The Ashen Host - a rough outline

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone,

I have an idea for a chapter and would appreciate some feedback. I'll do what I can to answer any questions.

Chapter name: the Ashen Host

Home world: fleet based

Divergence: some divergance

Specialty: special operations/urban warfare

Organization: They rarely encounter a foe that requires the entire chapter to fight as one, so they operate in semi autonomous companies. Each company recruits from suitable worlds they encounter and contains its own scouts and veterans. The companies are not enumerated, they have names, such as the company of the shrouded sun, etc.

Favored tactics:

Ambush

Guerrilla warfare

Lightning raid

They rarely strike the opponent head on until the enemy force is unbalanced and realing.

Congratulations, you've just described just about every marine chapter... A full chapter deployment is the sort of thing that is rare, even for marines, very few will ever experience that sort of thing.

COmpany numbers- they will have a number, even if its rarely used. For example, the grenadier guards regiment has a number, but is known by name instead.

Will try and reply better later, am at work on my mobile...

Well, I suppose the obvious question to ask at this point is; what sort of divergence are we talking about? Does it extend beyond renaming the companies?

Also, do your companies operate very far apart or do they travel fairly close to each other?

Thank you for the responses

They don't have scouting companies, reserve companies, or veteran companies. They are focused on taking the fight to the emperor's enemies. Each company has its own scouts and veterans. They operate in relatively isolated battle fleets. These fleets are coordinated by chapter command and will operate at great distances until they need to combine forces.

So organized along the same lines as my Sons of Pyron.

Who are also organised (very) broadly like my Infinity Knights. I'd bet there are others from before my time that I'm organised like.laugh.png

The point is that there are no original organisations left to use. Or at least, no decent original ones.tongue.png

As has been mentioned, it looks like you've got a tried and true basis here, easy to form a Chapter around. The only questions to arise would show up once you tell us what sort of divergences we're talking about. Other than that, this looks like a recipe for fairly vanilla marines.

*cracks knuckls*

Ok, let's see what we have here. I don't have many answers, mostly questions, but hopefully it will help you consider where to go with what you have in order to flesh out your current ideas....

"Ashen Host" is a decent name (although it does sound somewhat like a Word Bearers warband, but shhhhhhh, I won't tell if you won't), and suggests a 'cleanse and burn/scorched earth' style of warfare.

I see you've indicated their speciality is spec-ops/urban warfare; maybe this is how they start, and pave the way for scorched earth? Maybe they prefer flame & melta-based weaponry?

Do you have particular livery in mind? Might they be more open than most to the use of camo, given their preferences?

Is their a particular reason they are fleet based? Have they always been that way? Did they lose their homeworld? Are they a 'crusading' chapter, but just make war in a different manner to the Black Templars?

Is there a particular reason for this? Is it linked to their preferred method of warfare? Does it suit their fleet-based status better?

Raven Guard successors?
