Pre Heresy Dark Angel (Feed Back/ideas appreciated)

Heya guys, as part of the ongoing project, here is my take on a pre Heresy Dark Angel, I've taken inspiration from 2nd ed, combat cards, the HH books etc. to add a bit more interest to an essentially black model, I'm not entirely happy with it, but it will occupy the slot for my Dark Angel until I have further inspiration ;p

I'm thinking a bit of weathering might help? - That and I think a beakie would look better ;p

Any ideas appreciated!

Cheers for the feedback, I'm trying to stick to 2nd ed mini's in general (as much as possible) - just for my own nostalgia!

The red dots, were supposed to be armour studs, however, the colour scheme (and the fact I think I went over the top with them) makes them look too big...

I don't think red is a good colour for the studs. At all. There's no reason a marine would want to paint them any other colour than the rest of the armour, unless he wanted to look like a Nurgle dalek. wink.png

I love all the heraldry though, and it does evoke that period of 40k in the early/mid nineties. Bonus points if that's authentic goblin green on the base.

The red studs like on pre-heresy art of the actual DARK dark angels actually looks great, just not on 2E models as they had huge knobs rather than little studs. I'd probably just leave them black with future models done in this style.

THAT SAID, holy sweet moley the shoulder work. Killer job on the insignias, man.

Cheers for the feedback guys! the studs are black now, enough? or lose the helmet as well?

Hi guys, after general feedback, I've repainted the studs black, better now do you think?

Well, I played around with red studs for the whole armour (it was a Mk5) but it looked like the marine had the pox or something... So this is a case where less is more imo. I just used them on the shoulder pads and let the rest to stand out in gun metal. A better (and definately more sombre) result...

On the other hand the studs in the mini above are quite big, so maybe it'll be worth it to keep them even more subdued - like black with some highlighting.

My 2c..

Ninja'ed by the OP!

I would paint the helmet black too, at the moment the gold distracts rather than adds to the mdoel.

Just like Captain Semper, I have always painted studs in gunmetal, but these look good in black. You could try some in metal to see what it looked like if you wanted.

I liek the free-hand - it looks very good. I would be inclined to paint over the hazard stripes on the marine's right leg though. You could try a warmer yellow on future minis too as the shade you have looks a little pale in contrast to the black. A nice technique for highlighting black is to use metallics as it doubles as battle damage. That might work here too. Brother Argos did some nice Iron Hands that way a while back, although the pictures unfortunately appear to have gone AWOL. Here's the link in any case:

Hey I love the personal heraldry and the overall look.

However I don't like the gold helmet nor do I like the studs on it I'm afraid. I think you need to have a look at old GW models to see where the studs should go. As it is I think yours look a bit misplaced/too contrived/not 'right' (can't make my mind up which sweat.gif ).

Not that I want to but you off this project - because the idea is a good one and the painting quality is awesome sauce :tu:.

Cheers

You know you could make them a successor chapter...

If that were the case the gold helmet and the studs might not be out of place at all.  If you went this way you could add some gold to the shoulder pad trim too. I also think your Winged Sword is just different enough to pass as it's own chapter symbol. Maybe you could have a successor chapter of psychicly arrested marines led by Librarians. Don't worry if that sounds a bit out there, there was a whole chapter that was possessed and exorcised and they don't even have special rules. Besides, this is 40K!

About the studs, the ones on the legs look fine and I would add two more on the inner and outer leg at the same height as the front stud. The studs on the shoulder pad are also fine as far as size, they are just placed differently than GW commonly has them.

Now what I want to know is, are these studs the glass bead types and where do I get some?
