Iron Warriors

Recommended Posts

Hello everyone, This actually my first post on this forum. After a long break from the game I'm coming back to 40k and I decided to start an Iron Warriors army.  My first piece is a Warpsmith.  Over all I am satisfied with how the model turned out except for one area: the chevrons on his axe.  When I first painted them they were fairly smooth but the black stripe were a little shaky because of my hands.  I redid the yellow and everything is much straighter but the yellow is now a bit clumpy from too many layers.  What I am wondering is if there is a way to strip off just the chevron areas and do them over so they are as smooth as the rest of the model.  I have tried using water to soften the paint and even it out as well as white spirit, but it's not enough.  I feel like this one part is the only thing killing this model.

Welcome to B&C! Welcome to Chaos!

Others with more experience will come along soon, but my suggestion for the axe chevrons is to put some flecks of silver on the errant yellow spots and make it look like the axe has been well-used.

Regardless of what path you choose, the Warpsmith looks great overall, especially with the dark blue on the hoses to add another color thumbsup.gif

I look forward to seeing more of your warband, Iron within!

Hi Mad. I wouldn't be too hard on yourself about the chevrons - from the photos they don't look nearly as bad as you're making out! It will be easier to cover a lighter colour (yellow) with the darker (black) if you need to neaten up - but the trick is very little paint on your brush. To be honest, I think if you go over the yellow smudge on the blade bit of the axe it will look fine.

The model is great overall - do you have more planned?

Thanks for the replies! I have a whole army planned, so far on the assembly table is a CSM squad, a Warsmith (Lord), and Chosen.  I'm actually entering this model as a competition piece at my LGS, which is why the messiness of the chevrons bothered me as much.  I used some fine grade sandpaper to strip and smooth that part down and it'll be done again.  After that I'll paint a blue glow on the axe blade to finish the model.

Nice Warpsmith MadHatter.

Exactly what I was thinking. Applying some metal coloured chips to your hazard stripes can help disguise any messiness.

Thank you.

This is my next WIP, a Warsmith (Lord) with combi-melta & Black Mace:

The conversion may have made the Mace arm slightly long, but with it being a bionic arm it doesn't feel too out of place.  Being the Black Mace the weapon itself will be black, but I haven't decided yet what color of glow it should have (since it's not aligned with any particular chaos god).  At the moment I'm leaning to purple, like the chaos plasma weapons from the game Space Marine.  Ideas/thoughts?

A friend asked me if I could paint his Typhus for him, since Nurgle/Death Guard was my old army, while I was at the store tonight, so I sat down and a couple hours later this is how he turned out.

I also have a question about varnish. I've always used Krylon Matte, but the part of the world I live in can have frequent humidity swings and I'm tired of putting up with the "wait a month or so for the climate to stabilize so I can varnish" and even then worrying if the model(s) will fog/discolor. What does everyone else use and is there a sure solution to fogging/discoloring?
