Emperor's Furor
Mine turned up today, just finished it, kind of disappointed, it should of come out before Vulkan Lives. Another very psychological story by Kyme though. Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/280258-scorched-earth/ Share on other sites

Vile Siren
Are there any spoilers that are worth mentioning or is it just the two sallies wandering around the whole time? SteelPaladin
I never cared for Kyme's writing before, but Vulkan Lives surprised me. It was the first thing I read of his that I actually enjoyed. I would be interested to see if Scorched Earth is of similar quality, or if Vulkan Lives was just a fluke. Emperor's Furor
No spoilers that affect the general theme of the heresy unfortunately, very a much a journey story with a big twist at the end that has no baring on the fate of Vulkan or the overall story. Conn Eremon
Would you mind putting that twist ending in a spoiler tag? Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/280258-scorched-earth/#findComment-3462739 Share on other sites
Emperor's Furor
The Salamander who has been searching for Vulkan with his partner who used to be a Librarian finds out in fact he was the Librarian, his partner the other Salamander turns out to be a figment of his imagination, he's the Salamander he failed to save when his and another drop ship got shot down. It's kind of a Fight Club twist. Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/280258-scorched-earth/#findComment-3462746 Share on other sites

Emperor's Furor
This book should of come out before Vulkan Lives, Vulkan Lives kind of makes the tension in the book redundant as you know what happens to Vulkan. calgar101
Completely agree with you WoT, this book really has nothing to add to the series at all, this could easily have been an anthology or just not written at all. Balthamal
Agree I'm disappointed with it. It's an alright kind of book but certainly not value for a limited edition. Not sure whether it's just me being picky by comparing it to the other LE (namely Aurelian which was superb) but think I'll steer clear of them from now on unless it's actually for a Legion worth reading about. Seems it's just another case of the Broken Legions being all miserable which we seem to get in every other novel these days, pretty boring now. I think it would have been fine as part of an anthology along with Promethean Sun though to be fair Brotherhood of the Storm was pretty good. SteelPaladin
The LE novellas have been fairly hit or miss. Aurelian, Brotherhood of the Storm and The Imperial Truth have all been excellent, while Promethean Sun and Corax: Soulforge have been decidedly meh. Although the black on black printing of Corax was fantastic :) Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/280258-scorched-earth/#findComment-3464310 Share on other sites
Emperor's Furor
I liked Promethean Sun and Soulforge, this one however is by far the worse of all the limited edition novellas. Edit: I made a comment on facebook in the Horus Heresy group about reading this before Vulkan Lives and Nick Kyme responded saying it was nonsense lol Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/280258-scorched-earth/#findComment-3464319 Share on other sites
Balthamal
I wouldn't say it's essential to read it before Vulkan Lives but it's certainly an advantage although being honest in this case I just found the book to be meh so not sure whether it would have benefited from being the prologue to VL Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/280258-scorched-earth/#findComment-3464353 Share on other sites
b1soul
Promethean Sun was utter tosh...Dino-Riders vs. Space Marines. You can't go wrong with passing on Kyme's work (with the sole exception of Fall of Damnos, which was readable IMO) What's scary is that so many HH authours churn out really bad shyte: McNeill, Swallow, Kyme, Counter, Scanlon...just to name a few The only authours on the HH team who can write are Abnett, Wraight, and ADB, the others are pure amateur. In fairness, II must say A Thousand Sons was solid, but it seems to be an exception among McNeill's usually terrible work. GhostMalone
Hmmm I take them as they are. Dino riders have been established on maiden worlds so I let it pass. Vile Siren
Ehh personally I can tolerate McNeil more than the others because he can do some good writing like Perturabo from Angel Exterminatus and I have actually liked how much detail he can go into on some things BUT I completely agree that he can do some bad writing but hey for me his pros can equal out his cons but again this is just my opinion and I know people will disagree. b1soul
I try to hate not on authours, but on bad writing. Fall of Damnos was decent and A Thousand Sons was good. Can't stand anything else by Kyme or McNeill Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/280258-scorched-earth/#findComment-3465162 Share on other sites
