lilMAC25
Look down, look up. I'm written by the author your favored Legions wish they were written by. What's in your hand? Back to me. I have them. It's the lives of those slaves to the Corpse-Emperor you've been wanting. Look again. Those souls have now been corrupted. Anything is possible when your Legion is written by a BL great. I'm on your battle-barge, like Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/278837-how-happy-would-you-be-if-they-reexplained-the-final-battle/page/4/#findComment-3437497 Share on other sites
GhostMalone
I think ADB has a great writing style as he gives the fanatics the justification but doesn't have to belittle another legion or chapter. He maintains from dark without having to annihilate everything around him. Night lords and world eater fans and black Templars all agree that he is amazing yet ultras blood angels and what not dont rage against his books, why? He shows the other legions/chapters dignity and with a realism that the future needs to maintain Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/278837-how-happy-would-you-be-if-they-reexplained-the-final-battle/page/4/#findComment-3437509 Share on other sites
Wade Garrett
ADB understands...look, this is a basic principle of story telling and I'm sure it has some official Studies in World Literature term, but the best way I can describe it is to quote an old timey sportswriter on the subject of contenders in boxing: "You can't become a SOMEBODY by beating up a NOBODY." If you write your antagonists as short sighted morons who have trouble remembering which end of a bolter the hurty things come out of, then your heroes don't exactly look like glorious gods of war when they triumph over them, do they? I was reminded of this principle when I was reading "The Conquest of Gaul" by Julius Caesar. There was a man who made very sure to praise those opposing him, talk up their good qualities and provide numerous examples of their skill at arms and contempt for danger, because by doing so he made the eventual triumph of the Roman armies under his command blaze all the brighter. depthcharge12
I got A D-B writing my Legion. My like has turned to fanaticism and zeal. Hey whoa, just swore I thought you were a black templar player there for a sec Don't be chopping off any parts to your models now, you hear? Just look at Zso Sahaal and his fatal obsession with the Corona Nox. Damn, I wanted to sound smart by mentioning that. But yes, this is something ADB does well. He doesn't need to base his protagonists' successes off of his antagonists' failures. Greyall
I think ADB has a great writing style as he gives the fanatics the justification but doesn't have to belittle another legion or chapter. Night lords and world eater fans and black Templars all agree that he is amazing yet ultras blood angels and what not dont rage against his books, why? He shows the other legions/chapters dignity and with a realism that the future needs to maintain Tell me about it, reading his Night Lords novels is like entering the highway and suddendly finding yourself on a bumpy road driving a shivering frog. I admit, I do have a thing for super-skilled protagonists (come on, Sigismund novel), so you can imagine how it feels when, as soon as the fights start, everyone but Xarl gets a blow to the head and seven bolter rounds. It's awesome, of course, it's realistic, but you read about Mercutian firing for two pages and he gets zero kills. At some point you're antecipating him getting a round to the lower jaw. Eventually he does and you find yourself screaming "But he's been fighting for 10000 yearzzz! golly gee!". Then the shame sets in and it's cool. All those 90's cartoons left me with very bad storytelling habits. Kol Saresk
But Mercutian did break the kneecaps of a Phoenix Lord(well, lady). Not everyone can say that. Ironically, it took several people, from a Legion who do not believe in helping each other, contributing to her injuries in order for her to be beaten. Greyall
Aye, Mercutian gets to be awesome - actually, he stabs her in the leg, preventing her from running at the same speed. The teamwork part is indeed ironic since it happens a lot throughout all the novels. They constantly have each other's backs during battle - then constantly stab each other's backs after them. What I meant is how accurately ADB portrays enemies - the loyalist marines are true equals to the traitors (though not as crafty) and, unlike in other settings, possess no death-wish whatsoever. Then the Genesis Champion shows up and it goes up to 'Remarkable +1' how he remains credible while kicking an entire squad in the derriere. It takes another legend to down him - he basically has no scratches when Xarl shows up. So now you know Space Marine legendary heroes are true. To get back on topic, I'd forgotten about the Siege of Terra mentions in the NL trilogy. Guess that answers my doubt, even if it isn't the entire Legion. I'd still like to see Curze there, since the fluff leaves it open. Kol Saresk
Stabbing can break kneecaps. But yeah, the Night Lords and Alpha Legion are both "Were they there? If they were, why weren't they mentioned in the Index Astartes as being there?" And as usual, it seems A D-B managed to walk neither the high road or the low road, but the one to the left and just punch through with "I never said the Legion was there. Just the Tenth and First Companies. At least."
