drop Pods.

Ah. I thought the Lucius pattern Drop pod being oversized was it just being closer to scale. Well, that makes sense, then.
