Spray Primers and Alternatives

Recommended Posts

Im looking for a brand of spray on primer that is rated for use on GW plastic crack and in colour more than just black or white.
I've heard horror stories about spray paints melting models, and thats why I am asking about the rated for safe use.
I am starting to paint Black Templars. I already have Black Primer, but I am looking for white, red and an off black (or very dark grey). The "light black" seems nicer on models because I see it as less harsh and I can get better highlights. I do not have access to a compressor for those who airbrush, and if people have cheap suggestions that work, that'd be perfect!

It really depends where you live in the world. Brits can pop into their local Halfords, Yanks into Walmart etc for spray paints.

Be aware that if you choose Army Painter sprays then the regular paint pots in the same colour won't match for touch ups. I sprayed Dragon Red, and then used it from the bottle to touch up. However, the red came out a very different shade!

I have used the Rustoleum brand for several years now and I am very happy with the results. It is a much better price than the GW primer and it comes in a variety of colors. I even use the basic white or black paint as a base coat with the same satisfaction of results as the primers.

After having gone through three cans on my Blood Angels, I can honestly say this never happened to me.

Pure Red in the can = Pure Red (and GW Blood Red/Evil Sunz Scarlet) in the bottle.

Well, a dark grey is going to be haard to find anywhere if Uniform Grey is to light for you. IF you are using it darker highlights, then there is an alternative of sorts.

Prime in solid black, then hit it with a very light spray of White or Grey to lighten the more raised areas of the model. I've done this trick a few times and it works better IMHO that just solid black or grey. It takes a bit of practice to get just right, but its a good effect, especially if you cant find the right color you are looking for.

As far as the Army Painter Paints go.

I use Army Painter almost exclusively now. I've used the majority of their Sprays and the matching bottle paints, and every single one I have used has  matched perfectly together. My Chaos Marines are all done in Dragon Red, and the bottle matched perfectly to the Spray. If you were getting different results, then you should contact Army Painter about it.

What would you suggest for white? Army painter? Or got another secret?

For white I have a can of NOW SPRAY PAINT, not sure if they sell it in your area or not.  It is the only white I have gotten to work.  Just note that if you do use Krylon, but both their black (or a white if you have one that doesn't run and eat up colors) and the color you want.  Spray a layer of the black first, as it makes better results than just spraying a color right on the plastic. Most people will swear by army painter, but I just refuse to spend that much on a can of primer that last just as long as cheaper alternatives.  The only time I would suggest army painter is for brighter colors than you cannot find a cheaper alternative for, like reds and yellows, because lets face it, army painter is some of the best paint on the market for bases. 12 euro (that's like 14 USD) a can just makes me cringe.

EDIT: The Kyrlon dark grey is extremely rare now, I think they may have stopped making it and only make their light grey now.

I'm in Canada, so I don't know if that's a problem. Pretty sure I've seen both. But any Krylon will work?

Yeah, you can get Krylon spray paints in Wal-Mart here. Well, you can in Ontario. Don't see why you wouldn't be able to elsewhere.

I use the Plasti-Kote White Primer (and Red Oxide on my Blood Angels), no problems at all so far on plastic, resin, metal and Finecast.

Get them in B&Q/Homebase in the UK, probably any DIY store abroad.

++ just seen they do a clear matt acrylic, might give it a try for varnishing
