Here do I swear, with final breath of life escaping my lips, fealty and service to the Dead Word and King of the Abyss.

For the sovereignty of the Four Winds, and their thirsting Neverborn, I do cast my soul into their whims as homage to my Lord.

Just as crimson blood drains from my wrists, so too does my will. The Neverborn may tear at my spirit and and forever feast on my grave,

Unless my King see fit to drag me from the sea of souls, and bring me into this world anew by His hand as His vassal.

My voice I silence, so that His may be heard. My ambition I tarnish, so that His is seen true.

My blade I grasp, so that His foes be slain. My lords I follow, so that that His will be done.

My life I sacrifice, so that His reign may continue. My soul I ruin, so that He may live eternal.

I call upon the Pantheon as my witness in these final moments, for with my final breath, I do make this covenant whole.

I plunge myself body and soul into the Abyss, so I may be judged worthy of service.

- The Covenant of the Abyss

Good evening, brothers and sisters. So, after that lengthy (and probably over the top) opening, I do welcome you to my newest WIP thread. As I'm sure you have noticed, this will the the progression log of my Word Bearer Warband known as the Chapter of the Ruined King. Here I will be posting models, painted pieces, lore, stories, and occasional artwork for these Bearers of the True Word aswell as their allies that herald from various regent Legions. While the progression of allies will come as time progresses, I can confirm that Night Lords and World Eaters are among those allies and will probably the most numerous of them. But, of course, the primary concern here is my Word Bearers who will form the main body of this army.

So, without going into too much detail, I would like to explain a bit about where I plan to go with this army. One thing that has always struck me as incredibly awesome and awe-inspiring in War Hammer is Chaos Knights, true and absolute devouts of Dark Gods that fight in their name with beautiful and baroque armour. Now, to be perfectly honest. I do not enjoy playing Fantasy in the least, so actually playing Warriors of Chaos is simply not an option. However, I have always wanted to incorporate the many bitz that I've acquired over the years from their bitz range. Anything from baroque helmets to their beautiful shields and twisted mutations. It has simply always been a bit of an obligation, if you will, to make every Chaos Marine model as chaosy ans twisted as possible. To that end, Word Bearers no only fit the twisted and mutated concept but also ride the themed of 'paladins', true knights of chaos who will fight and die fore their Gods.

Here is Dark Disciple Zerrith. Yes, Dark Disciple, not Apostle. I'll explain to you his fluff at a later date when I have more time but I am simply too tired for now and

Update time: WARNING GIANT WALL OF TEXT INCOMING
So guys, as I said in my earlier posts, fluff is a very important thing to me. It’s what makes Warhammer 40k so interesting and it’s why I’ve stuck with this game for 13 years. That being said, and this is perhaps my biggest and most exciting project I’ve done in years, fluff and background plays a major role in this army. I know that the Chaos Codex isn’t the most fan-tabulous thing in the world (though I find it rules-wise to be acceptable) I stick with this faction because there just isn’t anything quite like Chaos. It’s my favorite army since I was a wee-lil un and it’s going to stay that way. Damn the rules!

So let’s begin, shall we?...

-Theme-
As with every army, a standing theme is always very important to an army. It adds a very strong sense of connection to keep the army together and adds a vessel for players (and readers) to relate to it. Word Bearers are interestingly enough one of the most lenient Traitor Legions in that aspect because faith is just as varied and diverse as the stars in the void. It really allows people to take their spin and add their own belief systems into the army. So much of the Word Bearers is about philosophy and spirituality that you can really make this army your own and no one else’s.

As a child, I’ve always been fascinated with ancient medieval knights and feudal kingdoms. I mean, who hasn’t? I loved tails of knights, honour, dragons, and all that wonderful Jazz, and I still adore such things to this day. It may sound strange but because of this fascination with such things, I’ve developed my own code of ethics and strive to follow it. Nothing crazy, just trying to be all I can be. Because of all these things, the theme that I’ve chosen for my army is a dark medieval monarchy theme, more specifically a twisted look on the Arthurian Legends. These Word Bearers are no simple missionaries of the Gods, they are Dark Knights who fight for their faith and their Lord, the Ruined King. May sound a tid bit cliché but ah, this is something that I have always loved and I’m sticking to my guns.

Le Morte d’Arthur was one of my favorite tails growing up (still is) and I assure you that you’ll be seeing a great deal of connection to that in my works. Of course there will be many many other inspirations that I pull from, but this will be my unifying grasp that holds it all together.

-Beginnings-
The Chapter of the Ruined King began like most of its kin, in the age of unity that was the Great Crusade. By the will of Lorgar, two chapters were born as kin, sister-clans to bear the shield of righteousness and take the fight to the enemy is the most perilous and fiercest of battles. These two chapters would one day come to be Known as the Chapter of the Ruined King and the Quillborn Chapter, chosen by name of their masters and blessed by Lord Aurelian himself. To the Quillborn, deemed by their Chapter Master Ventus, were a Chapter of those warriors born in embryonic tubes who believed themselves born as literal servants of the Word. They took their shield to the void in thick ship-to-ship battles and none stood against their prowess in void combat. The Chapter of the Ruined King however chose a different path. Created under the watchful gaze of the young and newly appointed Chapter Master Allant, the Chapter of the Ruined King was a chapter that prided itself upon the purest of brotherhood and strength in unity. Where the Quillborn took their shields to the void, the Ruined King took their shield to the earth, proud and resolute warriors who excelled in siege warfare that matched the honoured parallel of Dorn’s own Siegebreakers. There the two chapters sailed across the stars in perfect unity, fighting back to back and seizing earth and sky in the name of the Beloved Emperor.

Chapter Master Allant and his kin sailed the stars upon the Silent Slumber, a marvelous piece of craftsmanship from the docks of Mars itself. Sailing alongside her sister-ship Deadsong, the two ashen gray vessels and their Imperial Army contingent were designated Exploratory Fleet 837. They sailed the stars in search of worthy foes, seeking out the strongest and most fortified worlds to test their mettle against the enemies of the Imperium. Within the spam of but a few decades, both Chapters earned honours and glory within their chapter and the Imperium as among their legion’s finest specialists.

-Allant-
Chapter Master Allant, a name that would come to be reviled and feared as the ‘Ruined King’ came from a very unlikely background. The young Colchian boy was born into the family of a retired knight that had once been given the honour to guard Lord Aurelian and his covenant. Unlike most knights who took to politics and mercantilism once their role as warriors ended, Allant’s father found joy in a modest life as a florist. This was by no means a job for peasants for among the many plants he took stock to, his father tended to the sacred and beloved Moon Lilies loved by all of Colchis. He enjoyed the modest income and respect he gained but did little else with his life. In his youth, Allant asked his father why he chose such a life when others of his former status took to the sword. His father simply said with the softest of smiles that ‘power means nothing if one is not content with their own life.’

Allant had a childhood like most others. He did as was asked of him and attended the private scholastic tutoring with his friends. Unlike most, he did not flock to hear the broadcasting messages of the ‘Angels in Gray’ but would listen from afar with cold curiosity. He spent most of his time watching his father at work or lay about in the hanging gardens in the heart of the city of stone petals. He was lying in the gardens and watching the clouds roll by when he was blotted in the shade of a great vessel the color of ash. The young boy had been selected by the Angels of the Emperor to become one of them, a chaplain of their legion arriving upon the family doorstep as was their custom. The child bid his crying mothers and sisters goodbye, and hugged his father who offered but one last word of wisdom that would echo for ten thousand years to come. 'Only you may claim your faith, my child. '

Brother Allant rose through the ranks of the Legion as was the fate of many legion heroes, first serving in the Chapter of the Burning hand and rising to the rank of captain before being elevated to the prestigious rank of Chapter Master, youngest of his kind. Despite his excellence in battle, brother Allant found himself distant from his kin. He did not share in their full devotion to Lorgar and could find no solace in the act of praryer. No matter how many times he visited the chaplains for guidance, he could find no connection to their faith.

When he was granted the rank of Chapter Master, Allant was given the chance to find himself a connection. In the new recruits and grizzled veterans alike, he forged his own interpretation of faith, not through prayer and scripture but through action and honor. Above all, he desired unity, and he forged such a brotherhood in the Chapter of the Ruined King. The warriors of the Chapter turned their devout loyalty to Allant and each other, fighting as fierce and honorable warriors that kept to the rigorous code of ethics adopted by the old knightly orders of Colchis. Fortress after fortress they brought to ruin and cheered like howling Space Wolves when they stood victorious over the conquered walls with Allant at their head. 'Glorious King Allant' they began to coin the term, and they were to be known as his knights.

The Chapter found itself at the very height of glory but all that changed when the 'Truth' came to the Legion.

-The Horus Heresy-
The shame at Khur left a bitter taste in Allant's mouth, as well as that of his chapter. Shameful it was to be brought low by the Emperor, but their shame was a pale shadow compared to that of the rest of the legion. Despite much of Chapter Master Ventus' disapproval, Allant (who was the charge of Epeditionary Fleet 837) had decreed that they would not follow the protocol of Master Lorgar with each conquered world. They would pacify it, ensure that the people are compliant and left with a life that was content, and left. Allant was not one who sat well with forcing faith upon others particularly one he did not truly believe.

When the word of the 'Primodrial Truth' came to the Expeditionary fleet by word of Kor Phaeron, Ventus and the Quillborn were more than willing to accept the new faith, but Allant was not so sure. He attended the meetings of Lorgar's most trusted sons, and remained silent throughout each of them.

When the dropsite massacre came, The Chapter of the Ruined King landed in full mass upon the world of Istvaan and begrudgingly slaughtered their own kin at the will of their Primarch. During the thickest of fighting, the Silent Slumber fell to the guns of the Iron Hand's flag ship and she burnt in the atmosphere before sailing across the bleeding sky in a meteor shower of wreckage. Allant, despite all his rebelliousness and distance from the others of his legion, was among the beloved of Lorgar. Lorgar believed that his son was merely a quiet soul but loyal just as any other. His son was troubled by the killing of his own kin, nothing more. This was a foolish mistake the Primarch would come to regret.

In an effort to 'raise Allants moral' (or more appropriately buy his love), Lorgar gifted the Chapter of the Ruined King the newly finished Abyssal Class King-Ship, The Blessed Lady as a token of apology for their lost vessel and a gift of honur for their reads on the killing fields of Istvaan.

-The Purge-
Following the Massacre at Istvaan, Lorgar saw the division in his Legion, those few Terrans amongst the Legions who still held love for the Emperor. With great reluctance, Lorgar convened the first Brotherhood, a group of his closest and most trusted sons. Amongst those sons, he called Allant into the fold, believing that his son was utterly devoted to him. When the truth was laid down by Aurelian's lips, that the Terrans must be purged from the Legion, each and every officer in attendance voiced their approval.... All save one.

'No' was the only word the uttered from Chapter Master Allant's lips. The entire Brotherhood was dumbstruck with disbelief, most of all Lorgar himself. Without another word, Allant rose from his seat and left the chamber. Soon after, he was called in to Lorgar's personal chambers upon the Fidelitas Lex. The Primarch was not angry, though he was deeply upset. With the infinate patience born of an Emperor's son, Lorgar tried to reason with his son and desk understanding in Allant's refusal. But Allant would hear none of it. He claimed that Lorgar may do whatever he wished to the legion, but he would not lay a finger upon a single one of Allant's men, Terran or not.

Lorgar, with reluctant, pulled rank on Allant, claiming that he can strip Allant of his rank and kill the Marines himself... But the commander of the Ruined King simply raised up a gauntleted hand and soon enough the com-links burst with life that the Blessed Lady's vast armament was powering up... With every single battery and lance aimed upon the Fidelitas Lex. Without hint of anger or rage, Lorgar conceeded to the point but simply asked the question of 'why?' he did not understand why the commander would slaughter on Istvaan and yet refuse to do what was necessary within their own Legion. Allant merely turned and said.

"You have my love and my loyalty, Father, but you will not have my soul.... I will not stain it for you as Argel Tal did..."

In the end, it was found out that there were no more than 6 Marines within the Chapter that still bore origins in Terra, yet still the Commander was willing to kill himself and his father for those men. This act further solidified the Chapter's utter loyalty in Allant, but further ostracized them from there kin.... And defacing Allant as an ungrateful bastard of a son....

Sorry for the double post but I just wanted to get this thread atleast a little up to snuff on more recently finished models that I have posted on my WIP log. Firstly here is my first completed Terminator for King Allant's retinue. Heavily inspired by Dark Ven's work. Gotta love that guy.

And now for some standard marines. the Plan is to have a full Tactical Squad (and by tactical I mean bolters only, two Plasmas, and a Champion with a Combi-plas in a Rhino) modeled in roughly a week. Normally it would take far less but work has been eating all my hours away as of late. and this is my last week of work. So wish me luck, eh?

Regardless, here is Sergeant (He HATES to be called Champion) Kor Raanan. Raanan is an ancient as Hell Astartes dating back to the Unification Wars of the Sol System. While not a child of Colchis, Raanan is also not one born from ancient Terra. Raanan was child born within one of few remaining Hive colonies of Venus. There such small and rundown bubbles were the only means of surviving in the completely uninhabitable wasteland. In the prison domes, people slaved tirelessly in the atmosphere cycling plants or the Underground mines for greedy warlords who waged constant war in volatile tunnels for resources and food.

Raanan's features (or what is left of it that is human) is a constant reminder of where he came from, thick leathery dark flesh wrinkled and stained from sweat and atmospheric pollution. When the Imperium came to Venus, Raanan was one of many children offered up to the Sky Warriors in hopes that such offers would appease the distant empire and offer the hungry people refuge and aid. Little did they know that their situation would never change, and their 'tithes' would increase their laborious production tenfold to fuel the War Machine with deepground minerals and atmospheric chemicals used for the reviled White Phosphex munitions.

Raanan had always been an inquisitive soul, and as such he found himself quite comfortable within the XVII Legion, even if his brothers did not always feel the same. By nature, Raanan has always loved to question, to debate and would take any chance (still does) to bring the Metaphysics of religion into question, both playing Devil's advocate at many points and asking questions that many might have seen as going a bit too far. To be truthful, Raanan was a very religious soul, and thought it was healthy to question one's own faith because that will only make the bonds stronger. Because of this, the Chaplains of the Legion could never offer their approval for his promotion past the rank of Sergeant and he had quite contently remained there for the entirety of the Great Crusade.

Although he was not one of Terra, Raanan was 'close enough' to many of those who oversaw the Brotherhood Culling. Were it not for the intercession of Chapter Master Allant who protected his own, Raanan would have been executed for the simple matter that he was born on a different world. For saving his life, Raanan has sweared undying loyalty to Allant, yet at the same time he questioned that it might have been better for the Chapter if he had died.

Now, over Ten Thousand Years, Raanan has become something of a spiritual adviser and adversary for much of the Chapter, always questions, always putting the faith of his younger brothers to the test. Many times has he been offered now the rank of Captaincy or Chaplaincy but each time he has politely refused and remains content as but a simple Sergeant. Because of this, the Chapter holds immense respect for the grizzled warrior and have unofficially bestowed upon him the addition of 'Kor' to his name as a sign of reverence, to which the ancient Warrior simply allows a soft smile to play upon his mutated visage.

So, here is Kor Raanan on the battlefield, lost in thought as he gazes upon his rosary while one of his boys is probably trying to mow down the Orks or Imperial Guard that are heading straight for them. Just another day in the service of one guy who never stops thinking.

Hey Noctus.

I quite like the fluff. I wonder why you haven't cited Demon and Dark Souls as sources of inspiration, those are great games.

The conversions are really cool. Hope we'll get more as soon as possible ! smile.png

Haha, yes I suppose I should have mentioned the Souls series under my sources of inspiration. Yes, both of those games are a major influence (Hence where I got Allant's name) . Hell, I'm often finding myself listening to their soundtracks while I work on my models.

Glad you like them. Keep your eyes peeled though, because Word Bearers aren't the only thing I'll be making, and some will be adorned in the Black of Shame.

Really cool fluff, and really cool models I must say! Though, the official background is that no Terran-born was alive within the Legion when the Drop-site Massacre occurred. The WB did not need to purge their ranks like the DG, WE or SoH did, because the purge had already taken place.

http://wh40k.lexicanum.com/wiki/The_Brotherhood#.UgZPxD_LJ8E

Anyway, it's your story, and you can of course tell it any way you want. It looks like you already though of this by having Raanan surviving thanks the the protection afforded by Allant.

Looking forward for more. :)

Thanks, man, that means alot. Ya, the whole brotherhood thing was a bit of a strange thing. When I read up on it, it didn't exactly state when it happened, only that it was around that time. The only thing I really remembered of it was Erebus alluding to it on Istvaan. So the way I see it, is that the culling began before the dropsite massacre but because the legion at the time was split, it wasn't entirely done. So, following the dropsite, the betrayal in earnest. I didnt really want to step on a lot of toes about the whole Terran thing, so I simply left it as being only around five or six of the Marines in the entire chapter were Terran, a negligible number I feel and well, after Allant threatened to gun down his own Primarch, I think many didnt exactly consider him or his men to be part of the Legion. :P

True enough, though...

I just can't help but think about what happened to Argel Tal, and he definitely didn't do anything as outrageous as threaten to kill Lorgar! At least the way I see it, Erebus did what he did with the blessing of Lorgar, and Argel Tal was definitely loyal. Someone like Allant would probably not last long when the penalty for doubt was death.

Somehow I don't actually think Lorgar had anything to do with Argel Tal's death. If memory serves me right, Erebus killed him saying that he was poisoning Lorgar's mind, making him soft. So I dont think it was Lorgar's decision and while he did love Argel Tal, he can't touch Erebus because his destiny is essentially written in. If Lorgar was the one who did it, why would he have told Khârn? At the same time though, I can understand it. Just as Lorgar was too cowardly to kill Erebus, I think the same can go for Allant without going too far out of question... That and Allant has the Blessed Lady at his command which can probably be considered cheating, but who's going to stand up to the guy commanding an Abyssal Class warship? :P

Did you think we would forget?... that we are your nightmare, your sin

Did you think we would forget?... that you turned us into monsters?

Did you think we would forget?.... that you cheated us of salvation?

Did you think we would forget?... that we stained our souls for you?

Did you think we would forget?... that you left us to die like dogs?

Did you think we would forget?... that we have come for you?

So,
I blame both Brother Heinrich and Ven for this one, but here he is in
the flesh. Sergeant Mysis of First Claw, Formerly of the Night Lords
16th Company, now Dedicated to the Black Legion of Warmaster Abaddon.
Currently pledged to Arch-fiend Havel 'The Heir' and his warband 'The
Sons Returned' who currently fight alongside the Chapter of the Ruined
King.

Really nice conversion work. I love what you've done with the possessed legs to get that champion pose, and using the whfb knight's horns to decorate terminator armour is a brilliant idea.

Looking forward to seeing some paint on these guys.

So, its been a while since my last update. Been settling down for the
beginning of school and such but I wanted to make sure my entry for
Grotsmasha's competition was complete. So here is 'Captain' Tor Val "The Craven", formerly of the VIII Legion now in service to the Warmaster Horus.

Hail to the Ruined King. Its has been some time, brothers and sisters. But we're back on track and ready to bring yet more faithful into the fold.

So first up, we have three new Word Bearers to bring forward. I'm currently trying to dish out more standard marines at the moment to fill out the army rather than just be working on characters as I usually do.

That's all for now unfortunately. Enjoy.

Hey guys, another update. So a little while back, I received a large assortment of Noise weapons and backpacks from various trades and purchases, giving me ample room to get started on my Slaaneshi contingent to go alongside my Word Bearers. The plan for these guys is to combine weapons with the heads and shoulderpads from the Raptor box which just fit perfectly together. And yes, that is the start of some paint. Still very WIP but he'll be getting the brush soon enough.

Next up we have something I need your help on guys. So this here will be one of my more Senior Noise Champions, equipped with the twin Lightning Claws, as you can see, and he will also have a Doom Siren once I learn a proper way to balance the ridiculous weight of that heavy metal backpack. The problem is, I'm just not sure what to do for his head. Nothing has seem to fit so far....

Any ideas, guys?
