This thread will be about my Iron Warriors army:

 

The Iron Warriors 27th Grand Company, 'The Siege Machine'

 

 

First up, a bit of background.

 

Many a year ago now, in April 2001, I acquired White Dwarf issue 256. In this issue is Index Astartes: Iron Warriors.

 

I read that article and have adored the Iron Warriors ever since. It would be a few years before I started my Iron Warriors proper, as I didn't have much skill or experience at painting or modelling back then.

 

My first attempt at making some Iron Warriors was probably around 2003/2004. There were 20 Chaos Space Marines, and they weren't up to much. All the models had a thick boltgun metal paint job, blood red lenses and a snakebite leather base, and that's it. No black shoulder pads, no gold trim, no hazard stripes and no basing at all.

 

I eventually sold them, keeping one because I liked the heavy bolter! You'll see him a little later.

 

After more inspiration, namely Storm of Iron, Dead Sky Black Sun, and the 'Will of Iron' White Dwarf articles, as well as some great Iron Warriors threads on the internet, I would begin again around 2005/2006, and I have been slowly working on my Iron Warriors ever since.

 

In those years, my skill and execution has improved a lot, and my models will have some conversions, a bit of sculpting here and there, and a cleaner paint job.

My army will not necessarily be following the official rules, but I don't play anyway.

 

The 27th Grand Company will be similar in composition to a Space Marine battle company, in that it will be built around the main body of 100 Chaos Space Marines.

 

Warsmith Sturm is the commander of the 27th Grand Company, and he has 5 lieutenants under his command; Zaon, Krieger, Atlas, Hauser, and Strausser, as well as his champion Obsidian.

good to see another IW player come to the fore. may i ask Iron Boss, is that an Emperor's Champion you've used as the base model? i did a similar think for a Black Legion lord a (fair) few years ago, and it is a good base as it has a good pose (leg wise) and is relatively easy to convert. i also like the servo-arm - nice touch, i might have to think about something similar for my characters. i also know the WD article you mean, it was part a series 'Index Astartes' and looked at each legion and new rules for them. in that article, you weren't allowed any mark of chaos except for the mark of chaos undivided, apart from a single unit of khorne berzerkers who represented the line breakers, so to speak.

Yes, that is an Emperor's Champion, legs anyway, and a metal one mind you. None of this finecast rubbish. I do rather like the Emperor's Champion model, and have used it quite a few times.

 

The torso is an assault marine torso, with a bit of GS to add some bulk. The Coteaz hammer is metal as well. ;)

Ah, I don't remember that bit. Must be why people kept having Khorne units in their IW armies. :P

The purity seal was too embedded in the model to remove, so I simply painted it red to give it a more sinister look, an 'impurity seal' if you will.

Next up, something I think most of you won't have seen before.

A scratch built Decimator Knight. And I call it a Knight for a good reason. When the GW model came out, I liked it, but for £50+ it's not a very big model... and I wanted it Knight sized.

So I decided to build my own Decimator, at 200% size of the original, so mine will be about 8 inches tall.

I scratch build using cereal box card, and if you know how to use it, it can be a viable material. When I first started scratch building, I used PVA, but this makes card prone to warping and takes ages to dry. I now use super glue and layering to make models strong.

My Decimator will be outfitted with a Butcher Cannon and a Soulburner Petard. I will make the Soulburner Petard using a part from a metal Tiger tank cannon.

I had no intention of buying all the mags, but the first issue came with the cannon, which I thought would make a great Earthshaker cannon, and it cost me only £1! (would have been 50p, but it was a back issue).

The whole thing is too long to be an Earthshaker cannon, so the shorter piece will be the Soulburner Petard, and the longer piece will be an Earthshaker cannon which you will see a little later.

Really? I didn't think there was a hard and fast size... I've read 5" to 8" is about right for 40K. The Decimator is only slightly taller than the Defiler Knights doing the rounds. I think 8" is a good size, but that's just my preference.

It has been a bit delayed, but here it is. My scratch built Decimator is now painted!

My scratch builds are normally a riot of colour, but a lick of paint really brings it all together.

I had to get a new paint or two, because my snakebite leather and my custom gold mix finally dried up after the hot summer here in the UK. I'm still rocking the black flip tops.

Wow that's some excellent scratch built stuff right there !  Lovin' it !

 

I can see how purists, or people who see blue-peter style cardboard mockups as kids stuff, might look down upon such methods, but this right here is working a treat.  That rhino is something else!  I thought at first it was a Titan you were creating instead of the Decimator Knight - I reckon you should try your hand at the titan next time!  You really should setup a guide to 40k for the people who refuse to buy the models or can't afford them.

 

My only comment would be about the silver paint.  My eyes ain't what they used to be, but in some of the pictures it looks like the silver could use a little smoothing out in places.  Also, have you tried any thinned oil washes to create some shadows to bring out the detail?

 

Keep up the good work, can't wait to see more scratch built titans or the like!

A guide is an interesting idea, seeing as plasticard is the predominant material for scratch building, I could teach the ways of cereal box card.

You won't be disappointed on the scratch build front, as I've got a plethora of them coming up for my Iron Warriors. They will include:

A Land Raider.

An entire Basilisk Battery.

Another Knight Titan.

A Warhound Titan.

A Baneblade.

A Stormlord.

A Thunderhawk Gunship.

I think that's the lot! As for the silver, I plan to give my Iron Warriors a good black washing at some point.
