Why are there no female primarchs?

damn, so you're cawkwell? i liked the gildar rift, so more of that if possible.

ok, so 6 hours of sleep, a litre of coffe and a mathematics test later, and i think i'm ready to jump into the fight again.

i agree with pyroriffic that it is good that we don't see primarchs battling around in lingerie and steel-bikinis, the only ones that get away with that is dark eldar, daemonettes and fulgrim(if he fancies).

Well, 40K has managed to avoid that clothing stereotype, so far - apart from the Dark Eldar, as you said, but it's kind of their thing anyway.

Suspension of disbelief might make it possible for a superstrong yet perfectly feminine woman to join the Primarch ranks.

Marvak did have a point back there about today's view on sexism.. Sexism, while not eradicated, shouldn't be blindly measured in male vs female representation. Nor should it ignore timelines.

The root reason for the vast majority of male characters - and Primarchs, specificaly - in 40K is the pattern followed by most legends and stories of heroes. And even with such a well from which to drink from, it came out incredibly well, in this matter.

I am sure that Gee-Dub would tactfully handle the matter of a female primarch's power armour. In fairness, with all the steroids and genetics, they would probably be so masculine in shape that male power armour would be fine on them anyway without any additional curvature required other than for purposes of ceremony.

Actually, that would be better, in my opinion, from a dramatic reveal point of view. These hulking great blokes all in your face with chainswords and bolters and what-not, then one of them rips of the helmet to reveal an obviously female face.

Also, it's the weekend! Hooray!

It is Friday, ma'am. Shenanigans. None of that timezone psykery business, either.

I think the problem with Femarchs isn't GeeDub, but us. The fan art, fanfics, etc would decreaae in quality and increase in quantity hundredsfold.

Wait....

Samus is a chick?!?!

hahah nothing more embarassing to men then having their arse handed to them by women, who then garner their immediate respect (most of the time).

Ms. Cawkwell have you ever considered writing a Legion book? Is there any that you would enjoy writing?

I quite enjoyed the lunacy of your Huron and his nursemaid apothecary. Oh and I absolutely hate you for killing off the Captain with lightning claws, because LCs have a +1 factor :P

I think you would do wonders with characters like ADB and His Holiness Dan Abnett do.

Hey, I for one would love to see Brienne of Caliban! But it does say a lot that Brienne of Tarth is a rare example of a female warrior in fantasy/sci fi.

Eowyn or Ripley as Primarchs could work (And in my opinion, Primarch Ripley would finally justify Centurions).

As for gender bending canon ones...for Guilliman you could snag elements of Athena, who had strategy and tactics as part of her portfolio, and for Lion or the Khan you could use Artemis as a guide (athough that would mean a Primarch specializing in ranged combat instead of heroic melee. I don't think the world is ready for a change that drastic).

Angron...maybe Morrigan, Celtic goddess of war and slaughter? Fem Angron could even still rave about rising up against tyrannical empires, just copy paste Boadacia's background in for Spartacus's and you're done.

Considering how some female bodybuilders look, there may not be an "obviously female face" in that scenario.

Counterpoint:

Gina Carano, Megumi Fujii, Ronda Rousey, and Miesha Tate. All fairly feminine, all professional athletes who hand out large amounts of butt kicking for a living.

Of course, there's also Cris "Cyborg" Santos, IMO the best female fighter out there, who is legitimately scary in that Mike Tyson "I will eat your children" sense.

For all of GW's flaws, I must say I find their treatment of women pretty good. Or at least as good as their treatment of men, which might just be as important.

Even the BDSM addicts in space don't rock breasts the size of their head and all things considered, Lelith excepted, look pretty modest (though my memory may be wrong). Even Lelith, who actually wears a space chainmail bikini, is flat as a plank small-chested and has killer abs. And even though I feel the artwork depicts their power armor as paperthin, the models of the Sororitas are tasteful... save perhaps the repentias.

Compare with Raging Heroes, who have commissars who go to battle in catsuit lingerie with their tits hanging out.

A fun exercise to work out how sexist something is is to go through and genderflip all the characters.

See how the perception of the character dynamics change.

(also, I always read Cain as if he was a woman, just because it fits in my head and makes 'him' someone I can look up to... >>)

Now thats an Imperium I can believe in.

I would not mind taking orders from them. I would almost do heretical things just to get their attention wub.png

So we want a female primarch because of equality, but then everyone's idea of 'Imperium' is an overly sexualized commissar with MK I combat cleavage who is licking her lips provocatively?

This is why boys and girls are different.

Male Gamers: We need strong women characters, cuz girls do stuff too.

*Someone makes a Commissar Jenna Jameson*

Male Gamers: SEE! Look how cool and hot she is! She's got huge tits and a pistol! Everybody loves huge tits and a pistol!

Girl Gamers: *facepalm*

If you really want a fair and equal representation of women, make a model of a homely Commissarette with mediocre chesticles and freckles or something, because only in movies do men and women always look put together. I mean in Battle for Los Angeles Michele Rodriguez had perfect hair after fighting a battle with an ACH on all day, and didn't look like :cuss after walking around in full battle rattle since the fighting began.

Representations of women as created by men, ESPECIALLY for entertainment end up began fantasy instead of reality. My girlfriend can look beautiful, and she can look... well she reads these, so she's always beautiful, but OTHER women can look not so awesome. Just like any guy can clean up, trim up, suit up and look great even with a beer belly and weak chin and he can also look like he's been wearing the same pair of cargo shorts and beer stained band t-shirt for six days.

A convincing female character that is not in some way effected by a male writers projection of a 'boss :cuss :cuss' are few and far between. A D-B writes them well, but even he had to omit the pseudo-sexual Ayn Randian bit about Octavia enjoying piloting a ship in a Skinimax way because he realized what he was doing. GRR Martin has tons of great female characters, but they all suffer from some weird form of Ayn Randian syndrome.

I must have missed the bits in A Song of Fire And Ice where Brienne, Arya, Sansa, Cersei, Dany and Meliasandre spew fifteen page rants about how the parasite people seek to destroy the heroic science-capitalists with their lies of altruism, and our only recourse is to flee to the magical Libertarian utopia.

Or I have the wrong idea about what "Ayn Rand Syndrome" is.
