Which army to paint? You decide.

Recommended Posts

The company I work for has a two week shut down every year at Christmas. So this year on my break I plan to paint a small army. I have two DIYs I've been working on and I can't decide which one to paint first. So I decided to let you the fraters of the B&C have a say.

First the Sons of Creightos. Born of the gene seed of Ferrus Manus in the tenth founding the Sons prefer to assault first and ask questions later.

Second up are the Smilodons or Saber Fangs as they are called by some. I created these guys for the 27th founding project. Their gene heritage has been withheld from them, but they are in fact sons of the Lion. The Smilodons are fleet based and show the tactical acumen and stubbornness their gene line is known for.

So take a look and tell me which chapter you like and let me know. I'll paint models for the chapter with the most votes.

Thanks all.

Not a fan of either scheme, to be honest (not a fan of DIYs).

First founding chapters not float your boat? With the new C:SM coming out, you could do something that people will recognise and appreciate.

If it's Iron Hands successors you're after, there's always the Sons of Medusa.

Also not really a fan of either scheme.

Saber Fangs look better but I'd +1 p34ce's suggestion of Sons of Medusa.

A bit old but these might provide some inspiration if you're set on a DIY scheme https://1-media-cdn.foolz.us/ffuuka/board/tg/image/1357/69/1357696761273.png

The Saber Fang looks cool! Bad picture to make a judgment from though - all I can really see in the way of colour scheme is red and gold. Is there a third colour? My vote would go to the Smilodons. The issue with the Sons of Creightos (cool name) is that the brown you've painted could do with something to make it 'pop' - whether it's increased highlighting, sponge weathering to break it up, or whatever. It also clashes a bit with the black and red. I like the effort though, let us know which you choose :)

Any son of Ferrus is a friend of mine -- go Creightos!  However, is that brown or gold?  If it's gold, might I suggest painting it in layers?  I do mine for my Eldar in three shades, and it comes out looking solid and sparkling.

My preferance to DIYs is that they are "mine" as it were. With first foundings I feel like Im borrowing someone elses brain child.

My painting skills are... Still very much that of a beginner.

The Sons are going to be gold and black. My recipes for both colors need tweaking.

The Saber Fangs are too be a maroon red with gold and some white.

I see where you're coming from when it comes to first founding chapters. There is nothing unoriginal about playing one of the well known chapters. They will still be 'yours', provided you put the effort into unique poses, creative conversions that no one else has, and creative army lists. A huge number of people run DIYs, many of which use similar combinations of red, black and metallics. I've lost count of how many times I've seen poor Pedro Kantor or Vulkan He'Stan caked in red, black and gunmetal.

The established chapters tend to get the balance between colour and simplicity right, because they've been through a reasonable design and evaluation process involving a number of professional artists and designers. Many of the standard chapters are criminally under-represented on the tabletops of the world, even if you'd think otherwise. Crimson Fists, Raven Guard, White Scars, Imperial Fists (yes, really), Ultramarines (yes, really), the list goes on.

For me, as someone who once ran a tacky, badly painted DIY, I learned that there's much more satisfaction to be gained when someone sees your army and thinks "I haven't ever seen a White Scars/Sons of Medusa/Crimson Fists army before!", rather than "What are those supposed to be?".

^ On the flip side there are some amazing DIY efforts on this forum that (in my humble opinion) go above and beyond some of the official Chapters in terms of colour scheme and background. I won't bore/embarrass anyone by listing examples, but I definitely think DIYs are capable of holding their own with officials in terms of overall quality.

Although I do wonder how the new Codex will affect Ultramarines turnouts. I suspect we might be seeing a lot more Blue Boys taking to the field than in previous editions.
