Plague of the Rat - Space Skaven

Arkham Joker

Recommended Posts

Ok guys, a little bit of backstory first of all.  I first started 40k etc back when I was in my early teens living in London for a few years.  From there I developed enjoyment out of friendly games with mates (I have never entered a comp, nor am I likely to with my skills).  I've always loved 40k over fantasy, but I've been in love with the Skaven for a long time.  Back when I was playing a lot my army was a range of chaos space marines with skaven heads and tails (I've never claimed to be a great painter nor converter) painted in all their black undercoated finest.

So... then life got in the way.  I hadn't played in close to a decade when I was around at a mate's place and saw him painting up the models from the Dark Vengeance boxed set.  He'd never played (but like me was into the computer games and the novels) so I organised a game to see how he liked it.  We've had a second since then and I've started doing the unthinkable and actually painting my army.

Thus, the reason for this thread.  Hopefully it will get me motivated to finish what I've started.

My army is pretty much (fluff wise) based on Fabius Bile.  I decided that it was due to his experiments that had mutated a lot of the chaos guys into power armoured rats.  So, Fabius and Abaddon (I figured Fabius would have no chance turning Abaddon into a rat) will be the only "straight" chaos marines in the army.  Everyone else will at least have the signature rat heads and tails.

My army so far...

I have models for Abaddon, Fabius and Khârn.  Lucius and Typhus are hopefully on their way to me.

2 squads of normal marines

havocs

berserkers

1 squad of warp talons

rhino

predator

defiler

hellbrute

obliterators I'm working on

mutilators

daemon prince

terminators

I'm currently working on a painting scheme similar to the old Black Legion warbands idea.  So there will be a consistent green throughout the army, but each type of unit will have different colouring (mainly so I can try things out!)

Anyway, thanks for looking.  I'll upload some photos in the next day or so.  Please remember like I said: horrible painter and no idea about conversions.  So bear with me, and any advice is taken with much thanks.  I just love the rats :)

Ok, was going to leave it at that and try and take some decent pictures tomorrow and work out the best way of uploading them, but thought I should give an idea about what I'm working with.

These are a couple of the first guys I did.  I liked the grey years ago when I did them, but have decided something a bit more colourful is the way to go.  Again originally the idea was to have different coloured warpstone on the bases, but unfortunately the company I got them from ceased trading a number of years ago and I haven't found anything like it.

More pics to come tomorrow!

I have had very similar Idea (upon which my Space Rats warband is based) however I liked the CSM heads too much when I started with Chaos and only my warbands warlord has a skaven head (on my avatar picture). What remained of the skaven fluff is use of warpstone in weapons (eg: green power weapons, plasmaguns, flamers, meltas and all "powered" things). My warlord usually leads from the back and so on.

Wow. What can I say but wow. Thank you so much guys! The cynic in me is saying it's because you haven't seen much yet and don't know the extent of my beginerisms but hopefully you can give me some not too complicated pointers to help me out.

So... I promised photos. So undercoated glory of the models here. I will be updating as I go, because the point of this WIP is to get me motivated to actually finish them smile.png

Point of reply first... Helldrake is coming. Should arrive next week (as well as a Vindicator) but I currently have no idea how to make it Skaveny. I am also desperate to do something with the Screaming Bell model as I LOVE it, but not sure on dimensions etc so no idea what to put it on.

Ok, models (very basic I know)

And painted models:

Original squad... not keen on the colours anymore

I'm thinking something more along this (I like the greens :))

http://imageshack.us/a/img24/3168/y5mn.jpg

Fabius Bile (reason for the army)

http://imageshack.us/a/img94/2345/t986.jpg

Beserker (not sold on this.  Red gives me a hard time)
http://imageshack.us/a/img834/563/nkxa.jpg

Warp Talons (when I made these guys they were possessed with talons.  Now Warp Talons are an actual thing.  I know there's no jump packs but I'm figuring they can burrow...)

Advice welcomed!  And thanks for looking at my meager work!

This is actually a really awesome concept. I'm actually surprised I haven't seen this idea played out before. My only real qualm with it is how the heads sit on the bodies, they sit too low into the chest, almost as if they don't fit into the armor. Id suggest using some green stuff to build a neck, so the head sits more squarely. If you don't have GS, then even taking a chunk of sprue and shaving the sides to round it could help raise it up a notch. Not enough to make it look obvious that its a piece of sprue, but to help raise the rat head to look more straight forward.
