Heresy Salamanders - Salamander Praetor Updated 14/08

Recommended Posts

So I've just ordered the bits to convert my Salamander Praetor, but I have some additional questions regarding both modeling and painting.

1. Any suggestions as to how to paint them, my current marine army is part dark green so I'm thinking of going brighter, what do you think of this tutorial?

2. I'm going to be using green stuff to make some bits of lizard skin, is the best way to do this roll up little balls of green stuff and squash them on some thin green stuff and then use the blunt side of a crafting knife to shape it into scales or is there a better/simpler/quicker way?

3. I want to add a forgeworld Castellax robot to my force, I'm considering painting it the same as the salamanders but over one shoulder have a lizard skin cloak with a big lizard head, what head do you think would be suitable, cold one, carnosaur or something else?

Personally I like the darker shades of green. Totally subjective though.

Sounds about right to me. What you can try to do to speed it up it to make a negative mould of one of your finished bits and use it cast your own or make a texture stamp out of it.

Never had a Castellax in my hand but eyeballing the size, I'd say a cold one head would be about as big as the shoulderpad itself (Have a box of Dark Elf riders here). You could probably get away with using a Lizardman Warrior head. Would kinda look like the wolf pelts on the SW minis sizewise (The FW Dreadnaught has a bigger one though).

I vote for the brighter green (gorgeous result in that tutorial). I've seen Salamanders done in it before, and it is way more visually appealing than grimy dark green. I am prejudiced against bright schemes painted too dark (usually as a result of airbrushing), it just doesn't look nice to me.

My Vulkan turned up today, I'm using him to convert my Salamander Praetor, originally I was going to simply replace the backpack and head with mkIII era pieces but now I'm not sure about the arm carrying the flamer, so I'm thinking of swapping it for something else, but I'm not sure what, any suggestions?

Edit: Maybe I should replace the spear/glaive weapon to, I have a heresy era thunder hammer and power axe available.

Here's the two options I currently have for the right arm, I'd prefer he had a praetor weapon as I'd rather he didn't strike last but it looks to me the thunder hammer fits better.

I have no idea about the loadout ruleswise, as I don't have the FW HH books but I like the hammer better too.

The FW Praetor in PA has this Revolver-like thing. Could probably build something similar with some fantasy bits and some cables.
