Storm Shields

Ok, anyone else notice that apparently Storm Shields don't take the place of a weapon? With the Chapter Master, Captain and Command Squad at least it just says the model may take the Storm Shield, it doesn't replace a weapon.

 

Has this always been this way, or is this a new change? I swear that last Codex you had to replace a weapon with the Shield.

Depends, some entries you needed to swap out weapons, some (like command squads) you could just add.

 

How one is supposed to hold a Storm Shield, a Lightning Claw and a Power Fist, I have no idea...

I think having a storm shield prevents you from getting the bonus for two melee weapons. So even if you strapped one to your chest to hold a pair of lightning claws, you still wouldn't get the extra attack.

This is 100% correct.

 

The way it is worded, you could take a Stormshield and two weapons in some instances, but you will never get a bonus attack for having 2 weapons. So unless you really couldn't make your mind up over which weapon to take with your generic captain/CM, you could take two and take a SS as well. Bit of a waste of points really.

You could also do something like take a powerfist and a combi weapon so you wouldn't be getting a bonus attack anyway so might as well up that invuln a bit.

But you could take a ranged weapon, a melee weapon, and a stormshield.  Since it doesn't replace any weapons.

Your relic blade is two handed though, so surely you won't be able to use your Storm Shield?

Strom shield doesn't care about how many hands you need, it just says no two weapon bonus. Logically no you couldn't hold a storm shield, a relic blade, and the primarch's wrath, but this is 40k.

Storm Shield is specifically stated to be a force-field generator, so you could have it slung across the backpack (makes for a cool looking model too) while holding a bolter and sword.  Or similar.

 

See, even 40K makes sense sometimes!

Rules wise it has absolutely nothing to do with that. Dark Angels Masters used to be able to take a pair of lightning claws, a plasma pistol and a storm shield IIRC, because that's who the rules constructed it. The two-handed rule only precludes the benefit of an additional one handed weapon, it doesn't preclude the use of equipment like the storm shield, or even carrying another weapon.
