Space Wolves Chapter: The Build

Recommended Posts

Well.  Hello reader.

I've gone and done it this time; I swore to myself to one day build the entire Space Wolves Chapter.

Currently, the issue is using 12 variations of the Great Company Datasheet from the new Apoc book; one shall be a GC and include the Brethren of the Great Wolf.  As far as the totals, all 12 GC's would be 120,000 points; most Apoc games would top out at 100,000 points for 10 GC's, if I could ever get that many into most game stores.  I'd likely need one hell of a gaming room for this collection...

I'm hitting something of an snag on Ragnar; I would need 16 GH Packs and 4 Dreads in Drop Pods of various patterns to make sure his GC is fluffy.  That would be two waves of 10 pods in a game, one turn one, the next turn two.  Is this awe inspiring, terrifying, both, neither...?

I also need 7 other Wolf Lords; I plan on doing two for some nice persons I know: Aldr and Kenned, both variants of their real life names.

One I'm inventing is going to be Kolvur Frostmaw: Runic Scout Armor (counts-as PA), and then a FB and likely a Stalker BP.  SotH could prove interesting on him, with a BoR thrown in, along with a WTN.

I'm open to discussion of this project; thankfully, I have a good number of years ahead of me hopefully.

so karack, is this your way of telling us you've won the lottery?! ;)

frankly said i wouldn't do it. with that amount of money you could actually get something more usefull such as a second, thrids, 4th and 5th army! because let's be honest, you'll never be able to play with that amount of points (because any NCO in your apoc team will likely bring his own force to play with.

In addition, at best 11 great companies may be present, there must always be a great company at the fang!

Yep: 10 Great Companies at most, I'd have two back at the Fang at that point. I laid that all out I thought in the OP.

As far as the other Army idea goes: Eldar is the only other force I even have any interest in, and this being a main project I'm fine with long term. I just need to figure out about how to approach this considering the fact that I'm looking at such a huge total number of infantry on the map.

Are you going to use any of the named Wolf Lords from the book, or create your own?

Nice question.

Current list is as follows:

Logan Grimnar.

Ragnar Blackmane.

Kolvur Frostmaw.

Aldr Ironbite (last name may change)

Kenned Stonestep (again, per above)

No clue on the rest right now.

well if you're truely serious about this the first thing to consider is storage, how will you store all these models, and how much room will they use. aside from that, and it actually costing a gazilion those are the main issues i believe

and offcourse getting high of all the glue-fumes!

First off, glue in stages, then switch out to some fresh air.  That, or the AC that blows right at me at home, just with longer shifts gluing and then breathing elsewhere.

Storage and transport are going to be the largest issues, considering I'm looking at so many Astartes in the collection once done.

Any feedback on the Ragnar GH barrage of pods issue I'm looking at in the future, from the OP?

I'll have to go search fu with a search engine to see what I can find on Army Transport Cases of all kinds...

the thing is though, you've now only calcolated the filled up droppods, in an all out droppod assault there will be decoy droppods, etc, will you be adding these too?

personally i think even collecting just a single great company (say 200ish marines, + ALL their vehicles etc (this does include a battlefleet gothic fleet!)) is already an insane objective (just think of all those thunderhawks you'll need!)

I agree that this is an insane task, I have almost finished collecting bodies for my ragnar great company, but it is gunna take years for vehicles and stuff.

I agree that sounds like an epic drop pod list, 10 turn 1 and another 10 scattered over turns 2 and 3 would be truly awesome to behold.

That's impressive, thank you. Nice Caestus and Storm Eagle, how do they handle for you?

Still not sure of vehicles yet, however I am currently torn between using a modified and GS'ed HB Backpack turned into a survival pack on my GH's. Cost spirals up alot though. Just for a conversion note, the HB back pack would lose the feed side and become a fun stuff bag for a GH with normal kit.

I have some WL's left; I looked and Bran does not quite seem like someone I would want to include. My reasoning is that Bran is not likely to have a very good long term fate; the Space Wolves cannot afford to have such a force around for much longer, and a pending suicide mission is likely to occur soon, I'd figure. I love the MotW fluff; just, not really something I can see having much staying power after a while.

So, Logan, Ragnar, Kolvur, Aldr, and Kenned. That's seven left, with likely two sitting out most fights back at the Aett. I was wondering if any other WL's have a great deal of fluff, and where to find it, outside of the current Codex. I'll start there, to try and figure things out.

BFG is going to be interesting; good thing I already got ten SM Strike Cruisers; I also have two Battle Barges, and a good number of unbuilt Cruisers I can small craft bay up, if need be. I have an unfinished Battleship hull with SCB's at the back broadside, and can go Emperor Class for Logan's vessel.

I've been thinking sven bloodhowl's fluff is cool. For rules you could go for a counts as Vulcan hestan and he might make a cool conversion model, and "ally" some sallys that happen to be modeled as space wolves. ;)

Just a fun thought I have been kicking around in my brain and you are welcome to it.

Just made a discovery that will make your ragnar great company even more interesting, the reserve rules for apocalypse say you can deploy units with deep strike any turn including the first, so your 20 pods could, in theory, all hit the board at once, even on turn 1, if you like

Yes it's considered 1 unit as a formation. Question I have is how do you handle the Wolf Scouts? The whole formation has to deploy at the same time and within 36" of the entry point which makes OBEL almost non usable if you role a flank you are no where near, and scouts can't take pods. And the scouts can't OBEL on turn 1 or 2 as it says only flyers, deep strikers and fast vehicles can come out of reserve in the first 2 turns. I guess you could put your scouts in a flyer to have them come in with the pods at the same time, like a Storm Eagle (which can deep strike too).

Don't include Scouts in the formation, just take them separately. Problem solved. smile.png

SW1, according to the Apoc book newest printing, i must take a single Wolf Scout pack for it to count as a Great Company.

So, considering what was said before about empty pods, this would be a likely total of 40 if I can manage it. The option to go with all of them turn 1 could make a few heads turn...

Still not sure on this, however this could prove interesting indeed. Just not sure if it feels right overall; Vulkan He'stan is a beast for his points, and not exactly a SW. The Apoc datasheet says only SW Packs may be a part of a GC; I'm pretty sure the other addons besides Stubborn are also worth it.

Edit: On Droppods, I was thinking towards the finished goal. With 12 GH Packs in Logan's GC, 16 in Ragnar's, and then 6+ in the rest, if I put four from Logan, the 16 from Ragnar, and 2 from each of the other eight GC's in this force, and four Dreadnoughts, I would have a nice 40 pods filled. With empties this goes to 80. Yea, this is feeling nutsoid, but oh so cool... If I can find a way to take ten Dreads in DP's with MM and DCCW/HF, this pushes totals to 50 filled, and 100 total...

Thank you all for the support and information. thanks.gif

I'll continue to keep an eye on this thread, and hopefully not have to make a new one too often if major changes occur.

Also, did not win the Lotto. I wish I did, at this point...
