Lone Wolf Idea's

So i recently made a post with a tournament list i will be fielding this week, however very last minute thought of toying around with a lone wolf.

Never ever have i used one, after reading some tactics on this and reviews on other sites, i have mixed feelings about this unit. I was hoping may be some of you can share you're experiences with lone wolfs good bad? What builds do you use?

THe single unit its self is very cheap, but the points add up quickly if you want it to survive. What do you guys lone wolfs.

I am not a hugely experienced player but i love to run them in terminator armour, storm shield and chainfist. Two of these running at your enemy is pretty scary for them. A cheaper option is just termy armour, Power axe and melta bombs which is also quite effective

I also run 2 Lone Wolves with TDA-Chainfist-Storm Shield. I have another modeled up for manning my Quad Gun with just a storm shield, and lastly the power armored version BT_Cennar spoke of, but I ive mine MotW, points available.

The CF/SS I put as far up as possible, and just run them towards my opponent. They are guaranteed to take some turn 1 and most likely turn 2 fire off of your other units. I have had the most success 'tar pitting' them in hoards. They are not as good against elites and massed fire power, but at least you aren't losing any points over them. Ans they are incredibly cheap for what they can do, even when suited up!!

End of Line

I ran one once but it was pretty poor,  TDA Hammer and shield.  I upgraded him to a lord with saga of bear and put him in a pod.   5 games at a tournament he didnt cause a single wound.  So I guess you could say the Lone wolf was better,  but really,  they both sucked quite a bit,  lol.

Still I love the fluff and model!

Lone Wolf w/ 2X Plasma Pistols, MotW, 2 Fen.Wolves - 85pts.

Run him in a foot-slogging Grey Hunter pack.  since he's not an IC, he doesn't actually join them and your opponent either shoots the GHs or the LW (with a Cover save thanks to the GHs).  He can launch his Assault before the GHs, and absorb the Overwatch fire (especially useful against Tau).  And he will make Dark Angels players even greener with envy...

The chainfist-storm shield tank hunter is hit or miss. They can put a lot of pressure on the opponent, but they're dependent on positioning. In the one game I've run them, one of the Lone Wolves killed nothing and eventually died to a predator Annihilator taking off his last wound, while the other managed to kill ~450 points of models (A Land Raider, a Blood Angels Predator Annihilator, and a couple of assault marines) and tank most of the rest of the army's shooting.

Bare bones TDA manning the gun emplacement on an Aegis is rather un-fluffy, but it's cheap and gives you a character behind the gun for precision shots.

I've also heard people praise the Plasma Pistoleer, but I've never tried it myself.

Well worth taking, but make sure you play test him a few times before your event as he does take a little practice to get a feel for what role he fills in your list.

Example of tactical roles; If you need a unit to guard your long fangs because your opponent has some infiltrating genestealers or the like. You can charge him straight forward hoping he will absorb the first round of shooting or like Dswanick said, "hide" him in a unit to be used as a shock trooper. All of these and more are great options for the Lone Wolf, so yes take one, but remember he is not meant to survive as a VP should not be taken lightly. cool.png

I think what people are saying for the dual p.pistol is that its good as he puts out quite a bit of high AP, but unlike other models, you dont worry so much about him wounding himself with overheats, as you actually WANT him to die (otherwise he concedes a VP).

For me, i usually run mine in TDA/SS/CF, chuck them at the front of my lines, and run them up the field towards the biggest/meanest/tankiest thing they have. I find they draw a lot of fire off your scoring units for a turn or two, then if they do survive, can cause a lot of damage.

Things ive had a lone wolf carve through:

Light tanks aplenty

Land raiders

Chaos Lord in TDA in a challenge, and subsequently his entire retinue (3++ with FNP GO!).

Large mob squads - one guy holding up 20+ guys for 2/3 turns.

Plague Marines - with the beastslayer rules they are especially deadly against anything T5 or above, so eat plague marines for breakfast (as long as those damn poison weapons dont get you first!)

Yes ive also had a lot of them die on turn 1-2, but only really if the opponent concentrates a lot of fire into them, which  is fine as far as im concerned.

Gonna have to try the 'hide one in a grey hunter pack' shenanigans, sounds like it could be fun :D My only issue with this is having to then footslog grey hunters, which is a problem for me at the moment as my housemate (who i play 90% of games against) takes a twin vindicator deathguard army, which tends to annihilate footslogging marines :D

All great idea's and i like the idea of using a single model to sit back and defend vs infiltrators. I do not get what is so good about the dual plasma pistol though, may be i missed something?

2X S7/AP2 shots plus d6+2 Rending attacks on the charge,  What's not to love?

Excellent, love running as many motw as possible, i had used this configuration of WGPL before (usually in outflanking priest/plasma death squads), but sounds hilarious to do with lone wolves too, may have to start running one alongside a CF/SS/TDA lone wolf for fun :D
