Fast Yellow Marines

After a small discussion with Kastor Krieg in the BT subforum about painting yellow on Imperial Fists i needed to this small tutorial how i paint yellow.

First of all i used an Airbrush to speed it up and get some smooth transition to the highlights.

Step One:

The Marine was primed black with GW Chaos Black from the can.

Step Two:

I set the highlights with some white on the black primer.

The white you use is secondary and just needs to work with the airbrush.

Step Three:

Now the Marine was covered all over with GW Balor Brown.

I use that one cause its a nice bright brown which doesnt darken the yellow to much.

You should still see the highlights to the brown.

Step Four:

Now its time for the yellow. I used GW Yriel Yellow just cause i like it. Its my favorite yellow but you can use whatever yellow u want the effect is the same.

Step Five:

You should still see the highlights though the yellow, but i would recommend another step to intensify the highlights.

I mixed some transparent white with Yriel Yellow and did some new highlights.

Technically the yellow base is finished and ready for some black lining and detail stuff to finish the model for the game.

But you can still do some steps to improve it.

If you want to know, what i would feel free to ask and i will continue with this tut, but now i stop, cause i am short with time and this is at the moment all i wanted to show Kastor.

For those without an airbrush you can still layer this but its more time consuming, thats why i love my airbrush.

Thank you man, nice to hear.

In my taste the yellow is a bit to bright.

To improve the miniature i would suggest doing some chipping with a sponge and some dark gray or brown for some battle damage.

But after talking to a friend of mine who is more into painting miniatures i got some really nice tip to improve the yellow Marine.

I used the Marine in the pics of the first post and worked on him.

First Step

Get some Varnish on that Marine to protect the yellow. Its necessary cause the next Steps would damage the yellow layers.

Second Step

You need some artist oil paint and White Spirit. For the color, i used Burnt Umber much to my taste and more to my limited oil color palette.

Thin the oil paint with White Spirit until u have a nice wash much like the GW Washes.

Get a layer on the Marine, you dont need to be really careful just that the whole mini is coated.

Third Step

Get some Q Tips and some clean White Spirit.

Dip the Q Tips into the White Spirit and start to clean the Marine. Remove all of the oil paint you dont want.

Now the yellow appears a bit darker but u dont need much detailwork or black lining on most of the details.
