Brainstorming: Warband Name

The Story so far:

I set out on a journey to create a faction/group in the WH40k universe. One that mirrors my liking anyway.

Obviously that involves the SW Codex, but less wolfing all the wolfs you can wolf and more Vikings and Heavy Metal!

Currently I am converting dozens of models at a time and soon start painting the pride of my army, my Huntmaster (Redmaw equivalent).

However, even though many characters and units are already named, I am still at a loss of a name of this warband. Something that is actually representative.

Here's some bits of the back story for your imagination to get going:

So, there was this planet, found my IF and, since this bit of space was plagued by xenos incursions, they immediately send word to Terra. It was close to a founding (working on timeline) so they pumped out another generic Chapter.

However, the unexpected part was that the people of this planet were EXTREMELY headstrong and the indoctrination did not show all the effects it should have.

BTW, the people of that planet? Mainly sailors and raiders. Anyway, time went by and they developed their own chapter culture with raiding style combat, ship to ship experts and disregard for conventional tactics. Eventually they did something that got them excommunicate traitoris.

The planet went boom and last remnants of the chapter fleet ended up in the Halo zone. So they found new planet, more details, and settled in. They refuse to join chaos and got kicked out of the Imperium, so they are hiding out and fight on all front as good as possible, pro humanity, anti.. the rest.

In the end, they became hardcore vikings with Termiantors being Einherjar, also have units called Bersekr, ride on dragons and horses, their fleet consists of long ship/dragonboat styled vessels. They wear fur, a lot of it.

They do not have apothecaries, instead brewmasters who make combat drugs, tonics and damn good drinks in the brewery at home. Instead of Chaplains we have Bards who got some cool songs for the battle. They do not have battle cries but instead they sing their songs of battle (some epic nordic chants, skyrim main theme/Heidevolk style).

Oh yeah, and they have their two most important manuscripts, one book (don't have a name yet) that contains all legends and songs sung to this day (based on real world Carmina Burana) and the Bestiarium, a nice book that lists all the different beasts encountered them, their significance, how to use or tame them and what totems can be made of them and what for.

Okay! Here's a small fraction of what makes my warband. Need a name for that mess. I had many attempts like Tidal Reavers, Anarchy Raiders, Ravagers of the <insert something here>, Reikland Hunters and some more, but I do not thing that any of those really nail it. My top contenders are Reikland Hunter/Raiders, but Reikland is a placeholder for the new planets name. Well, I guess something with Raiders will do nicely..

Are you looking for a norse sounding name for your warband? If you are have a look through this and see if anything takes your fancey.

Alternatively you could go with something like The Ravagers or the name of the leader of your warband followed by raiders e.g. Andhrimnir's Raiders.

Hope that helps.

Well. If you don't have apothecaries, you can't implant or retrieve geneseeds and therefore can't get any new recruits. Leaving this vital job in the hands of barkeepers isn't exactly a winning formula!sweat.gif

That said, there is absolutely no reason why the job of barkeeper or drinks guy or whatever has to overwrite the role of an apothecary, so you can easily have both. Happy days!teehee.gif

As for names, I have no idea. You've given us very little character in the above extract to base a name off of, short of 'like space wolves, hold the wolves'. ermm.gif

'Space Vikings' as a name is a bit on the silly side, but as Icewolf says, the [ADJECTIVE] Raiders or Raiders of [NEW HOMEWORLD/CHAPTER LEADER] could work pretty well.turned.gif

Well, I suppose you have a point, but squirting out the whole story here will take ages and will turn this thread into the actual IA. But hell, I suppose I am compensating because I am a little disappointed in the massive emphasis on wolves with the SW and seeing my massive interest in nordic culture and mythology, I wanted it done justice. But no worries, space vikings is the premise, not the core of the matter.

As for the gene-seed thingy, don't worry, they can do it. They are just not called apothecaries and have an expanded field of duties, amongst which are drug, tonics and oversight of the brewery, they are not actually doing the stuff themselves, they got artisans and brewers for that^^

Ah? Fair enough then. Just making sure you weren't accidentally taking the ability to recruit away from your warband.teehee.gif

Those models you've got are pretty awesome, by the way.

I honestly can't come up with anything better for a name than using [sOMETHING] Raiders, but if I think of anything awesome I'll be back on this thread and posting as fast as possible.biggrin.png

The Jötnar

This gets my vote. Norse and yet keeps the suspension of disbelief.

Icewolf

Yeah, I've been thinking of bringing the Jötunn into this somehow, after all, they are 8ft tall, no? Good call there.

Should I go down that route, I will need to think a way to name the actual giants on that world though, not that much of a problem though.

@ Icewolf: I had a look through that dictionary you gave me. So much awesomeness in one link biggrin.png

Had plenty of ideas for names. For example, called my Huntmaster Valdyr (one of the words for 'Wolf'), sounds awesome and, well, he does turn into a giant axe wielding wolf after all. Besides, it's a nice and subtle hint... I am looking at you Canis Wolfborn Oo

No problem glad I could help.
