Help needed for SW foot slogging army lists - 1k/1.5k/2k

I've got 3 games coming up and need to work out some army lists. The games will be ...

- Game 1 : Mission 1 : Purge the alien : Deployment: Dawn of war : 2K points

- Game 2 : Mission 2 : The emperors will : Deployment: Hammer and Anvil : 1K5 points

- Game 3 : Mission 3 :The relic : Deployment: Vanguard strike : 1K

Not actually played that many games so army list building isn't one of my strong points. I tend to take lots of GH packs with just 2 plasma guns as upgrades, the odd Long Fang pack toting plasma cannons and at least 1 Rune Priest all foot slogging.

I'm not sure if I should carry on as I have been or mix it up a bit. There's a fair number of models already painted thanks to this years ETL and I've got lots more that I can build to fill in any holes the army lists may create in my finished units.

So what would you use and why? I'm looking for foot slogging or minimal tanks as I'll need to transport them on the train and have plenty of troop transport foams but not any suitable for tanks/drop pods. I'm also tied to a single FOC and can't have any allies or fortifications. I also don't have to add to the smaller list so the 2k doesn't have to contain any of the other smaller armies models in it (hopefully that makes sense).

Any help is greatly appreciated as I need to have all 3 armies painted and on the table ready to game in just over a months time.

Edit: I also forgot to mention I hate SW's riding really big wolves, something about them just doesn't quite sit right with me.

Well, as has been stated many times through out here, a general rule of thumb is 1 Troop+ for every 500 pts & roughly 1 Long Fang pack per every 750 pts. No fortifcations or Allies? That could hinder you if your opponent has any flyers. So then, for a 1K list what about 2x10 man GH packs with WGTDA, one 5 man GH pack w/WG, one LF pack & a pack of Swift Claws w/attack bike an a RP for HQ. Play with the pack sizes to make 1K on the nose but that should put you in the ball park. From there to 1.5 K, add another GH pack, LF pack & 2 more WG & take the TDA Hvy. weapon. Maybe add to the Swift Claw pack or make 2 smaller swift claw packs. To go to 2K, add another RP & take  more WGTDA & perhaps a Speeder or 2. Not exactly all footsloggin but a start I hope. My 2 cents.

Flyers will be tougher with those restrictions they have put on you (sounds like shenanigabs to me) but a reasonable full codex solution is the priesence rune priest in a long fang pack full of missiles and maybe even a cml wolf guard. Not ideal but workable.

are you not worried troops being open to fire with no transport.

If this was the IG or Eldar we're talking about then yes, but they're in power armour.  I might change my tune after facing some of those grav-guns but for now I'm happy.

You consider using a Wolf Priest with Saga of the Hunter so one of your GH packs can outflank? With a full size unit of Grey Hunters you could march onto the board and either claim an objective or turn up his gunline. Just food for thought!

Right time to have a bash at some army lists ...

Starting off with Game 1 which is 2,000 points "Purge the alien" scenario and "Dawn of war" deployment.  This will be the closest to what I'm used to playing so the one where I'm more confident in.  I'll just want durable units which can give out as much clout as possible.

I'm thinking of running:

Wolf Priest - Saga of the Hunter, Plasma Pistol ... 125 points

15 Blood Claws - 2 Flamers, 1 Power Fist, Plasma Pistol ... 265 points

Wolf Guard - Power Weapon ... 28 points

Rune Priest - Chooser of the Slain ... 110 points

10 Grey Hunters - 2 Plasma Guns, Wolf Standard ... 170 points

Wolf Guard - Storm Bolter ... 21 points

Rune Priest - Plasma Pistol ... 115 points

10 Grey Hunters - 2 Plasma Guns, Wolf Standard ... 170 points

Wolf Guard - Storm Bolter ... 21 points

10 Grey Hunters - 2 Melta Guns, Wolf Standard, Mark of the Wulfen ... 180 points

Wolf Guard - Storm Bolter, Thunder Hammer ... 46 points

10 Grey Hunters - 2 Flamers, Wolf Standard, Mark of the Wulfen ... 175 points

Wolf Guard - Storm Bolter, Thunder Hammer ... 46 points

6 Long Fangs - 5 Plasma Cannons, Flamer, Power Maul ... 210 points

6 Long Fangs - 5 Missile Launchers ... 140 points

Wolf Guard - TDA, Storm Bolter, Power Weapon, Cyclone Missile Launcher ... 63 points

6 Long Fangs - 5 Heavy Bolters ... 115 points

Total ... 2,000 points

I know the 2x thunder hammer/storm bolter wolf guard are a bit daft but my minds had enough and it can be easily swapped out.  Any thoughts?

Wolf Guard Terminators sitting in the front of a GH pack are your friend. That 2+ armour save will soak up small arms fire, and if you keep them cheap (Combi + Power Weapon), it's no huge loss if they get taken out. You can risk taking SS for 3++ protection, but it's a tad more expensive.

Cheers guys. I'll possibly look at TDA WG if I get enough painted. I'm going to have to paint at a similar speed to the last month of the ETL to get this lot finished in time. I've currently not got ANY Grey Hunters painted up!!!

I've not actually used the Wolf Priest with the Saga of Hunter before so think I'll need to play test it out to make sure I get the mechanics right.

The 2x Thunder Hammers can be removed to free up points for TDA possibly. :)

Good stuff, I forgot about Outflanking with the Wolf Priest, very nasty combo.

Remember you can take Wolf Guard in only a 3-man squad, that's not a lot of Terminators to paint up. Sure you need a 5-man to take Cyclone/AssCan, but heavy weapons aren't really a must-take with them taking point, especially if you're trying to save on points (exception being the Heavy Flamer at a measly 5pts).

Ok here's a bit of a tweaking with much more eggs in one basket ...

Wolf Lord - TDA, Power Fist, Wolf Claw, Saga of Warrior Born/Bear ... 200 points        Not sure which Saga to give him?

Wolf Priest - Saga of the Hunter, Plasma Pistol ... 125 points

15 Blood Claws - 2 Flamers, 1 Power Fist ... 250 points

Wolf Guard - Power Sword ... 28 points

Rune Priest - Chooser of the Slain ... 110 points

10 Grey Hunters - 2 Plasma Guns ... 160 points

10 Grey Hunters - 2 Plasma Guns ... 160 points

10 Grey Hunters - 2 Melta Guns, Wolf Standard, Power Sword, Mark of the Wulfen ... 190 points

Wolf Guard - Power Sword ... 28 points

10 Grey Hunters - 2 Flamers, Wolf Standard, Power Sword, Mark of the Wulfen ... 185 points

Wolf Guard - Power Sword ... 28 points

6 Long Fangs - 5 Plasma Cannons ... 190 points

6 Long Fangs - 5 Missile Launchers ... 140 points

6 Long Fangs - 5 Heavy Bolters ... 115 points

5 Scouts - Sniper Rifles ... 90 points

Total ... 1,999 points

Benefit to this army list is less models needing to be painted up ready.  Not sure who it'll play though.

Is this just going a bit too daft/fragile?

For the 3rd game which will be "The Relic" mission with deployment using "Vanguard Strike" I'm really tempted to try out my WG with jump packs that I painted up for the ETL even though they are stupidly priced points wise.  To Squeeze into a 1,000 points list the rest of the army needs to be stripped back completely.  The other benefit is this will not add any extra models onto the ones I need to paint up for the 2k list.

Rune Priest - Chooser of the Slain ... 110 points

10 Grey Hunters - 2 Plasma Guns ... 160 points

10 Grey Hunters - 2 Plasma Guns ... 160 points

5 Wolf Guard - 5x (jump pack, thunder hammer, storm shield) ... 465 points

5 Sky Claws - Power Sword ... 105 points

Total ... 1,000 points

For the wolf lord saga - id take bear over warrior born everytime. Although warrior born sounds fun on paper, ive very rarely seen it actually pay off. Whereas having eternal warrior means he isnt getting instagibbed by powerfists, melta, lascannons etc.

The wolf priest outflank loadout, i actually think works a lot better with twin plasma grey hunters, as the benefits of preffered enemy greatly reduce plasma risk. The blood claws are an assault unit at heart, and not being able to charge when they first come on via outflank will leave them open to having their numbers cut down.

when i run outflank fun i tend to have something like this:

Wolf priest - SotH, p.pistol

1x Wolf Guard - 2xP.Pistol, Wulfen

10x Grey Hunters - 2xPlasma, Standard, Wulfen

Puts out a potential 7 plasma shots and 16 bolter shots the turn it arrives, with rerolls on 1s. Two wulfen in one squad can also be horrendous/hilarious with good dice.

5 wolf guard in jump packs, all with TH/SS.... oof. Pretty tough if they actually hit, but as you say, just ridiculous points wise, massed small arms fire will take them out no bother at all....as you say, fun, but really not worth it competitively

Hmmm ... Not sure the standard is required as they Wolf Priest gives them preferred enemy.  I'd use the points for a plas pistol in the grey hunters.  So thats 8 plas shots!!!

Tempted by a 2nd unit but minus the wulfen and the hunter saga.  :)
