The Power of the Ecclesiarchy

Recommended Posts

Hi guys long time no see whistlingW.gif , I guess the curse of the Purifiers really does exist. As I'm slowly rebuilding the Purifiers from the ground up I've run into a mechanical problem with my background. During the Age of Apostasy the chapter goes on a rampage across a number of Ecclesiarch worlds in retaliation for one of the numerous genocides committed during the reign of blood.

I intend to use this as a turning point that puts the chapter at odds with a few of the high lords of terra, specifically the Ecclesiarchy. I figure that with the massive Imperial casualties caused by the Purifiers there could be problems with many of the imperial institutions. However, I'm unsure how exactly they would go about engineering the destruction of the chapter.

Do they declare the chapter wanting? Do they use the Sisters of Battle? Manipulate them against another Astartes chapter?

What do you guys think the most believable way the Ecclesiarchy would strike back at a Space marine chapter they hate?

Roll them into Codex: Space Marines with all of the lesser Chapters. msn-wink.gif

Do you intend for your Chapter to have fought against the Eclessiarchy during the reign of Goge Vandire, or after his death? If your timeframe is during his reign, then the forces sent against the Chapter would most likely have been the Brides with Frateris Militia and Frateris Templars. If your timeframe is after his death, then the forces would likely have been fanatical surviving Frateris Militia and Frateris Templars (the Brides having seen through his subterfuge and being responsible for his execution).

The Space Marine Chapters largely kept to themselves during this period, except for the four Chapters known to have sided with the Adeptus Mechanicus in finally bringing the Age of Apostasy to a close (Imperial Fists, Black Templars, Soul Drinkers, and Fire Hawks). There may have been some Chapters whose loyalty to the Eclessiarchy may have seen them facing off against other Chapters, but these haven't been identified by name. Such Chapters are viable options for you, though the Brides are the more likely power armoured culprit (in my opinion).

The idea was to that near the beginning of the reign of blood the chapter witnessed one of the purges by the Frateris Templars and started razing every Eclessiarch institution they could find. Eventually that leads to them being saved by the Black Templars after they get in over their heads. However, after being pardoned by Sebastian Thor there remains hatred for the chapter in the halls of terra, and at sometime after the the Reign of Blood the Eclessiarchy with support from other members of the Imperial bureaucracy and possibly the Inquisition move against the chapter possibly covertly.

BTW the idea of fighting a chapter that sided with Vandire could add an interesting dimension, thanks for that idea.

I imagine that, given the chaos surrounding the age of Apostasy, much of what the Chapter did may have gone unnoticed by the wider galaxy. However, if they were to clash with a pro-Vandire Astartes Chapter... no-one holds a grudge quite like a functionally immortal post-human superman...
As I understand it, the Ecclesiarchy was almost entirely reformed after Vandire's death, which means a complete change in leadership. Anyone who cared (and was in a position to do anything) about the Chapter's actions during the Reign of Blood was dead or in Inquisitorial custody (so, dead) after the defeat of Vandire.
However, maybe a particularly zealous Inquisitor, maybe with links to Redmptionist cults or senior members of the new Ecclesiarchy, witnessed the Chapter's massacres, and has set out to have them brought to justice.
Hope this helps.

They'd probably be safe as the Astartes and Ecclesiarchy have a live and let live policy mainly due to differences in worship of the God-Emperor. However if a particularly militant branch with links to the Inquisition was determined to cause them grief they could meet a fate similar to the Celestial Lions Chapter, see here: http://wh40k.lexicanum.com/wiki/Celestial_Lions#.Uh-TkT9lgys . Hope this helps.
