Trying to choose the right "white" for Luna Wolves...

Hello, dear forum users. I recently started this hobby after reading first few HH books. I'm trying to paint my miniatures in Luna Wolves legion color scheme, but what makes me confused is that there are some different kind of white paints.... like, Flat White, Off White, White, Pearl White... I'm pretty sure that in the book the LW legion color is pure "pearl white," but I'm not sure this color would work well on the miniature (never seen one in google image search).

Well, can you help me choose the right "white?" Color comparison, or description for each "whites" would be awesome.....

If there are fellow LW players, your advices on painting LW white would be much appreciated/helpful.

Thank you.

Not a Luna Wolf player, but I do now my paints. So a flat white is generally the effect you get from primer white, that is it's a no gloss color with limited depth. Off white tends to white with a small amount yellow tint to it giving it a warmth. Pearl white, real pearl white, is a three stage color with a base coat, a tinted white that skews towards faint yellow/green and has metallic flecks in the pant to catch the light, topped off by a deep clear coat. I too have yet to see anyone do a peal on a miniature. I think mostly because the effect is lost in such small and detailed figures.

My advice is find a good primer, I prefer Duplicolor Sandable White Primer, but working up from a gray may actually look better since it'll give you some depth when worked up to white. Mostly it comes down to if you want a warm or cool white for your LW. That will decide the sort of washes you'll want to use in recesses, yellows and greens for warm, blues and purples for cool.

Good luck!

I'd say the colour of the Star Phantoms chapter is a good match for LW.

What it looks like is a mix of pure white, a small amount of bone, and a little medium grey. You're right about pure white not looking right, and it's also hard to paint evenly. If you're not comfortable mixing paint, pure white is probably as good as you'll get.

As NovemberIX says, working up from a medium grey base will probably get you better results either way, because it will modulate the colour very slightly and make shading easier.

Prime; grey or white, or preferably grey with white zenith technique to pre-shade yes.gif

Base; Ulthuan grey

Highlight; Scar white

Shade; Stormvermin fur

Chipping; Skavenblight dinge

My tuppence.

Edit: you can check out Lil'Loser's blogspot too for some awesome Luna action.
