Ultramarine Plog

Hi. I have decided to try 40k after getting the DV set 6 months ago. I have played wfb and started to learn the rules and play a couple of games. For me however half the fun of the hobby has to be the painting etc. I started on DA and very quickly did not like the style of them. As a result I went back to wfb and did and empire army.

I keep looking at the 40k games at the club and want to give it another go. I still wanted to start with amrines as they seem to have a bit of everything and a good army to learn with. I went for a basic codex marine force and have decide on Ultramarines. Now the other night I came in for some stick about this?! Seems a lot of Ultramarine hate out there!.

So far I have managed a rhino and five marines. They are missing a little finishing detail at the moment. I tried transfers but could not get the "u" to sit right? Do people use transfers now? I got a batch of second hand premade marines so have had to make the best of these models.

Any idea for improvments? What about the transfers? Am help would be much appriciated

Ultramarines have been hated for years, mostly for no good reason. 40K's creator, Rick Priestley, decided the Ultramarines were the best (somebody had to be I guess), and that hurt some feelings. Then, because the Ultramarines were just big guys in big armor with big guns, they became the poster boys for 40K since they didn't didn't need any extra explanation as to why they have hoodie bathrobes, or fangs, or fur. Then Mat Ward wrote a codex about the Ultramarines which hurt more feelings.

Basically, Ultramarines became the whipping boy for GW player angst, all because GW didn't choose their favorite color of Space Marine to be the best.

Most model kits (such as Tactical squads) get transfers in them, so as you buy stuff, you should be able to gather enough for your army. I'm no expert at using transfers, but I'm sure another Frater will be along shortly to offer advice in that regard smile.png

The new Codex is about a week or so away from being released, so that might give you additional inspiration for collecting Ultramarines (or their successors).

One thing I'd like to add - that Rhino is one of the original ones from around 20 years ago! (I know as I used to have 3, but they were sold a long time ago sad.png ), so you might want to keep hold of that happy.png

In any case, don't ever let the attitudes and opinions of others stop you from collecting whatever army you want. My army (Rainbow Warriors) has often attracted derision and sarcastic comments from many (not from here, but there are those out there who will try to pick on you regardless of which army you collect dry.png ), so collect what you want.

It's your hobby, your money that's paying for it, so let others think what they want. As long as you're happy, then you don't need to justify it to anyone smile.png

(tl:dr - have fun! The most important part of ANY hobby!)

Ultramarine hate comes from a lot of different sources.  There's some good reason to be annoyed with them, and occasionally even upset, but for the most part Ultrahate you see online is just the typical internet-rage nonsense.  At any rate, don't trouble yourself with it.

As for the models, the first thing that pops out at me is the trim on the shoulderpads.  You need to shave down those clipper marks to a smooth surface before painting, just like mold lines.  The piping on the chest of the bareheaded guy, most people would paint that a different color than the armor.  Typically metallic.  You can always go back and thin highlights using the previous shade of color, like using the darker base blue to thin and sharpen the wider highlights on some of the shoulderpads.

There are indeed some classic bits here- the wide bolter with the wire stock is a classic 2nd Edition bolter, the backpack on the bareheaded guy is 2nd Edition, and the rhino is one of those god awful abominations I hated so much as a kid.  Actually I think the marine with the classic bolter and knife on his shin may even be one of the old snap-togethers.

Nice start, and I love those bases, but the OSL eye glow needs a little work.

As for hate? Well, they're the XIII Legion, so they're obviously unlucky. They're Ultramarines, but their armor isn't ultramarine blue.

Cheers for the comments.

Did get the impression they were not cool enough for some peoples liking! Not emo enough I guess

The eyes havent come out how I wanted them..any advice on improving them?

Ill try the transfers again. Got them on fine but any flat to round surface like that will always raise a little on one side and I hated that! Maybe a slit cut down the gap.in the u.

Now I need to grasp the rules!

Added some weathering near the feet and markings. Think they need some chips etc on them?
