My Angels of Absolution

I finally got around to building a light box so I could get some photos of my models. My painting doesn't hold up that well in high resolution, but they look OK from a distance (if you squint a bit). Oh and yes I know they need basing, I'll get to it eventually!

The tactical squad were the first batch I did, primarily as test models (the army is going to be Ravenwing).

The sergeant has a magnetic left arm and right hand. I did some custom transfers (you can just see the chapter logo on his left pad). These guys are from the fifth company, which I have chosen to represent with a numeral transfer on the knee-pad, mostly because I can't freehand those shield markings!

I bought some forge world MKIII (and IV) armour on impulse and didn't know what to do with it. I thought the MkIII would look cool with a heavy weapon. He'll probably never get fielded but I like how he turned out. The others are earmarked to be Sternguard and Honour Guard for my Crimson Fists.

The bike squad was the second batch I painted. The attack bike heavy weapon is magnetic but the special weapons are fixed (I had one of the old metal guys from way back).

The biker sergeant's right hand is also magnetic, so far he's only got a pistol and combi plasma painted, I'm trying to figure something out with a melta bomb. I hope you can see a significant step forward vs the first batch, I think I'm getting better!

As you can see I retained the Ravenwing Iconography for these guys, I haven't come up with a name yet but I felt the colour reverse worked nicely. The chapter logo is on the right pad for the bikers, I mirrored it so the wings are trailing behind them. There are also a few Dark Angels logos that pop up in places (e.g. the fairing). I chose to leave them in as a subtle nod to the idea that the Angels of Absolution still defer to the Dark Angel's orders and the Unforgiven act like a Legion in disguise.

The land speeder is the latest thing I've painted, it's not quite finished (needs the gunner) but as you can see it is fully magnetised. I was really happy with how this turned out but the camera makes it look a bit rough sad.png.

I've also got a Chaplain and Librarian painted up but their pictures came out blurry (still getting the hang of miniature photography), so you'll have to wait and see. The next thing I am going to paint will be a second bike squad with plasma guns (three from the Dark Vengeance box, three standard bikes).

For squad markings I think I might do the trim on the mudguard and left shoulder pad in black, the third squad would then be black with a white trim and the fourth all black. I can't do the right pad this way because I can only print my transfers in black so they need a light background to work.

For the Black Knights I plan to have black feathers with a bone trim on the fairing and banner poles, the reverse of the regular guys. I'm not sure about Deathwing yet, I am tempted to paint them black (to do a complete reversal of the Dark Angels schemes), but I think I'll leave them bone so I can use the transfers.

Well, C:DA does recommend that all of the Successor Chapters use the same scheme across the army, as the Deathwing going bone-white with thier TDA was due to something that happened after the Heresy.  So, staying with the bone does make some sense, but it is, as always, your call.

And, I love how those are looking.  I especially like the heavy bolter guy, and if nothing else, keep him in the tac squad and move the missle launcher Marine to a dev squad with flakk missles to give you maximum flexibility with the one weapon.  The gunslinging SGT is just as cool, and I love the pose of bolter to the air, pistol out like he's about to execute some heretic...

They look really good, i'm really liking the bone colour scheme and i'm looking forward to more pictures. If you use a bit more red as a spot colour I think that could turn out nicely but that's just my thought. Some of their poses look really badass too.

The Angels of Absolution are one of my favorite looking successor chapters (behind Consecrators because, I mean duh).

Awesome paint job. Also, awesome work with the transfer sheets. I am terrible with those things to the point I've just resigned myself to free-handing shoulder work. Luckily I've been cultivating the skill and my freehand work looks pretty good so I can feel comfortable with it.

Only thing that seems kind of odd to me is leaving the wings on the biker units the same as the rest of the bike. I feel like it'd be an easy extra little detail and would make them pop a lot more to add some sort of highlight color to them. Think they'd look bad-ass with red wings on that bone white bike? I do. Just an idea!

As for Deathwing, there are fluff reasons Deathwing and Ravenwing have the color schemes they do within the Dark Angels proper. There is no official different schemes for those two units among the other Unforgiven, so feel free to do whatever you want with them.

I know initially Deathwing and Ravenwing both wore black as a throwback to the original Dark Angels, but the Deathwing as a whole changed to Bone after a bunch of them that were all from one recruiting world painted their armor bone white in keeping with a tradition of warriors on that world, marking them as "dead men" as they marched off on a suicide mission.

I'm really stuck for ideas on bases, I did one of the tactical marines with a simple black sand drybrushed grey, but it was kinda boring.

Basing theory suggests I want a dark colour to contrast the light armour, I'm going to experiment with a few different styles, perhaps some kind of red martian sand?

You can still go for the black and grey sand if you add lava to some bases... you don't need lava on every base because we'll look at them squad level so just a few dabs here and there will break up the black and grey for the whole unit.  just an idea.

Thanks to the new codex I've switched my focus to Crimson Fists but have still painted a few Angels recently. I took some of your advice and added a third colour (red) and did some lava bases for the Knights, I think they turned out pretty well by my standards. I have to say Terminators in general are a pleasure to paint and I'm now tempted to do a Deathwing Army. I've got two other Terminator Squads to paint plus a Forge World Legion Praetor who could make a good Belial, so I just might!

I mixed in some legs from the standard terminator box to get some more dynamic poses. I particularly liked this advancing knight, though I'm not sure how he can see where he's going with that hood, watch out for the lava!

This guy is about to smite some heretics!

Another one who certainly can't see where he's going.

The librarian from Dark Vengeance.

This was the first model I magnetised as a test, as you can see I didn't do a good job!

Anyway I'm still painting Angels slowly, but Crimson Fists keep pulling me away, I've got the Dark Vengeance bikes on my desk half done as well as a Scimitar Jetbike based Sammael conversion I want to do.
