Bug Stompers: Scythes of the Emperor (Marines based 2/28)

Sterns and a TFC would be good, especially for bug squashing. It'd be nice to see them painted up in Scythe yellow but good luck assembling the TFC - if you find any secret tips on how to not lose the will to live while building it let me know...

I'm thinking of converting and repainting the T-fire I built for my Pre-HH Thousand Sons, so the construction is already complete (I often hear bad things about it though I really had little trouble with mine. Lucky I guess). I just need to remove some GS Scarabs and replace them with skulls or the like, as well as the repainting.

And thank you very much, Honda. :)

  • 1 month later...

GW Nakano's Spring painting contest is on March 30th and as I mentioned before one of the conditions is that no coversions are allowed. I searched my available models and found something I can inspire myself to make and paint up without converting.

Namely, a genestealer.

I bought a sprue of them for using as basing bitz for my Scythes but figure the bitz pile can survive the loss of one body, leg, head and four arms.

Why am I mentioning it here? Well, I'll be painting up the small tyranid plant/bio-forms that I've made for those five marines' bases at the same time.

I always liked the original purple skin/blue carapace 'stealers, and so am going with that.

Will post photos of the bases soon.

Will of course not be posting images of the 'stealer here. If anyone is interested, I have a thread for it over on the Boot Camp: Here.

What else Scythe-related...

I see FW is releasing a pack of grav guns so I'll be getting those for a biker squad of monster hunters.

I must say the Tyranic Veterans data slate didn't really inspire me.

The Legion of the Damned codex...now that just might. I planned to have a squad representing ghosts of Sotha, but perhaps I this codex will inspire me to go beyond one squad...

Anyway, must focus on the here and now!

Where'd I put that Thunderfire...?

The Veterans slate was a bit of a disappointment, it didn't even add any lore reasons for taking it :( I look forward to seeing some genestealers in their ideal form: chunks of meat on bases! That is definitely within the B&C's rules ;)

Your scythes are looking great fella, I my self looked at the tyrannic war vets as an allied detachment for my crimson fists, but as everyone said it was such a sham.....normal stern guard with Cassius will do me fine.

Do you build your yellow from black?

How big you making your force?

Thank you, Dorn's Fist.

I undercoated the marines white and went from there. I used Yriel Yellow as a base, shaded everything with Casandora Yellow, then Yriel again leaving some areas shaded. Highlighted with Flash Gitz Yellow and -on the good advice of others- put some Gryphone Sepia into panel lines.

When I do get around to doing more, I think I'll try to paint the black parts separate from the yellow, undercoating black and white accordingly.

No plan how big the army will get. Storage space allowing, I want a couple of tactical squads and transports, the ubiquitous sternguard, sniper scouts, Thunderfire, Legion of the Damned and some Terminators (I know the Scythes supposedly don't have any TDA anymore but I want to do some painted up like the old artwork. Perhaps they managed to scavenge it ;)).

That sounds like a great idea fella and I have read that the scythes do actually have 4 suits of TDA 100% working 1 more being repaired.

When I did my scythe and when I do some more I under coated the torso and back pack separately along with masking off the groin area....a pain but much easer in the long run.

Thanks again, Dorn's Fist, and NightHunters.

I finally got the five marines based! Four have some kind of tyranid plant/bioform. Judging by the parched ground, it seems these things are sucking up water and nutrients from the ground. The one on the sergeant's base has been blown open by a bolt shell.

Will take some shots with a proper camera once I get the full ten done.

For the pistol-shooter and other bolter-marine I tried the old RT symbol on their right shoulder pads indicating a bolt gun armed marine (the white and black circular mark you can see here). I tried doing the flamer one but messed it up twice and am not trying that again!

The missile-launcher armed marine's head isn't actually glued in place, so it can rotate a little on it's pin.

And the sergeant.

And next to their ride.

Next up will be either the techmarine and thunderfire, or scout snipers.

Aaand I haven't yet bought the other five members of the squad, but have started work on one's bolter.

He's be going into combat Gangnam Style, Jungle Boogie...ah, that's it: Jungle Style*

Taking photos really shows you what more needs doing: like more filing on the back of that attached mag sad.png

In the grim dark future of the 41st millennium there is only... Duct tape? :p

Only playing... These are an absolute credit to you sir! Beautiful work on the black and yellow. You have balls the size if coconuts to paint two very difficult colours as a chapter, plus model some nifty conversions too!

Ave brother!

Thank you, all.

Yes, Honda, they do look a bit pitcher plant-ish, don't they? Not intentional, but I saw it too when I'd finished them. I was tempted to add some form of tongue/tentacle/stinger snaking out of the 'mouth' but realised that such an immediate threat wouldn't mesh with the marines' poses (engaging targets off-base).

WarriorFish, I was considering filling the three intact griblits (I like it!) with Water Effect to further show their purpose, though I could add some ichor to the wrecked one...

But what colour to do it? Nurgle's Rot would be an easy choice, but since I did the griblits with purple skin and blue carapace (and will do dead 'nids on further bases in a similar scheme) green blood feels wrong. I suppose I could see if Tamiya does a 'clear purple' or pink...or mix up a very pale purple and give it a few gloss coats...

They look very alien to me, what did you make them from? For some reason I've always imagined Tyranid ichor to be purple, not sure why. I think there was a purple GW paint with "ichor" in the name so maybe that's it? Make it nice and glossy and it'd look good for pretty much any colour I reckon :)

Naught but drinking straws and hot glue! The former for the stalk/ribbed bit, the latter for the base and tentacle/ roots.

I might make some clusters of them as area terrain. That way the ones on the marines' bases wouldn't look out of place.

I'll look into something pale and purple then :)

Ah cool, I thought they were straws bit it was hard to tell as you did such a good job on them. Very creative! I agree that some clusters for terrain would be good, you could also do the same for custom objectives too?
