New Codex Angst & Expectations

I was told the other day that I must enjoy my Grey Hunters, Longfangs & Rune Priests of the current codex because they will defnitly be nerfed in the next Codex. I have some sympathy with that: Grey Hunters should be more expensive and the plasma load out should cost more, and perhaps they should limit the number of Runepriests. What are your expectations of a new SW codex?

Hopefully they will encourage fluffy units to be taken again. Too often I see just grey hunter, dune priest and long fang spam on the table. Hopefully fen wolves, wolf priests thunder cav ect will be updated to be balanced with the rest of the units. Like they have done with the tau book where everything is viable and costed correctly and multiple effective builds can be created to the players content. Oh and please please give us some anti aircraft stuff so I can destroy those blasted hell turkeys. So broken! ;)
Its the spam where I notice the flaws in our codex. My opponents have learnt how to deal with that though and I have come up new creative ways to keep a step ahead, my favorite being a large pack of Fenris wolves and landspeeders. I also dont leave base without at least 3 Drop Pods.
I was at the local HQ store and I mentioned that we don't have access to a flyer without allies, and the HQ guys response was we don't have access to the codex marines ones cuz we are getting our own (caveat, this was not an official statement, but he is a gs employee, so who knows what he knows). This news of course excited and worried me, but as long as its not a wolf with wings that should be fun. ;)
In latest Novel Blood of Asaheim theres the story about an old Spacewolf who is an ace pilot of a Thunderhawk. Also the whole vibe the novel gave off was that the GH packs were seldom at full strength. I hope they dont change the basic equipment of a GH, I would rather pay more per GH, than them losing either their Boltpistols or chainsaw or bolter.

To be fair, the Bolt Pistol+Boltgun+Chainsword is new; The catch is in older editions, they could use the boltgun as a bolt pistol, but they didn't gain the bonus attack for charging.* Honestly, probably better to bump up the point cost by one and keep the current wargear, or maybe make the bolt pistol a +2 points upgrade.

My rough expectations for changes

-Codex-wide changes: Night Vision is back (Which is why the Thunderwolf Apoc formation gains Acute Senses). Or Acute Senses disappears entirely. Wargear discounts disappear as is standard. Minor price adjustments to vehicles. A flier added somewhere because they sell well as a general rule. Probably 1-2 other new units.

-HQs: Change Rune Priest and Wolf Lord to their codex counterpart's prices. Randomized powers (two disciplines, one about storms and one about wolf spirits with Jaws as a 2 warp charge power) should balance the Rune Priest after the Runic Weapon becomes a magic hat. Wolf Priest needs revamping, which may leave them at a different price. Likely addition of apothecary upgrades for Wolf Priest (a la 3rd edition 'dex). Battle Leader probably drops to like 50 points.

-Troops: Blood Claws drop to 13 points. Grey Hunters jump to 16 points, maybe with the option to be at 14 points but lose one of their basic weapons.

-Elites: Minor price changes for wolf guard including more reasonably priced Hammernators. Pack Leader rules likely to be altered, either making them upgrades to their unit, or with wolf Guard becoming Command Squads like they were in the 3rd edition codex. Wolf Scouts revamped. Possible addition of a special character (Erik Morkai) to make them troops.

-Fast Attack: Blood Claw variants get cheaper. Rest of the Fast Attack slots are fine, honestly. TWC are no longer rage-inducing in the age of Monstrous Creature spam.

-Heavy Support: Long Fangs stay as is, apart from maybe a drop to LD 8 (Focus Fire stays, since they're perfectly fine with codex specific split fire rules as demonstrated by the Tau).

*My knowledge of the third edition Codex comes from a bored half-an-hour in a used bookstore, so bear in mind my memory is likely to be somewhat spotty in that regard.

I'm not too concerned about an update to a 6e codex for the Wolves.  IMHO all of the recent codices have been well-designed, and my expectation is that will continue.  The good news is that we already started out with a good codex, so improving it is a matter of refinement, rather than a complete redesign.

I've got tons of ideas on how to do the redesign, but so far nobody from GW has contacted me to discuss.

My objective with a new version would simply be to make anything and everything at least viable (focus on achieving that internal balance), and let the players shape their forces as they see fit.  In both the 3e and 5e codex the authors made certain choices intentionlly overpriced to discourage their use (e.g. by making Wolf Guard with Jump Packs, Bikes, Hammers and Shields, etc. prohibitively expensive); they shouldn't do that.  Either allow an option or don't, but if you do you have to keep the costs fair/appropriate.

I've seen some interesting "sneak peeks" at some of the alleged SM new units and bits. Looks like AA embellishments for the Rhino are on the way....not positive if they'll be available for ALL Astartes or restricted to specific Chapters but they do look interesting and potentially lethal enough to even the odds when facing Flyers.

Is that a vertical, oversized Demolisher Cannon?

Astartes sure know how to turn siege weapons into anti anything guns.  Still, likely one shot; and likely, really painful for whatever it hits if it does!

Edit: Hm, look, grasshopper, look... (Missed the pylons on the upper pic first time.)

Just a WAG, but I think the first picture is for a variant of the Hunter Missile (SAM) and the second shows rotary possibly twin-linked Anti-Aircraft guns.

Thank you for that clarification, really helps increase the options in my mind.

I'd personally favor the the AA variant, but, considering the dice to actually do anything to flyers typically need 5+ I can see why they also have to give us a missile.

Agreed. Plus, I have no idea how the... thing... is supposed to work. It's to big to be armor (You'd run into problems with a Marine's limbs bending at different points than the armor), but it's too small to be a true battle suit. They'd be a lot more tolerable if the legs were to scale with the torso and the head, though.

I was absolutely dreading the arrival of this thread with the leaksnof the new SM codex.

The pics are all over the 40k related tumblr pages, have been for a couple of days now.  I didn't post the pics of the new "character" models because they were UltraSmurfs.

Has nothing to do with you posting the pics. I meant that with the pics and info leaked of the new SM codex, a thread talking about a new SW codex with the same recycled wishlists that are always posted in new SW codex threads was bound to show up sooner or later.
I personally kinda like the new centurions. A little conversion to make em a bit more wolfy and dynamic and I will be happy. Like the new aa rhino as well. Mehreens are finally going to be balanced against other armies again. Cheers for posting the pcs( the new librarian looks awesome btw)

To the OP and all of those who have knowledge. These rumors and "i heard one say"... where are you guys getting them from and are they even someone who actually knows? I really see no reason to Change much of the Space Wolves, it's not like we have a super over powered Codex and Army that smashes everything in it's way. I believe there are plenty of Codices that have way more going for us than they do. The cheap troops balances out in something we lack or something we don't do as well as other Chapters. I am a new player so that may have something to do with my bias, but I normally feel pretty disadvantaged when it comes to facing other Chapters on the table top. Don't even get me started on the lack of a flyer.... I would be really really pissed if they tried changing some of the things that make Space Wolves... SPACE WOLVES! Thoughts?
