FranklS04
I have just started to play the game again. The last time I played was the 3rd edition. After buying a few codex's I have decided on the Wolves. I do not play competitively but like a fluffy well themed army. can anybody help me with a 1000pt army list with the following rule - no Vehicles allowed Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/279184-beginner-help-needed/ Share on other sites
Mr.selfdestruct
Lucky you coming in at a time when vehicles are not as prevalent as they once were! I hate to say that anything is an auto-include but Long Fangs pretty much are, and if you are in fact a fluffy player like me you'd try to tell a story with your force. I'm a big fan of the old rule that there are always more blood claws than grey hunters and more grey hunters than long fangs to represent the battlefield attrition. Squark
While I disagree with that sentiment (The larger number of Grey hunters packs means they outnumber the Blood Claws, and there are situations where the recklessness of our Initiates means they're better deployed elsewhere), if you must run them, this is probably what you're going to want. HQ: Wolf Priest -125 points -Runic Armor, Melta bombs Rune Priest -125 points -Terminator Armor, Melta Bombs -Jaws of the World Wolf, Storm Caller Troops: 15 Blood Claws -225 points -2 flamers 15 Blood Claws -225 points -2 Flamers 10 Grey Hunters -160 -2 Plasmaguns Heavy Support: 6 Long Fangs -140 points -5 Missile Launchers Total: 1000 points If you're willing to forgo running Blood Claws (2 units of 15 is pretty much the minimum number for them, though), or take a pack of Skyclaws or Swiftclaw Bikers instead, you've got a bit more freedom with the list. skawolf
If you are wanting to play non-vehicular and fluffy I would say take 15 man squads of blood claws and Long fangs.... Obviously you are going to want to throw in some Grey hunters as well. Do drop pods and dreadnoughts count as vehicles in your parameters? Deathscream
Fun army's??!! Fluffy armies??!! Sounds great!!!! Here is what I would run at 1K if I wanted to play a well rounded list: Wolf Priest Power Armor Combi-Plasma Saga of the Hunter He rides with the- Blood Claw Pack (15) -2x Plasma Gun -Plasma Pistol -Power Axe Rune Priest -Power Armor -Runic (enter you weapon of choice here) -Codex Powers -Warlord He rides with the- Long Fang Pack (6) -5x Missile Launcher -Bolt Pistol/Close Combat weapon on the Leader Grey Hunter Pack (10) -Melta Gun -Plasma Gun (freebie) -Power Axe -Wolf Standard Grey Hunter Pack (10) -Melta Gun -Plasma Gun (freebie) -Power Axe -Wolf Standard This leaves you 15 points for up grades. You could get some Melta Bombs or Mark of the Wulfen one of your Grey Hunters... For a highly stylized army that is NOT at all competitive I play: Canis Wolfborn Wolf Guard Battle Leader -Runic Armor -Power Fist -Storm Shield -Thunder Wolf Mount -Warlord Fenrisian Wolf Pack (15) Fenrisian Wolf Pack (15) Fenrisian Wolf Pack (15) Thunder Wolf Cavalry (4) -Storm Shield / Close Combat Weapon -Storm Shield / Close Combat Weapon -Bolt Pistol / Close Combat Weapon -Bolt Pistol / Close Combat Weapon Just a couple of ideas for you to go off of. I am also a HUGE fan of using Logan Grimnar to make Wolf Guard into troops, giving them all terminator armor and kitting them out as you like. The nice thing about the wolf guard is that they are highly customizable. This idea however is a bad one at 1000 points as your HQ takes up over 1/4th of your points total. Good luck brother!! FranklS04
Thank you all for your help. I was thinking of sky claws rather then blood claws for the added mobility then lots and lots of grey hunters Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/279184-beginner-help-needed/#findComment-3441590 Share on other sites
Castellan Michael
Don't over look the value a pack of long fangs give you, especially with a rune priest. Brother Crazywolf
A rune priest helps with the long fangs when using the brb powers like divination. Can't help much more than that. The brb inst on hand at the moment. Personally prefer to use the codex powers. Squark
Rune Priests are, generally speaking, our best force multiplier (Unless you're allied with guard, in which case a Wolf Priest in a guard blob arguably edges out. Guard Blobs do not need Fearless, Stealth, and Preferred Enemy). Divination ensures that most of the Long Fangs hit, or Living Lightning can give them some extra firepower against light tanks. If you're thinking Skyclaws, though, here's what I might try. HQ: Rune Priest or Wolf Priest -160 points -Jump Pack, Runic Armor, Wolftooth Necklace, Melta Bombs --Rune Priest gets Jaws of the World Wolf and Storm Caller Troops: 10 Grey Hunters -170 points -2 Plasmaguns, Wolf Standard 10 Grey Hunters -170 points -2 Plasmaguns, Wolf Standard 10 Grey Hunters -160 points -2 Flamers, Wolf Standard (Objective squatters) Fast Attack: 10 Skyclaws -200 points -Flamer, Mark of the Wulfen Heavy Support: 6 Long Fangs -140 points -5 Missile Launchers Total: 1000 points. Alternatively, cut the wolftooth necklace and the standard on the flamer Grey Hunters, and add a power axe to the Skyclaws pack. Frater Cornelius
Here's my last 1k SW army, stomped a necros force. HQ Rune Priest - 100 Living Lightning, Jaws of the World Wolf Troops 10 Gray Hunters - 215 2 Meltas, Wolf Standard, Mark of the Wolfen Rhino with Dozerblade 10 Gray Hunters - 215 2 Meltas, Wolf Standard, Mark of the Wolfen Rhino with Dozerblade 5 Gray Hunters - 75 1 Flamer Rhino with Dozerblade Rune Priest will be joining and peeking out of top hatch Fast Attack 3 Thunderwolf Cavalry - 210 2 Stormshields Heavy Support Predator - 85 Autocanon, Heavy Bolter Sponson Predator - 85 Autocanon, Heavy Bolter Sponson In hindsight, I think the TWC were a bit risky, but they did pull their weight. In general, think like this: boys over toys. Many SW units can get very expensive very fast. Since you are doing no vehicles, take away the Rhinos and exchange the Meltas for Plasmas if you are doing to face Marines, otherwise try flamer spam. Also exchange Predators for Long Fangs. For 130? points you get 5 rockets, not bad at all. Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/279184-beginner-help-needed/#findComment-3442672 Share on other sites
Castellan Michael
Rune priests are great for buffing with divination from the BRB...I tend to float between the buffing vs using codex powers dependent upon who I am facing.
