Old School Crimson Fist blue?

Brothers,

 

Basically I'm after the colours that were used in the Rogue Trader era.

 

Was it nauseating blue or midnight blue or something similar?

 

I might get some Coat D'arms and go old school on my next project.

It's Midnight Blue in the old 3ed Codex. Before that it might have been Moody Blue, but that's from the Citadel painting guide from '89 - can't swear that was the correct colour for Fists though, and they're not in the 1ed Space Marine painting guide.

 

Looking at the Coat D'Arms site I think the 110 Royal Blue looks like the closest match?

Done a couple of test swatches and I'm liking VGC stormy Blue, Altforf guard Blue highlight, and maybe vallejo Blue fluorescent for an extreme highlight.

 

Edit - I've just found a bottle of VGC ultramarine - and it's properly ultramarine Blue - I think I've just found my highlight :-D

I think the colour your looking for is Marine Dark Blue, from the original Citadel range.

Here's a colour swatch with some other dark blues from my paint collection.

From right to left:

Vellejo Stormy Blue, Vallejo Night Blue, Citadel Regal Blue, Citadel Midnight Blue, P3 Exile Blue, Citadel Marine Dark Blue.

For me, Exile Blue is the closest, but Stormy Blue isn't bad either. Midnight Blue is too purple and both Regal and Night Blue are too light. Of course, it depends on what's available to you and how faithfully you want to re-create the RT era scheme.

You might also be able to find similar colours in the Coat'dArms range as they are, I believe, the old 80s Citadel range under a different label. I think it's still the same manufacturer. I'm unsure whether P3 is from the same manufacturer as well, but they feel very like the original Citadel range and come in the same pot. I know they are manufactured in UK (then shipped to the US to distribute, sometimes back to the UK ), as are Coat'dArms/original Citadel range.

Edit: I couldn't find a Moody Blue among my paints, but from some digging around online it's from the same era as Marine Dark Blue, but looks quite a bit lighter than the RT era Crimson Fist scheme to me. Marine Dark Blue was also the dark blue in the Space Marine paint set of that era, although that's not a huge indicator of which works better for the Fists as that paint set was mainly to cover Blood Angels, Ultramarines, Salamanders & Space Wolves.

The moody Blue (allowing for monitor colour issues) looks most like my minds eye version of the colour I'm thinking of.

 

I'll start trying the colours I have today (kids permitting) and see how far I get.

just digging back through old books and pdf copies, the colour varies quite a bit for the Fists
