Thunder hammer > axe conversion?

I really love the thunder hammer in the wolf pack kit, but I don't see myself giving thunder hammers to anyone very often, least of all guys in power armour. Axes, on the other hand, are a pretty useful kind of power weapon, and it'd be great to be able to use the cool pose and robust cabling from that thunder hammer to make an axe by swapping the head of the weapon out.

Problem is, from what I can tell without actually hacking anything up, the two-handed axe from the same kit isn't going to fit very well onto the haft of the hammer, because it's too narrow at the point where it attatches to the haft. I can't cut lower down (below the huge bulky power unit making the haft fo fat) and make the swap there, because on the axe there's a damn hand in the way.

Anyway, has anyone done this? Is it doable? Is there a trick I'm missing, is it simpler than it looks? Is it a horrible idea I should abandon immediately?

I figured I'd get feedback before slicing anything, since I'm still on my first pack and I only have two of each weapon so the components are slightly precious.

Hyá brother,

I've done one axe like that, the shaft is just a little thicker then all the axe-shafts I had/have.

So I chopped off only the "front" end of the hammerhead-where the wolfshead meets the head, as in the bulky bit which is supposed to connect to things and destroy them utterly. Then I chose an axeblade I liked, glued it in place, did some minor sandpaper work and was done.

Hope the description helps a little.

I've done a fairly simple conversion using just the axe head, but that was with one of the terminator Thunder hammers, which are more segmented. Here's a picture of the model (Front left Wolf Guard. Not the unprimed guy with the Chaos Warriors axe)

Also, with these particular bits, I would recommend pinning.

If it doesn't fit right, at least with the pin in place, it gives you a tiny bit of support to work some greenstuff magic.

Plus, considering the pieces it would be super fragile without a pin in it.
