Basing Colours For Ravenwing

Warbringer

Recommended Posts

Hey All,

I've decided to come back from the fold (Tau) and focus on another Space Marine army other than my space wolves.

So I've always liked Dark Angels especially Deathwing and Ravenwing and I've decided to take the plunge and build and Ravenwing Force

I've brought the following

Sammael

Battleforce Will make 7 Bikes and look to magnetise 1 of them to take the attack bike.

9 Dark Vengeance Bikers (Will convert them up a little using the Battleforce Bits)

So before I start painting I like to get a plan of what i'm doing and there is one thing i'm struggling to decide on and thats Bases.

So what colours and themes do you all use on your Dark Angels I would love to see examples of your basing themes.

Thanks in advance!!!!!!

Desert for me:  Deneb stone (Rackarth Flesh) washed with Gryphonne Sepia (Sepia whatever shade it is now)  Rock formations are just cork painted red, washed black and drybrushed dwarf flesh.

I still need to put some static grass on it but the colors carry well across black, green and bone...

gallery_13203_846_562801.jpgHere's a shot of the bases that I use for all of my DA. It works well with green, black, and bone (although it might not work as well with fire engine red bolter cases!). It starts with three sizes of gravel glued on, then it's thinned (so that it settles into the texture) hull red (forget the brand of paint) with red gore (out of print, but any darker crimson will work) drybrushed over the top, and then random small mossy clumps of flock over the top of that. A few bases here and there (none in this pic) have twiggy little black plants made from untwisting short bits of braided nylon floss. It's actually less work than it sounds like, especially when you do ten at a time.

I use a fairly coarse sand on my bases. So i paint them with chaos black followed by a light drybrush of uniform grey. The i finish off with red brick pigment powder from secret weapon.

I always go for a basing color that is different from any of the colors of the army (as a whole) itself, as it is more aesthetically pleasing.  For Dark Angels, I recommend staying away from dark gray or black for bases.  Go with medium and lighter shades of brown, gray, and/or (rusted) metallics instead.  You want the colors on the model to stand out from the base, not "die" on it (exception- Scouts' camo cloaks).

The urban/road designs fit well and look cool with the bikes but can be too subtle for some.

A rusty scrapyard look would also fit the bikes well but may not be a great colour choice. The contrast is better though. I'm in the process of basing like this but my bikes are green so...

For black bikes I guess snow/ice would be the best high contrast look but may seem like an odd setting.

For bikes it helps to make the wheels blend with the base. Get lots of dirt in the tracks if its around. Make sure they look clean going over ice. Add a bit of dust and pebbles on urban roads etc...
